You aren't the only one that did the welding with the gas off. I did not find out real quick either why my welds looked like crap. |

You may think that your car is relatively rot free but, nobody really knows until they play…
The Knot Wheel of Truth!(™) http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2294.jpg ( a bit like Wonder Womans ‘Lasso of Truth’ But without Linda Vaughn…and the shorts…and Boobs) As I had stripped out the interior- well as much as there is- to perform the repairs above - I decided that a quick run over with ‘The Knot Wheel of Truth’ (™) was in order to knock off the ‘surface’ rust and dirt accumulated over the years before treating with a layer of Schutz to help protect and reduce the noise level in Woodys cab. Looks good… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2282.jpg Now, I already knew about this - http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2281.jpg - on the drivers side toe board but ‘The Knot Wheel of Truth’ highlighted a few other issues… This on the bottom of the ‘A’ pillar http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2284.jpg A number of ‘pin holes’ http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2285.jpg And a corresponding bit of Frilly on the passengers side toe board http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2286.jpg (That is a shadow by the way - just looked at the picture and had to go back out to the shed to check as gave myself a fright!) So…All in all not so bad, in fact a lot better than I was expecting for a 50 year old ex service truck. Question is… On the ‘pin holes’ the surrounding metal is pretty good, not soft and took a fairly good beating from a pair of scissors I happened to have to hand. Would you cut it out or spot repair it with weld and grinding? It is the area under the drivers heel below the accelerator pedal. Using only the highest quality CAD http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2279.jpg I used some of the removed panels to shape this. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2293.jpg To repair the ‘A’ Pillar. No picture of the finished item but looks pretty good. Toe board was repaired in an equally ‘Womble’ way Cut Cut http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2296.jpg ( I tacked the bolt on there to give me something to hold whilst positioning the patch and also somewhere to stick the earth) Buzz Buzz http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2297.jpg Quite pleased with that. Running out of time to patch up the passenger side I decided to finish off the ‘B’ Pillar http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2292.jpg And throw some red oxide at the back of the cab. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2295.jpg The sins can now be seen in all their glory…An appointment with Mr Millar will be forth coming soon. Next will be to repair the passengers side, fix the pin holes (method dependant on advice) then a skim of seam sealer, paint and seal the floor, and move on to the next thing on the list. P. :D |

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Paul you did a nice job on the cab corner repair .
it looks 100% better than it did before and you are learning that you can do it your self and save a lot of $$$ . and it feels good when you can look at it and say I did it myself . |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Looking good paul .

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Give yourself a pat on the back! The cab corner repair looks great. Floor repair too.

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Way to go Paul. Time well spent. Feels pretty good huh?

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Looks good, well done.I think you would have found that if you would have cut the cab corner of the on the flat area in the back instead of getting into the contour it would have lined up easier.

Completely agree on the cut. My thinking was that I could loose the join in the pressing. But, as the panel is behind the bed and so unseen, it was a bit of a mistake. Never mind, will know for the next time! P. :D |

I too have a knot wheel of truth, but recently I have wished I didn't :waah:. Cab corner came out great. Have you tried welding over a piece of copper for the pin holes? push a drill through the hole so you've a nice hole to weld, put the piece of copper on the back of the hole and then plug weld.

Quick update for those of you that are interested and for those of you that are not….Meh…
Decided to cut the pin holes out and make a proper repair on the drivers side. Started with this. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2302.jpg The other holes will be attended to tomorrow before you ask. After a little measuring and some Chop Chop action… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2303.jpg Knocked up a patch. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2304.jpg Aannnnnnnndddddd… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2305.jpg Glad I did decide to replace as the offending bit of removed floor board was getting a little thin. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2306.jpg So…tomorrow is parents evening for my Little Princess/ Evil Witch so will get back on it Thursday. NEXT!!! P. :D |

I have no idea why this, and the corresponding hole in the bed, where made but they signify the last holes to be filled with the aid of the sparkly stick. I bet you are as bored with these updates as I am…. So have a picture of the floor http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2321.jpg painted with http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2328.jpg and then covered in http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2327.jpg Managed to start finishing off the brake instal http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2331.jpg and spent a hour making a rather fetching bracket to move the rear brake hose from the passenger side to the drivers side. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2332.jpg http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2335.jpg Did a whole bunch of other bits including installing the PCV but nothing that warrants any of our time to record. Boom. Etc. P. :D |

Good thing I had my phone handy and I was able to see the attached pics. Thanks for keeping your build thread safe for kids of all ages. But seriously, how big has that hole? Beer can pass-thru? |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Johnny,
I edited my previous verbiage to make it more Family Friendly - have to admit to being in a rather poor mood yesterday and references to a 'Glorious Aperture" would probably not paint me in the best light... Anyway... How big is it... Too small for a beer, probably about 1" 1/2? I am finding more evidence that Woody was going to be on Bags and wondered if it might be something to do with this. Hole is obviously fairly recent in his history. Did manage to close up the opening but got over confident and managed to put too much heat into the panel and have a slight ripple. Was going to get pee'd off but it is so low behind the bed that it is completely hidden from view. Next job is to move the rear axle back 1" and then get the truck down to Jay's for a layer of 'Glen Miller' to hide the sins. Hows your build coming along? Not seen an update in a while or did I miss it? P. :D |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Yes, your assumption that the hole would be a pass-thru for airlines or wiring sounds plausible.
Now about "Glenn Miller". I was hoping someone else would ask, as I've read this before in your thread and I don't want to look like a dummy for asking. Is there a brand of body filler named after the big bandleader? What are you saying? |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Johnny, it's rhyming slang (I think) Glen Miller = filler. It's this strange custom they have in the "deep south" No such nonsense up here t' frozen north :)

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Hmm, interesting.
|
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Thank you Ian for the translation.
Indeed, Glen is the world famous rhyming slang for Bondo - Wag - Body Filler etc and as I am yer actual Cockney born within the sound of Bow Bells, I feel eminently qualified, and indeed justified!, to exercise my birth right. I am not, however, Dick Van Dyke ( and before you ask, no, that is not rhyming slang....) P. :D |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
I'm no less confused... but I believe the Dick Van Dyke reference relates to his poor attempt at a Cockney accent, here:

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Gawd bless you Mary Lamebridge....
Possibly the film that made a generation of Americans believe they could perform an English accent.... Mind you, John Wayne did the same for us Brits... I say old chap, would you mind awfully dismounting your stead and partake in a glass of milk.... And now back to your scheduled program. P. :D |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Quick update as I start to reassemble Woody.
The fuel gauge has not worked correctly since I took ownership, the problem becoming very apparent when I took the sender out to replace the gasket a few months ago. Anybody spot what the issue might be? http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2336.jpg With the tank rattling I spent a happy 30 minutes using the skills honed from years on the Fairground ‘Fishing the ball from the jar…and failing’ to retrieve the offending article and source of the fuel gauge not gauging… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2337.jpg Armed with my best plumbing arsenal http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2338.jpg Attached the live feed back onto the control…box? http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2339.jpg And tested with my faithful multi meter…… WIN!!! No picture so you will have to take my word for it. However… Rather surprised at the state of the seal after 4 months. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2341.jpg. Looks worse than the one I replaced. I will be continuing to put Woody back together but, unfortunately, he might well be looking for a new home. So, if you are interested in a genuine, solid truck with most of the upgrades that you would require to be done then this is the one for you. Drop me a PM if you want a chat. And on that Bomb Shell…. P. :D |

I like to get my moneys worth…. So you can probably guess what I have spent my day doing. Yup. Gardening. The amount of dirt that was ingrained into Woddys chassis during his working life could have been used to solve the Potato Famine, providing arable farming for entire generations. Apart from the fact that Woody is a Truck. And the Potato Famine finished in 1842. But other than that… My garage is now covered in a thick layer of California and the chassis has been hit with more of that Vican stuff. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2342.jpg Got bored with cleaning stuff so fitted this. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2348.jpg Checked pedal ratios and fannied around sorting out a few other odds and ends. Then this happened… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2345.jpg http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2347.jpg http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2350.jpg Can only assume that Woody was being used to transport some sort of Herbs during his time in the forestry commission…. Hope the effects have worn off by tomorrow so I can get it all bolted back together. As one of my favourite childhood characters would say… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...0199112791.jpg Until Tomorrow… Goodnight! P. :D |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Mad progress again Paul.
I guess like many of us, you do get to k ow the truck pretty intimately. Just off to help Martin with his house, but shout if you need a hand. |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Thanks for the offer Rian.
Fortunately I have an army of unwilling helpers to assist, once I remind them that they live rent free so the occasional bit of 'KP' is a small price for them to pay... Must admit that for once I was not up at 6am as is my norm, think I must have pushed myself a little far yesterday... Anyway, today I will be using that bit of steel plate! More to come. P. :D |

So, today had a full schedule of work planned.
First, I chopped some wood and stacked it like so. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2351.jpg Then I applied a little heat http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2352.jpg Made sure I had the appropriate tools laid out ready - notice safety gear. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2354.jpg Quite pleased with the results. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2356.jpg Yup, a great day working on the truck…. NOW THATS A GREAT REPORT PAUL !!

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
So after a day off, used up 3 more of these
http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2346.jpg Cleaning thie axle and the other chassis rail - Axle seen here part way through Vactan coating as I had forgotten to take a picture after wire brushing it down… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2357.jpg http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2358.jpg Didn't take long..only 4 hours… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2360.jpg Axle done, will paint it tomorrow. One question for the hardcore C10 men. How do you remove this? http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2361.jpg The old Panhard rod mount. Somebody asked me why I was going to all this trouble if I was selling Woody. Because C10… Or Racecar… but probably Stupidity. Right, off for a beer. P. :D |
