Re: 55-57 one piece windows
Wanted to bump this back up as well as say thanks. In my 56 TF, I have one of the original brothers one piece window kits, the felt is worn out and I need to replace it. Question, could I add the front channel for the felt to sit in without doing the mod to the back channel? I do have the universal power windows as well. Again, great job BlackDiesel.

Thanks, now I have to find a set of channels, cuz I sold mine to Tuckers in Las Vegas years ago. Maybe easier to just make them.

Re: 55-57 one piece windows
I'm having issues with the door latch will not fit after i move the rear channel back, anyone with this problem? Any pictures that shows how close the latch fits with the rear chanel?

Re: 55-57 one piece windows
Blackdiesel I just have to say thank you for doing the hard work ahead of time. I almost bought the Brothers one piece kit but luckily found this thread first. I believe I will go the route you guys did and get the template and make it myself. Glad you thought of moving the rear channel back because I saw how some others fit in other folks trucks that they were not happy with. Yours makes sense. I thank you and my 57 chevy thanks you! Now I need to find someone who has done a big back window install......:5150:

Re: 55-57 one piece windows
I have a couple of Brothers one piece glass side windows I can't use because I chopped my top. They come very close to fitting but are just a little too long and bind in the rear channel right at the top where the window has to tip forward. If one of you who is more industrious than I can use these for a good deal price, PM me. I have the original packaging for shipping and the windows are the grey tint that Brothers offers. I'm making a template and having new glass cut and tempered.

Re: 55-57 one piece windows
Hey All,
Great thread and a lot of really good information. My truck already had one-piece door glass installed when I bought it. They do not seem to rattle, so I hope both side channels installed-- I guess time will tell. The window channel weatherstrip and belting strip whiskers are another story-- cheap and poorly installed. In looking for a source for replacement, I came across this site: http://stores.restorationspecialties.com/StoreFront.bok Looks like they have the world of window weatherstrip covered. In the thread, someone specified these part numbers: 2 each Y528-96-WIN, 1 each M123-96-WIN and 1 each MR172X-96-WIN (enough material for both doors). Can someone confirm that these are the correct part numbers for a 1959 3100? Thanks, srengr https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-l...4/IMG_0176.JPG -------------------------------------------- 1959 3100 - Mild Resto-mod, 327 small block, TH350 |

Re: 55-57 one piece windows
I am getting ready to order my glass. I did not see where anyone addressed the thickness. Is the replacement glass you guys are getting the same thickness as original, or thinner? I assume the window channel is available for different thicknesses?
Also in the video you bend the channel around the window after the back (latch side) track is welded in. Is it a correct assumption you can reach both the front and back track thru the large door opening to "mash" them into the channels? I have my doors buried and cannot get to them to do a arm length test! Thanks Patrick |
Re: 55-57 one piece windows
I also have a question about the glass. Do you cut right on the line, inside the line or the outside of the line?
|
Re: 55-57 one piece windows
I got 1/4" tempered glass, $40 a side here. You can reach the channels fine through the big hole but it's hard to reach down low. I used black weatherstrip adhesive to glue the strip into the track. When cutting the template, cut on the line but don't assume it's an exact fit. I highly recommend doing a test fit with masonite before getting the glass cut and take that as a template rather than the paper. To make mine fit right with no gaps I had to tweak the template a bit. I also had to move the front track forward a little farther forward at the bottom than stated to get it to roll up and down right. Also, I only used half of it, and I still have half the piece left over from lengthening the track if anyone needs it.

Thanks for the replies, I am going to use masonite or similar to so I can keep moving forward, just needed to confirm the thickness.

Re: 55-57 one piece windows
I seen a truck in town this morning with the Brothers 1 piece window kit. I talked to the owner and asked how he liked it. He's had the window fall off the track a few times. He closed his door with the window down a few inches and it sounded horrible. He said he thought Brothers might have changed the design and added a new track to the kit.
I called Brother's and was informed that the kit has not been changed. He asked me if my truck was a daily driver or a show truck. I said, "whats the difference?" He said their kit is more suited for a show truck, that doesn't see a lot of window use. I'm sold now on doing it myself. Just a thanks in advance for you guy's who have done the hard work for us. |
Re: 55-57 one piece windows
Ordered the replacement felts for my B robbers trucks kit yesterday from these guys, http://stores.restorationspecialties...Categories.bok, they shipped today, cost is $100 plus with shipping. I made my own track for the front its easy to do.

I just worked on a 27 Dodge Brothers Truck that used felt track and a peg at the bottom of the windows. Brothers kit isn't much better than that with it falling off the tracks when you close the door to hard. |

I'm glad to see this thread is still alive and helping people, That's what hotroding is all about.

Re: 55-57 one piece windows
Okay, replacing the window felts and adding the front channel guide.:
If you are adding the front channel, fit it, take it out, put in the window, because if its in you cannot rotate the window when installing it. Next add your new front channel and leave it a little loose so it can move as your proceed. Then add your adhesive to the outside edge of the top existing channel and install the felts with the window down. Raise the window and thru the access hole reach in and press the felts into the existing rear channel and new front channel, if you want to add your adhesive to these do so now, its a tight fit. I chose to use a piece of duct tape, from the back of the channel on the bottom and wrapped around the sides then into the felt channels. Finally, after the adhesive sets up you can go back and adjust the window gaps and tighten up everything. How do I know this? Four hours and two attempts I now have the drivers side done. Will try the pass side tomorrow, hope it goes smoother. |

Thanks, this is going to save me some time....

I made my front channel, used this stuff to glue in, but really think spray contact on both pieces would work just as well. I removed the chrome strip off the felts, it comes loose over time anyhow.

Re: 55-57 one piece windows
Photos help too. Did you trim the screw in the top photo, it looks like it would push the channel out?
|
Re: 55-57 one piece windows
its an optical delusion, backed it out when installing felt, then screwed it back into felt backing does not come thru. I was going to tack weld it before I did the install, glad I did not.

Felts are in, hope I never have to do that again.

Re: 55-57 one piece windows
How did the horizontal "cat whiskers" install? Did you find ones that fit with the upkick at the ends or did you have to get 4 and fabricate? If I remember right the stock ones are square at the vent end and kick up at the jamb end.

Re: 55-57 one piece windows
Those are the old ones from the brothers kit, they have a button on the back to match the og holes, never stayed in place. I used the adhesive to glue them in. If you do this use lots of masking tape. I tried the rubber gloves, could not feel anything and stuck to everything. It wears off in a couple of days. You can get a new strip of it, not sure if it has the buttons. http://stores.restorationspecialties.com/Categories.bok look for ym54r
