Cool parts. I just recently installed the CVF serpentine setup on my 468 going in Walter...good fit , finish and phenomenal tech support! I liked them so much, I bought a set at SEMA and am in the process of putting them on my sbc in my ‘77 SWB “Vern” (still gotta finish that install up, but they fit like a glove too).

Well it doesn’t feel like much progress but I got the heads, lifters, push rods, roller rockers, and balancer installed and valves adjusted. Having trouble with an intake bolt (previous thread repair). It’s finally looking like an engine.

Oops. I did not catch the different attachment design when I ordered my valve covers. I had been planning on keeping the plug wires nice and tidy above the headers with something like the second picture below. But I'm not sure if that will work now. Has anyone found a solution to this? If not I suppose I'll have to run the wires beneath the headers.

One of the guy on this chevelle board looks to have the same valve covers as you. He took the Moroso big block looms and turned them upside down to still fit against the valve cover. https://www.chevelles.com/forums/13-.../topics/278166

No problem. It had a few different ideas in that. And they said the length of wires wasn’t a problem with that setup as well.

I got the engine in the truck finally. It's a little tricky with a truck this low when the hoist won't go under the a-arms. :uhmk:
The driver side valve cover is making contact with the firewall (glad I put a rag between there during install). I'm hoping I can loosen the engine stands and trans crossmember and move it forward slightly to clear. If that doesn't work, does anyone have any other ideas? Maybe the valve cover will actually move forward slightly on the head now that I think about it. Attachment 1844455 Attachment 1844456 Attachment 1844457 |
Re: project "C10 Fever" (68 factory black 396 swb)
Many people that put the big block transplant in thevsoitba small block have that same problem with the drivers valve cover. Many I seen gently massage the firewall with a hammer to make room for the cover. Because the other problem is you can’t get the cover off to make adjustments to the valves after it’s in either. I had to hammer the firewall back when I did the hei distributor change from the stock small cap points dizzy. Otherwise you’d have to move forward the engine mounts and redrill the holes for the crossmembers. Otherwise you’d need a custom engine mounts and still redrill the trans crossmember to move the engine forward. The problem will be then how much room you have in front of the radiator and what cooling fans you use.

So it looks like the driver side cover needs to move forward at least 3/8” to clear (see pic 2 mating surface vc is loose and sitting forward). The passenger side is slightly clear 1/8” or so. The HEI has plenty of room. So I’m going to try a new set of valve covers. These ones are 3-3/4” tall, and there are some I like that are 3-1/2” tall and have the correct wire loom attachment. I figure if the new ones still hit the firewall I may widen out some of the frame mount holes.
Attachment 1846008 Attachment 1846009 Here is what I’m looking at: https://www.holley.com/products/acce.../parts/241-280 The mating flange looks like it should give me plenty of clearance. Attachment 1846017 Attachment 1846018 |

Wow, I gotta get over to the build thread side of the house more often... missed all your progress Tim. It looks great. Really REALLY glad you went with the fawn interior, I think it looks perfect. Sharp truck. I may have missed it, but you mentioned earlier you were on the fence for white top or not white top.. Made up your mind yet?

So while I was under the truck today and noticed my driveshaft yoke hanging out there. It’s over 2-inches out. Yikes! I was driving it like this when I bought it, no weird shakes though. I can’t chance it with the big block. I did some measuring, and it looks like the TH400 I figured I could rebuild later is about 1-3/8” longer (29” vs 27-5/8”, both short shafts). So the engine will come back out. I’ll be better off rebuilding the TH400 now anyway, just another delay. The driveshaft should be just about right but if not that’s an easy cut down or I have a big 3-1/2” driveshaft from a 78 c30 that I can cut down to length.

Re: project "C10 Fever" (68 factory black 396 swb)
Valve covers look good. Driveshaft should be close once you get the 400 in.

I’ve been saving all the hard to find pieces so one day I can do a factory restoration on this truck like you are doing with yours. I don’t have the time for it in my current phase of life but some day!

The interior still needs some attention as it's mostly un-restored OEM parts. Need to fix the radio hole that someone apparently cut with a spoon, refurb and dye all the fawn vinyl items so they are the same color, and a few other minor things. The door panels and windows are out for new door and glass seals. Here are a few current pictures.

What would you do with the interior if it was yours? Just an idea at this point, but I’m thinking about swapping to a factory correct cloth/vinyl fawn bench seat (like you have been looking into), and dye the other vinyl pieces to match better. Maybe even pull the OE floor mat and go with a gray carpet. |

To give a quick answer to your question, I would definitely carpet, and even if not 'factory correct' look into doing the Fawn fabric insert on the Buddy Seats. If that's not viable, then for sure, the Fawn cloth/vinyl bench. Now, on the carpet (and dash pad for that matter) I would love to find them in "Fawn", but I'm not sure it's out there. I did find a dash pad that is listed as "Fawn", but it appears to look a beige color, not even close to the silver that Fawn more closely resembles. On the carpet, I just requested 5 color samples trying to find whatever I can that is closest to Fawn. I will post them in the other thread ( http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=797183 ) Just to tie threads together for others ; ) You mentioned "gray" carpet? Do you have a link or photo of the color? (and what color is Joe's carpet?, that looks darn nice ; ) Thanks, Kevin |

I haven't looked into carpet colors yet. I'm guessing it's a matter of getting samples of "gray" variations. |

Here are a few updates on a few details from the past few months...
I bent a stainless hard fuel line to match the contour of the head/valve cover flange. I've only done this a couple times, it's pretty easy to get it close, but extremely difficult to get it perfect. Attachment 1964571 I experimented with -6AN fittings and stainless braided hose for the fuel line and PCV hose. I'm pretty happy with how it came out. Attachment 1964570 Final fuel hose routing...
