Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado

drove about 150km yesterday and took some readings.

90-100 kph: mid to high 17's
50 in kph: ~18
idle: ~15
accelerating light throttle: ~17
accelerating medium throttle: mid 16's
WOT: high 14's

what I do notice is when I accelerate and the rpms increase, the mixtures also increases. Which I think is good?

I actually think I am all in the ballpark with my readings...I have found some realy interesting topics on the RASO alternative fuel forum.

I just have a rich idle at 14.5-15.0...

You mentioned at idle you are 14.5-15.0 and rich. With an A/F meter, 14.7 -18 is lean, 12-14.7 is the rich side. Make sure you are not detonating, you can do this by pulling your spark plugs and reading the markings. (google reading spark plugs) Look for something that looks like pepper flakes on the plug insulator, this is signs of detonation. I'd hate to hear that you burnt a piston, way over there in the Netherlands.

Also, you mentioned your vacuum readings. those numbers are perfect, it tells me you have a healthy motor.

Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado - "Silvester"

did some more stuff on the Burb.

using the MTX-L for measuring AFR's I have found several "problems" and solved them:

1. vaporizer of my propane system had a small vacuum leak in the low pressure part. repaired it and car now start very easy in the morning.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-I...rizer_leak.jpg

2. PCV was old and needed to be replaced. I have replaced it and the idle is now smoother and mixture is richer (because the PCV was causing a vacuum leak at idle and cruise).

3. My WOT mixture wasnt getting richer then 16, while this should be 13-14.5. I opened up the mixer and found I had previously closed the MAX POWER setting 50%...duhhh....
see small hole in the middle is what lets the propane through:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7...0/DSC00334.JPG

and now fully opened up
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-n...0/DSC00340.JPG

after opening her up my WOT mixture goes to 14.5...which is fine....but I could try to make her a little richer...but car already feels more powerfull when flooring her...yeahhhhh....hahahaha more powerrrr....

bought some parts from a Suburban that was parting out at a local shop I visit a lot:
- intake duct
- intake water protection connection part whatever that is called
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Q...protection.JPG

- radiator top panel support for 454 radiator (I once bought a CU730 Heavy Duty radiator by mistake, great cooling, but doesnt fit my standard 350 panel)
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-W..._panel_454.jpg

- Bumper guards (Gave the Burb some teeth! hehehe)

cool!

the highbeams are in my projectors. They are bi-xenon projectors.

I just took some old sealed beams and painted them flat black to match the other flat black parts on the front.

You got any pictures of your projectors and build?

I actually scored a great deal on amazon.com. The lights are H4 12v 55w P43t bulbs. the headlight housing looks like a normal 4x6 halogen. These lights act as highbeam and lowbeam. Here is a link if you want to see them Chrome Projector Headlights 4X6" & LED... Chrome Projector Headlights 4X6" & LED.... This is the best picture I have for right now. (also came with these nice LEDs I instaled where the highbeams would be). I can post more if your interested.

Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado - "Silvester"

he Mcjames,

no thanks. Blueburb from this forum already tried your type of headlights and was very dissapointed with the output.

If you bought them for looks, then your fine. They look nice.

But if you bought them for the output, then you will probably be dissapointed. These headlights are regular H4 Halogen headlights, that still use the light from a H4 bulb that is being reflected against the back reflector for output. The lens in front is just blocking this output and only making it worse.

I did something totally different. I really hated the output of these small houses and first bought some-bi-xenon bulbs:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-j...s_bi-xenon.JPG

on this picture you can see these xenon bulbs dont match the H4 bulbs. That is one of the reasons why glare occures when you use them.

here is a picture of the output of my Autopal headligts using Halogen versus xenon bulb:
pretty clear: xenon rights and halogen left: see the glare in the xenon part
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-q...n_vs_Xenon.jpg

the light on the road is pretty good, but I got flashed constantly by other drivers.

that is when I decided to retrofit real xenon (H.I.D.) projectors into my housings:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-p...0/IMAG0151.jpg
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-P...0/IMAG0146.jpg

very clear output and good cutoff with no glare above the output

thats makes sense.. how did you go about cutting, molding and fitting?? was it a cheap job? did you modify the plugs? i like the look of your whole retrofit you made. and thanks for the info.. thats probably why they were so cheap..

well I choose to go with headlights with metal housing, because when you start cutting a metal housing holds up better. Plastic houses are easier to cut, you can use a Dremel, but will also crack quicker and are less strong and durable.

I took the glass of by putting them in a oven and heating it up, so the glue gets soft and use a screwdriver to open them up.

I used one of these to cut open th back:
http://www.toolsxl.nl/images/Merken/...22-230_LVI.jpg

I used JB Weld to glue the whole thing together. and used some plastig I had laying around to make the spacer to set the projector a little furhter backwards.

whole cost me about $150,-
bi-xenon projectors
wiring harnass
bulbs 5000k
shipping to netherlands

I already had the ballasts, they will cost yoy anywhere from $15,- a piece, one per headlight, to over $100,- for the real high quality ones.

check out this webstore. That where I got my parts:

great guys and super forum that is very active

In regards to the clip on your heater door question. I just did my heater core and came across the same problem. I made a little "L" shaped bracket.i attached it to the side of the plastic bit and the door with industrial strength epoxy. You could screw or rivet to the door as well. Works like a charm! Drill a hole and place the bracket on the head side of the pin.

I home made them myself, because I didnt like the LMC versions and the Dakota Digital version ROCK, but cost $250,-

I have had a lot of requests and I am looking into maybe making a small batch, but first want to see how these hold up...

I would have to design a circuitboard and have those printed in a small batch. That would save me a lot of time.

Well if you choose to do that put me in line!!! I would love a pair and would be willing to pay. Like you i think the dakota digital ones are a bit overpriced. Or if you choose to do a how to writeup or video that would be awesome. Thanks, Mike.

yes I got it with the headliner and still had my own. I also bought two aluminium strips for extra support. The are 2m long and 30mm wide and 2mm thick. I will add pictures later when I have added them. These ceilings are big in the Suburbans and these old headliners needs extra suport.

big update.

had the underside of the car treated with Fluid Film three years ago, but the guy did a horrible job. I just redid the wells myself.

look at the rust.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-6...920_121137.jpg

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Z...920_121159.jpg

covered the wheel:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-w...920_121215.jpg

final result :
2 coats of ACTION stop rust (dutch product)
1 thick coat of Rustoleum (Combi Color is the Dutch version)
1 thick coat of Brantho Korrux

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-b...921_122421.jpg

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-c...921_122432.jpg

also painted the core support with some paint I had left over from the wheel wells.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-X...921_122259.jpg
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-g...921_122306.jpg

then I wanted to swap the weatherstrips of the cargodoors, but saw the rear cargo floor was all wet
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Q...922_133802.jpg

so stripped it all out
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-T...922_150552.jpg

bubbles?

bubbles everywhere? is this rust?

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-R...922_150628.jpg

so sanded it and checked what was undeneath

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-L...928_164900.jpg

painted the side of the doors and put the new weatherstrips on.

car started wors and wors recently and seemed like either bad batterys of alternator.

had the batteries checked and they both were bad. took two out and placed only one back. I dont need the accesoiry battery since I dont haul trailers. had to do some rewiring.

but still had a bad loading voltage. did some readin and research and seemed like my field connection wasnt connected. The qire was on the alt, but stopped behind the dash.

I remebered I had insulated a hard brown wire under the dash three years ago, because I didnt know what it was for. seems this is the resistance wire for the alternator. reconnected it and the charge voltage is back to allmost 14V now.

was a mess in the front of the car during my search for the charge problem, hahaha
