Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Atommik, no problem.
Kabwe, Thank you. Have not seen you on for a little while. Since you are a 55 guy I wondered what you thought of the eye brows on the fenders? Have you done much on your truck? Shannon |

Hey Shannon, just wondering how things were going with the hood, any updates, love looking at your work.....Jim

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
oldman3, I have the hood mostly done. It will be finished on Sunday. I have not been on to much due to us being swamped at work. The center was all cut out and the new was put in. It warped out a little so I had some work straightening it out. I have to take out the inner front panel because I can clean back behind it and the drivers corner was hit alittle, so it needs some work. I am stripping all the paint off of it so I can fix some small dents. Then I will be moving onto the next couple things I have to do yet and then send it home. And soon back onto the panel.

Well, today was a 10 hour day. I got a lot done. Started out fixing the drivers door. Once I shaved the drip rails off I noticed that the top of the door sat in farther than the passengers door. I noticed it on my panel truck too and I checked my 54 cab that I have and it was like that too. So I slit the back side and pulled it out where I wanted it and put a screw driver it the slit to keep it there so I could tack it. Then welded it up and now it fits right. Then I had to finish the gaps on the doors, and now they are done. Then I welded the fire wall in, I only had it tacked in before. Then finished the underside of the passenger headlight brow and they are now finished. Next was the hood. The center is all done and smoothed out and I cut out the front emblem holes and made panel for them. I drilled out the clutch head bolts under the hood to fix the corner of the hood. I figured I would never get them out. After I drilled them out I welded nuts to the underside of the panel so it bolts up like it did. I still have to fix the front edge because it is dented up. I found some filler in the hood so I will hammer and dolly it so it will not need to much. Here are some pictures.

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Looking great Shannon! What are you using to make your fillers, 18 gauge 1018 sheetmetal? Since you're planishing the hood pieces, are you MIG or TIG welding it in?

great job !

Shannon, excellent work as always, everything looks great.....Jim

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Sweet job on the metal. That is a unigue firewall. I assume you made it yourself. You could probably market that design.

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Wow, over 500 posts. I just saw that!
BlueJeep, Thank you. Yes, I am using 1018 sheet metal. I am using MIG. I have a TIG but need to get some smaller tungsten for doing sheet metal. Just have not had time to mess with the TIG on sheet metal too. I would have loved to go to one of those sheet metal workshops you went to. I love doing sheet metal. Daze57, Thank you. oldman3, Thank you. It would have been a lot easier to just fill that step in the hood! At least the filler would have not warped the hood! I got most of it out just a little work on it yet, like the front edge. av8tr33337,Thank you. I must confess it was not my idea. Ironworks and Nsane were the ones that I saw do it, I just made the one for this truck. Shannon |

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
BlueJeep, I would like to try that steel but like you said it is hard to find. I would like to see the difference working it. I will have to try that tungsten. Was he using a inverter machine or a transformer machine? I was told to use a smaller tungsten like 1/16 for sheet metal. I too do not like to spend all to time when I know I can do it quick with MIG. But I know it works better than the MIG when metal working something that was TIG welded.

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
He was using a water cooled transformer machine, looked to be fairly old.
I stand corrected on the difficulty in finding 1008. Just got back from the local steel warehouse and they had 1008 20ga. in stock, $26/sheet. I didn't ask if they had 19ga. (what Ron said he uses) because I mainly bought it to start playing with my bead roller. Sorry for hi-jacking your thread. ;) |

Today I started on the dash. My buddy bought the Dakota Digital VHX series gauges on Ebay for $400 and also bought the 55-59 chevy truck bezel too. So I first cut out the old part of the dash. Then made a piece to fill it all in. Next I got the gauges in to the position of where I wanted them. Then cut it in. Then made a piece for the top screws to go in and the bent a piece of 3/8 fuel line and tacked it on. Next was to dome the top. I made it in 3 pieces so it was not a pain to figure out. I tacked it all together. Then call my buddy to see if he liked it. He did, so tomorrow after work I will weld it all together. He might pick it up by the end of the week so the panel is getting closer.

Shannon, looks great, nice job. What's his thoughts on the rest of the dash?....Jim

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Jim, Thank you. I am also getting rid of the radio delete and smoothing that out. It will keep the factory glove box and speaker grill. I will be turning the ash tray into a false door for his Ipod hook up (that will be his radio). Sometime it will get a lower dash panel extension made for the heat/AC ducts.

Atommik, youngrodder, Thank you
I got it welded up tonight and only have to make 2 small filler pieces for the sides and the filler piece where the old column came through the dash. I also filled the radio holes. It is coming along really nice and is soon going home. My buddy can not wait to work on it. Shannon |
Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
That's some nice finish work. Everyone is going to notice that dash being different than stock....Jim

oldman3, Thank you. It will be different but I think it fits well.
48 GMC BURB, Thank you. I would love to come to OC but we are so busy at work and I will be trying to get everything done to get the panel at least driveable for the Nat East. The truck is leaving tonight and I will be back on the panel by the weekend. We will have to met up though. You are coming to the Nats aren't you? I can not wait to see your build. What happened to the 9 inch? I knew you blew it on the way to the Goodguys show. Shannon |

Well the 48 left tonight and it went back to its home. He is building the bed and I will get it back when the bed and fenders are on. Then I will build the running boards, tranny tunnel and one of those front tilting hoods. Now back on to my panel truck.

72ArizonaBurb, Sent it back to my buddy who owns it. So it may be a while till I do the other things to it that I have to do. He is working on it now. I am back to working on my panel now.

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Shannon, I had to re-read your first few pages in this thread today. I fired up my bead roller and tried practicing some "raised panels" with a step die today and I don't have it figured out yet. I can do a straight line pretty well, but get messed up with the curved corners. What advice can you offer to a bead rolling newbie? Yours are the benchmark I'm using for comparison! Thanks!
|
Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
BlueJeep, Thank you. I built my bead roller so It has I think around a 2 5/8 dia dies, so it does not make really tight corners. I use a small coffee can to draw in the corners. I jog the control on the corners but the bead roller only goes about about 22 inches a minute. One other thing is make sure that when you do your corners that it does not cut the sheet metal. If you do too tight of a corner it will. I made a set of 3/16 dies and I need more clearance in the step area because it cut instead. Hope that helps.

Well I got he 48 truck back this weekend. My buddy built his bed while I worked on my panel. So now I am going to build the running boards, splash aprons and the roll pan for now. I will do the tranny tunnel and maybe a roll up back window among a bunch of little things. I started on the running boards tonight and have the lower part bent. They will fit the fenders on both ends and will be smooth. Next is fitting them and making the ends, and then the upright pieces. It will really look good with them and the splash aprons on.
