Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
Thanks guys...I has been a tough few months, on top of all that stuff I have had my push mower, riding mower, weed eater, and microwave all break. Yesterday my AC unit on my house died. It was 92 here yesterday and the house was hot. That is getting replaced on Friday. Seems like everything that I own is breaking down at the worst possible time...:waah:
On the bright side, I ran into the HR manager at a local company I applied to and recently had interviews for a Manufacturing Engineer position. He told me he was working on something for me and I should hear something in the next day or so. Hopefully it will be something good. BTW - Captain, I purchsed an EZ Router ACP 4'x8' table with a Thermodynamics plazma. EZ Router is in Mineola, TX just about a hour from me. |

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
Thanks for the support!
Good News!! I recieved and accepted an offer from the local company (Joy Global) as a Manufacturing Engineer. It is a step back in overall responsibility, but back to my roots of my career. The company is well established and recently has approved about $40 million for improvements and additions to the facilities here in Longview. I start on Monday. I am looking forward to this new direction in my professional career. I also recieved my new plasma table yesterday and spent today getting set up and put together. I had one small issue and ez Router took care of it quickly. I only need to run my 50 amp circuit for the plasma machine. I have the parts and will do that in the morning. I have some 1/4" plate already and will cut some parts tomorrow! First parts will be LS motor mounts for my son's project. Here are some pictures of the machine: http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...0/100_3865.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...0/100_3864.jpg http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...0/100_3863.jpg |

That plasma cutter is a thing of beauty! Ohhh what I would do with one of those !
Rock on man :metal: |
Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
any new pics of progress?
|
Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
No pic's yet but have made some progress on the truck. Most of my time has been working at Joy Global and football ball started for my 5th grader. My Fab business with the plasma has not done well mostly since I now work 40+ hours M-F. I really enjoy my new job, but wish my side business was doing better. While I have the plasma, I have been making some parts for my projects. For this one, I made a mid mount altenator bracket set, and a mount for the pan hard on the trailing arm. I have also made some air bag plates for the front and rear for the next phase of this build.
This past weekend, my boys and I spent some time at the shop on Korbin's truck and Owen's go kart. While we were there, I got some time on my trailing arms. Korbin Welded up the boxing plates I made for the ends and welded on the pan hard bar mount to the right side arm. Next we are goning to skip weld the seam to stiffen up the arm. I'll try to get some pictures next time we go to the shop. |
Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
Here is a picture of the PHB mount on the passenger side trailing arm. We will also add a shock mount to this boxed area. We might do something like Porterbuilts cross bar mount. I don't know yet. Most of the effort is going into Korbin's truck.
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...1F08303197.jpg Mine is just getting kicked along with my left foot as time and opportunity allows... Owen is playing in the division championship game for our 5th grade football league on Saturday. We win that one and it is off to the 5th Grade Super Bowl. We are working the kids hard this week. We have the kids to win it all we just need to prepare them for 2 tough games. |
Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
Well, we moved my truck to the shop with Korbin's. I got a 10 bolt disc brake rear end from a camaro/firebird that is already set up for the trailing arms. I got it from member tex_waco_usmc, Chris. Great guy and had a great time talking to him when we met to get the rearend.
Owen did not win his last football game, so we did not go to the league Super Bowl. That's OK, we got to go hunting the weekend that the game would have been. That morning he got his first buck. He was out with my Dad when he shot him. Its a good sized 9 point white tail. It was about a 1/2" short on one tine of being a legal 10 point. All in all a good weekend. http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...DD7F0B067F.jpg Once I swap in this new rear, I will finish the brakes and then the fuel system is next on the list. We did get Korbin's truck to a rolling chassis state so we made good progress... |

looks like a happy kid

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
Well on the trip where Owen got his deer, I scored a rear end out of a Camaro/Firebird with disc brakes that I will be putting in my truck. I need to get a measurement off a stock truck but not in a big rush. Looking forward to the new year and making a few changes in my life and hobby.
Main focus now is to finish a go kart for Owen and finish Korbin's truck before working on mine. We have a new goal for Korbin's truck to have it running/driving by GG's show in March at TMS. He wants to take it around the autocross on Sunday if they allow newer model vehicles in like they did this year. Hope everyone had a great 2012 and looking forward to a outstanding 2013! |
Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
Well, yesterday while I was working on Korbin's truck, Owen helped me out on this one. He started wire wheeling the floor to get the rust off. He got some done and says he will finish for me. Once he is done, I'll spray Eastwoods Rust Convertor and then coat that with their Rust Encapsulator paint. That should hold it untill I get to work on the rust repair of the floor and rockers. Thanks Owen!

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
Sorry to see your truck had been vandalized it looked really clean.... Haters!
Atleast you have a second chance to do it all over again. Read the build you are doing with your son too! Love seeing father son builds. Keep at it man! Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
Just thought I would say this truck is still waiting its turn. I hope to get at it again after the first of the year. Need to sell a couple of vehicles though...
My plan is to get it running and driving before touching any of the body work. I believe I have everything I need to do that except for a drive shaft. I will most likely get a new one made locally. I still need to finish some of the fab work on the rear suspension, especially the shock mounts. Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I have only 8 more working days this year!! Then I am off till the 6th of January! |
Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
We'll wait.... Happy Holidays!

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
Karl, glad to know I anit the only East Texas yokel on the broad. Only thing I know about Longview, is Eastman Chemical via working there 3+ years. Tyler to Longview drive got old FAST!!!!
Your truck will get its day. At least you have a project with good history and passing it on to your sons. My grand dads '82 was stolen never to be seen again ( he had a '60 f100 but that was not my taste in truck)... But I am glad it was stolen honestly, it prevented a huge fight among the 6 grandsons... Merry Christmas to you and yours from right down the road!!! |

Well I am born and raised Chapel Hill. Joy Global is unknown to me. I am pipe designer so that's how I got in Eastman.
Get on the truck when you can Id like join the build ranks someday!!! |
Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
Quick post here...Somethings have happened lately that may result in this project getting some attention soon...
Waiting to see the outcome of another issue, but it go the way I think it will, we will be making some changes and working on this one... |

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
I did not think it was going to take this long to get the decision made to be able to move forward. Its been 4 weeks and still not resolved...
In the mean time, I have been collecting parts and looking for parts that I need. I am on the fence about a couple of parts at this point. One of which is the frame. Since this truck is mostly original to the way it came from my Grandpa, I am reluctant to cut up the frame for a few mods I want to make that would be hard to change back later. I found a complete LWB frame and suspension for about $200, but I would have to drive 3.5 hours to get it. It solves the frame mod issue and gets me a 12 bolt housing that I do not have. What do you guys think? The mods are basically, raise the front crossmember like it did in Korbin's truck, do a rear frame mod to raise the rails up 4" like Rob did to his shop truck JT, and then do the LWB to SWB conversion. Once all that would be done, I would get (or build) an X brace around the trailing arm suspension like I have seen Porterbuilt make.... The end result for the exterior will be a shop truck theme in the original light blue with a white grill and bumper and this logo on the doors in white: http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps2ed74f36.jpg That is the farm that my family has and where I learned to drive that truck before Grandpa gave it to me. The farm has been in our family for 164 years and my sister and I are now the 5th or 6th generation owners. |

I think Grandpa would be fine doing what ever you do with the truck as long as you keep it. build it the way YOU want
|
Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
Thanks guys, I will be doing it for ME, but I think to honor him and the trucks life on the farm, this idea is what I will end up with...

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
I really like the logo and the fact your family has had the ranch so long. Cool story , cool truck!

I did find a complete rear end housing with trailing arms and stock springs and all the retainers and bolts for $100 bucks from a guy in Hurst. We picked it up on Sat. on our way back home. I got the housing all stripped down minus taking out the pinion on Sunday. I will try to post some pictures in the next day or two. One brake drum was completely worn through! it came off in two pieces... |
Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
Cleared another hurdle this weekend on my way to getting my stuff in order around my house to make room for working on this one. "Bubba" got sold and will be delivered to the new owner the weekend of April 12th. My parts collection is growing for this one and looks like I am down to just a few items to get it running and on the road (no rust repair or paint and body at this time).

Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
Here are my short term plans for now, with notes on what I still need to get for each step.
1. Install PBFab Lower Forward Arms, modiified McGaughy's Drop spindles for C5 front brakes, 13" C5 front brakes, No Limit rack & pinion conversion, PBFab Addco 1.25" sway bar, 3/4T front springs with 2 coils removed and KYB Gas-A-Just shocks. 2. Install stock 12 bolt rear. Install 4:10 gears, C5 rear brakes with parking brake in the hat of the rotor. Use the existing 4" drop springs and 2" drop blocks and CPP C-Notch. - Need to redrill the axles for 5 lug and machine the regioster to 2.78" for the C5 rotor. - Need to finish my custom Panhard Bar. - Need to design and fabricate rear shock mounts. - Flip the Trailing Arm mounts on the cross member. - Need new bearings and shims to install gears/rebuild axle. - Need to clean and paint axle housing. More to come... |
Re: Project Old Blue, 1965 C10, Rebuild Version 2010
3. Install Power Brake booster and new Master Cylinder and Prop Valve to work with the C5 brakes.
- Possible need to fab new mount plate for booster. - Might need to modify flex lines from MC/Prop Valve to Frame tabs. 4. Install 5.3/4L60e set up, using Spectre Performance Intake tube/filter (#9900) and Headman Muscle Rod LS swap headers (#45666). Re-work stock harness myself. Mount PCM and Fuse block under the hood. I am still working on ideas as to where to mount them. - Need Frame/Engine mounts. Leaning toward CPP’s new Sheet Metal Frame Mounts #6372MP-SM ($159), and there sliding mounts. Not sure yet, may fab my own… - Trans cross member…CPP, PBFab, I may fab my own… - May need to do some fab work to mount the radiator and oil coolers to the core support. - Need Fuel Pump for use in an ’87 sending unit/tank. I plan to mount the tank in the front of the bed with an old barn wood box built to hide it. ($100) - Drive Shaft, have one may need to be modified for length… 5. Install Bench Seat and Seat Belts. - Need to decide on reworking stock seat or just use one that I have from an ’82 and throw a blanket over it… 6. Make it street legal. - Headlights, Taillights, Turn Signals, Horn, Wipers, etc… |
