Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Those lines look really good. Isn't that the way things go...something needed for a project is close by and something else gets in the way...
|
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Those lines look great! Of course the proportioning valve is going leak badly with that last port still open.. ;)

Also does anyone know where to order the prop valve bracket? |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Took the hubs off my dana 60 after finally getting the right spindle nut socket.
Progress is slow at the moment. I think I might spend some time detailing the engine bay, etc while I save funds for the next steps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-yTvQLBJ5I |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Nice job on the video! Anyone needing to do this job could follow along easily. And they will know what socket will work....
I've never worked on anything with a wedge under the caliper. Interesting. |

Yea the 1 ton axle had me stumped pretty good, trust me there was a lot of edits of NOT knowing what I was doing haha. My job is making content basically (I run a website/online store for training information) so I feel it makes sense to do it with my hobby as well and have found Youtube tutorials to work great... The only way you get better at something is by doing it I've found so I'll keep making some as I get further into this project. |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Do you have any pics you can post of the brackets for the buddy buckets center section to keep it upright not fall in back seat.
I have gold and white Buddys and would love to put them in my 68 4X4 burb... Thanks in advance! |

I actually need to make a bracket like you do as well. If you find more info please share Progress on my burb has been put to a halt, shorter days, more work, more bills.. You all know how it goes I'll get back on it though |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Wire wheeled and rattle canned the Dana 60 and some parts
https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0...6b&oe=57E84FC3 I might try to get a dana 44 3:73 front end with 6 lugs for the time being just to get the suburban on the road and save the Dana 60 and going 1 ton for a later date. At this point I just want to drive it |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Upate:
Picked up a Dana 44 with 3:73s to match the back axle for $100 https://scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net...fc&oe=580D7743 Sold my Dually Dana 60 for 1k Picked up some 4x4 Rally's with good 32" BFG's for $200 its been productive week! https://scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net...21&oe=57EE4CD0 https://scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net...66&oe=57F9FA6E Now to clean, paint, put new brakes, Ubolts, etc on the axle and bolt it up. |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
A video moving the new Dana 44 the hard way from the other day... Worked out pretty good actually

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Watching this makes me feel more fat & outta shape
Axles are tough to move around by oneself, since they have spinning grab points. What's up with the hubs? No selectors? |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Quote:
Yea moving stuff like this its all about finding the right balance and leverage points. The axle didn't come with locking hubs but for $100 I can't complain |

Got the Dana 44 in, brakes, steering, etc hooked up and the rally's mounted. Trying to get it towed to my new house now.
https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/l/t1...24&oe=58139A1C I'll get some more pictures up soon and will give it a good WASH when it gets to its new home! |

Looking for a set of gold mirrors/arms for both sides I know this will be a hard find but I'd like to find an original set so it matches the patina of my burb.
Will take individual arms as well |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Gave it a good bath today to up the property value
My wife gave her 69 Pontiac a real detailing while I was washing the Suburban. Was pretty cool to spend the afternoon together working on the cars. I ordered all new brakes, shocks and springs for the Pontiac. Its taking precedence over the Suburban right now since its so nice and its a shame I can't drive it everyday. https://scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net...39&oe=585BB1A7 https://scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net...a9&oe=585D9662 https://scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net...8d&oe=585F00B1 |

Did you actually have trouble finding mirrors? They should work fine. There is a backing plate that goes inside the door with nuts welded to it, for bolting them in place. I hope you got those too..... LockDoc |

Mirror arms that are original and still gold to somewhat match my original paint. I got the backing plates as well. |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Mirror installed
Putting the backing plate and mirror on by yourself is tricky until you get some duct tape. Was not happy with the "original" color of the arms I got so I painted them with the closest match I could find. Which is good enough for now https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0...2c&oe=59B1823E https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0...1a&oe=59ACE987 |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Took the engine accessories off to give it some detailing
I will get some more photos and a write up soon. https://scontent-sjc3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...42&oe=5AE63960 I listed the Burb for sale just because I am so busy I don't feel like I have the time but all the potential buyers seem to fall out so thankfully it looks like I will be keeping it and doing what I can little by little. |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Had it for sale but don't think I am ready yet.
Plugging away doing a little bit here and there when I can. New points, plugs, wires, etc in. I used AC Delco 508N Plug wires to keep them under manifold and they fit great without cutting. There was 1 set "used" on amazon for $9 shipped so I scored on that as they were brand new when they arrived. Looked like a returned item to me. http://amzn.to/2EPgdod https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DWWMyOPU0AEggqd.jpg https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DWWMyPVVQAAKXGN.jpg My son is due on April 9th. My Suburban was sold April 12th 1968 so a decent chance they end up sharing a birthday just 50 years apart. |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Got to chat Suburbans with member here Jordan and he brought me this rear A/C unit that is pretty complete.
Looks like it will be fun to figure that one out someday https://scontent-sjc3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...4e&oe=5B190E5F |

Slow progress but progress Power Steering in https://scontent-sjc3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...e7&oe=5B4855C2 Who designed this bolt? I was able to get it done with a stubby wrench flipped up as shown and didn't have to jack the motor up thankfully. |

A little here, a little there, pretty soon it will be done. That's the way I do things sometimes. Lookin' better all the time. That bolt is the single worst bolt on the build for me. LockDoc |

Rainy out but got a cool shot of it sitting in the driveway. |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Got a little more work done today, Power steering lines, adjustment, alternator bracket, etc... More it was just a really nice sunny day after a few days of rain and it was nice to be outside wrenching.
https://scontent-sjc3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...f0&oe=5B2ED770 Bad news is I think I have a small leak in the radiator so I pulled it to inspect / repair while everything is out. I also picked up 1 6 lug slot mag for $20 that was down the street from me and I love how it will look! (mocked up) https://scontent-sjc3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...0a&oe=5B7384D5 I might try to go get a set of four this weekend if I can make the drive... I figure this can be used as a full-size spare off the back gate eventually. |

Been getting little things done here and there.
Freshened up the brakes, new master cylinder just need to bleed them now. It's getting close! Good news is the little guy likes to hang out already while I work on it. https://scontent-sjc3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...25&oe=5BE7FF90 |
