Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thanks Bubba1955, that notch is clear to me, I know that I have to do those. I will weld the IFS in.
But after measuring the framerails and the width of the front end sheetmetal, I think I know what OneOffStroker was talking about. I have to grind a little bit out of the sheetmetal at the "underside" of the IFS, where the metal hits the frame. No big deal, just measure a few times and then grind ;) I now have the engine out and took off the steering, e-brake and shockmountsbrackets. So now we have place for an IFS :metal: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--...o/P1250912.JPG This piece of metal has to go under the framerails... https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-L...o/P1250913.JPG If you look closely you see what must be modified on the IFS to mount it properly https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-U...o/P1250914.JPG Brackets off, steering gone... https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-z...o/P1250919.JPG |

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Kees - Here is a thread of what and where I notched for the Jag to fit into my frame. About halfway down, he has pictures of the little notch he made to fit it into a 34" frame. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/t...o-f100.571296/
Here is mine, all welded in. I think I am going to add a few more filler pieces and do some more welding now that I have the frame up in the air. http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/...r/IMGP6836.jpg http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/...r/IMGP6837.jpg I hope this info helps. I think it is a better way to go than removing the crossmember and squeezing the frame to make the Jag fit. If you did that, then you would have problems with the radiator support mounts and bumper mounts. It would be hard to get your front sheetmetal aligned if you did that. |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thanks OneOff,
Thanks for your pics! The thread about the F100 was known by me ;) I allready saw where to notch the IFS, at the bottom where the IFS meets the framerails. I do not squeeze the frame, but I will notch it. One thing: did you dissamble the upper A-arms before putting the axle under the frame? Or did you slide it over from the front to where it supposed to be?? |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Kees,
I did take the upper arms off and brought the crossmember straight up. This is why I had to take the springs out the first time. That was also the worst experience ever, because I did not have the proper tools to do it, as I mentioned earlier. I would think that sliding it from the front would create its own problems, especially since we know that the frame needs to be notched for a-arm clearance, I would think it will get stuck several times before it gets to where it needs to be. |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Okay, thanks!
I thought so...maybe better, can put some paint at it at once ;) I also made my own tool to put the control arms together, now I have to take them apart again  At least I know how that works  I gonna try this first thing in the morning, tomorrow, and see if it's working the way I want it. Hope to get the IFS in his place by the end of the day, so I can start welding. |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
I did reach my goal yesterday, I managed to get the IFS where I wanted it.
First I took the controlarms off and grinded little notches in the lower corners to clear the framerails. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-0...o/P1250920.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-k...o/P1250923.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-1...o/P1250924.JPG Then I test fitted the IFS, it fits the framerails real good, but the stock X-member is in the way to get it at its place... https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-P...o/P1250922.JPG I tacked in a temporary x-member and got the X-member out https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-p...o/P1250925.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-X...o/P1250926.JPG With the IFS 3/4" further to the front, I'm now happy with the way the wheel sits in the fender https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8...o/P1250927.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-T...o/P1250928.JPG The upper controlarm mount also clears the framerails https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-D...o/P1250929.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-d...o/P1250932.JPG It's now 10 o clock in the morning overhere, I hope I get it completely welded in today, so I'm off now! |

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
After a few hours of grinding and welding, the IFS has a new home :metal:
I first made all the gussets that I needed and tacked them in after I tacked the front axle in its place. This the outside front gusset: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-D...o/P1250933.JPG The outside back gusset: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-u...o/P1250934.JPG There also are metal gussets at the inside, from framerails to the axle sheetmetal, unfortunately didn't took pics of these... But if you look good enough, you see them. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-o...o/P1250935.JPG I welded all the pieces together as I think it should ;) https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-m...o/P1250936.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--...o/P1250937.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-P...o/P1250938.JPG Next on the list is some boxing of the framerails, I've got two plates 18 inch long and 1/4 inch thick. I think that should do the job. Remember, it will not be a dragracer, but more of a dailydriver...:chevy: I don't know my route yet, will put the rack & pinion and front wheel on, so I can roll a bit. I think I'm going to make the IRS first and then the enginemounts. I then know where the engine is going to be. Well, we'll see ;) |

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thanks guys!!
A bit further with the front end. I took the lip out of the steeringbox and made it flat, I like it much better this way... This is how I did it: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-G...o/P1250939.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-n...o/P1250940.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_...o/P1250941.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-R...o/P1250942.JPG Next I made some plates to get some strenght at the front end above the IFS https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0...o/P1250943.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Q...o/P1250944.JPG The plates are straight and the framerails are "bent". First I was thinking to fill the gap between the plates and the framerails with some metal strips, but I managed to get the plates bent towards the frame with some C-clamps. I like this better. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-S...o/P1250945.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-h...o/P1250946.JPG The plates are now tacked in, run out of time, so finish welding have to wait.... All is going pretty well, if I may say so ;) |

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Today I mounted the wheels and rack and pinion. I had to move the truck a bit to get to work at the backside.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-E...o/P1250952.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-k...o/P1250953.JPG Have a few things to do thou, have to make shockmounts, mount the anti rollbar, brackets for brakelines and such.. So far, so good!! I took the plastic bedliner out and was surprised to see that the box was in that good shape! Sure I need new bedwood, but the box itself is in good shape!! Too bad the PO had everything mounted with screws, so I have a lot spots to weld, the same as inside the cab. Well, it keeps a man buzzy :uhmk: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-O...o/P1250958.JPG I want the box off so I can work at the IRS, when that's done its on to the cab. But...that will be a while before it's that far ;) |

Damn! Kees, I just read through the entire thread in one go. Amazing build, keep up the good work!. I'll be following this thread for sure because as we say in dutch: je bent een handige donder. No idear how that translates into english hahaha
I'm down in Hoofddorp, so I'll be sure to visit one day and see it with my own eyes :) |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Nice work Kees. Moving right along!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thanks guys!!
Jim, the front is not even ready yet :lol: But yes, I started on the back half today.... Steve-W, you're always welcome! So, on with todays pics: I have, as I told before, a XJ12 IRS, with this ugly cage... Boy this thing is heavy! https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-e...o/P1250963.JPG Cage has to go, it's a must!! https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-H...o/P1250966.JPG That's better ;) Also tried to take the bed apart, some bolts came out, and some broke or didn't come out at all. We took the whole bed off and deal with that later. Now I can see how much space I have to get the IRS in. I think it's not so difficult, time will tell.... Before the bed came off, I finally found my change from Good Ol' US of A :lol: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-O...o/P1250964.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-A...o/P1250967.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-G...o/P1250968.JPG To be continued..... |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Yes, full throttle overhere!!! And I'm curious too how the IRS will fit the frame... Boy, am I glad to have your tools in my shop :metal: Have to do it all alone, and some parts are a bit too heavy for me :sumo: I come visit you in a short while, have to go to that great Dutch Harbor Freight shop ;) |
