Befor and after photos of the same motor. 292 inline 6. sooooo I put the carb and headers on because I couldn't wait. but layed some color on the engine Tonight. Everything fit together perfectly. Chose Detroit diesel alpine green. Always loved the Detroit motors and how they look. So made mine look like it. Plus chevy orange is what everyone does. I like different. on the flip side, the 4 speed and my steering knuckles are chevy orange anyway:metal::metal:

Re: 1965 C20 fleet side longbed DD low budget build.

Well found an air cleaner for the Carb. Thinking of changing it to an oval one. goes With The Long motor Look. But just to keep things updated. I bought a can of alpine green to finish the engine... that's about all... hoping to get it tied together a bit more this weekenD. Have one solid day to work on her maybe Saturday my goal is may 9th for the annual all American car day show in my town.

Shot some color on the oil pan. And found a small hole in the bottom of it. The motor didn't leak at all when I looked at it. Turned out there was 1/2 inch of sludge in the botto.. some spots where so thick it was the consistency of Hard clay. sheesh but welded it right up and it's good as new.. and also made another attempt at tackling the brakes again. Been having a hard time with them due to the fact of stripped Bolts. Lost parts. Springs that cannot be found at any parts store. :banghead: lord give me patience haha. Ended the night with installing the rear dumb seals. Went so smooth decided to call it a night.

Re: 1965 C20 fleet side longbed DD low budget build.

Matt--what springs are you missing?

mattbert56 04-21-2015 02:00 PM

Re: 1965 C20 fleet side longbed DD low budget build.

In the picture. The blue one on the top right. The 1/8 rod behind it. The parking brake spanning bar. the the two slotted steel pins that stick threw the rubber boots on the wheel cylinder. And the swinging arm that interacts with the adjuster that I believe is pinned up on the top or the rear brake shoe.. I'm worried they may have been thrown out. :/

mattbert56 04-21-2015 02:03 PM

Re: 1965 C20 fleet side longbed DD low budget build.

Oh and the small red spring that's a return for that adjuster arm. That one happen to be new ish from when I ulcer it apart but shouldn't be difficult to figure out a replacement. I found that a 1971 C20 had 90% of the correct springs. And only a few are a tad shorter. This is the closest Iv found for a "complete hardware kit"

Sorry didn't get the picture uploaded until now. It needs a lot of TLC but the drivetrain is all original and seems to be in working order. I have a '65 ton that will take the place of this mangled sheet metal. The '65 has 66K original miles on it. Also will give me a spare 292 and 4speed for the K20. Your truck is coming along nice. I hope to get to this project one of these days. I have several on my plate towork on.

Trucks looking good. Awesome start. Are you planning on keeping the 292 in it?

Re: 1965 C20 fleet side longbed DD low budget build.

Well today was a parts picking up /ordering day. But got two engine mounts. Big bag of shinny new grade 8 bolts. two weld on D loops. A clutch kit. intake gasket. Oil pan gasket. And put the oil pump on order. It'll be in by 7 tomorw. :metal: this weekend tho went up to visit two friends in Sacramento foot hills region and felt the trip was worth it. For one kimbLe (better known as 61k10) is an awesome guy. Very old school And a good ol boy. You can tell. Very generous with some transfer case parts I have been long needing and looking for. But the Thursday trip was great caught some good size fish to.
Back to trucks.. got the motor ready to instal tomorrow if the rain clears any time. Pulled off intake&exhaust. Along with front grill and core support. Pulled the old 292 out with the cracked block. And found my long lost flywheel. :chevy: so hoping to work outside a bit tomorw but if not. It's full speed ahead on that transfer case. That's thing is getting finishedif it likes it or not. Big thanks to 61 k10 tho. I do t think I would be finishing this case if it wasn't for him.

She's back in and sitting Purdy. :) oh yeah! went in like a breeze. is all I can say. Put a high volume oil pump in it. The clearance was so darn close between the crank and pump I had to grind it a bit more for my own comfort. Also some pictures from the other day tho. Got a new clutch setup that I tossed in. Still more to come tho. Going to try and start the motor today.

Be careful with High volume pumps...they're known for breaking camshafts on these. :chevy:

No, its how high you rev them...issue is that a high volume pump will pump some 50+ pounds when cold and up to 70 pounds at rpm which is to much and way more than needed. I went with a melling standard volume pump. At rpm I'll see 40 pounds which is plenty for a 6 banger. But you should be fine if you run a thinner 10-30 and don't rev it up to 6K. lol

mattbert56 04-26-2015 04:38 PM

Re: 1965 C20 fleet side longbed DD low budget build.

I guess. Thing is I ordered a factory and the high volume pump. The high volume one is the same as factory size and everything. The normal one that was "stock" was 3 inches taller and looked like it was for a completely different motor. So I figured high volume won't hurt anything. Plus it doesn't get to cold in my area so this summer it should run fine. And if need be just find an original pump from maybe napa or auto zone and tull the pan to Toss that in. Won't take more than an hour. If that.

It'll be fine i think, and actually its the other way around(lol)...the high volume pump is bigger than the low volume which may even be the reason you had to do a bit a grinding. lol I know when I put my pump in I starred at the small bit of clearance between the pump and one of the crank balancers, I was like..."Uh huh, Nope...you getting a little metal shaved off", but then I just said heck with it and bolted it down and rotated the assembly by hand watching the clearance and all seemed fine...Guess we'll find out when that buzzin half dozen gets its 1st 6k rev. lol

Re: 1965 C20 fleet side longbed DD low budget build.

That we will brother haha. Yeaa if I ever kick a rod on that cylinder that be a noisy day. I'm just going to run some thin oil for the break in period to play it safe and see what she runs up to. But if this just strips out my distributor gear on the cam then heck with it. I'll go buy a new bump stick. . Also. Wheat I Ment by the size of the pump. The "stock" oil pump was 3 inches taller and larger than the high volume. I think the box was miss labeled.

Oh she will purr soon. Taking the brakes today. I really really don't want to but figured all the more reason to have it done sooner. My goal is Friday now. There's a big car show at buns and burgers in town every year to kick off the summer car shows. Going to be 200 cars plus. :)

Okay so after pulling the hair out of my head 10 times I'm about 80 percent done with the brakes. I need a few springs and two adjusters for the front brakes and them I'm done. Other than bleeding the system. Also tackled my king pin bearings and races. Found the problem I think  pit everything back in and she's as tight as 10 lb test fishin line with a 30 lb fish on Her. Should not have any problems with wheel camber. Tonight I'm going to tackle the transfer case. Have to change out idler shaft and the gears on it. Along with re sealing it all. Hoping to close shop by midnight. Just to wake up at 6 and start it all again
