Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
You really are marching right along with this build Andy.
As you say, some skill helps you go a long way, but you also are prioritising all your work, which makes a huge difference. I continue to be super impressed with the way you are turning this truck around. |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Thanks Rian (think I called you Grizz on your thread last night) means a lot when you get nice feedback, keeps one motivated.
This build is more a 'get it on the road' as quick as possible so Mark can use this year and continue as a rolling project. However it's a balance between a temp repair that can be reworked after registration and MOT or do the job properly first time. We're had a bit of scope creep, like the painting but had time to do this as we had a bit of time slippage whilst we await parts from USA. |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
its like an early xmas, Mark turned up with another pair of smoothie rims, the brake unions arrived from USA and a big box of goodies from LMC.
So tonight's achievements are another rim painted http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psdo5d7gwf.jpg made the front brake pipe from master cylinder to front T piece http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pshpn1gcnq.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psn3mpuh7y.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pscnfm0u87.jpg and this time I remembered to put the unions on before swagging the ends! |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Awesome… :mm:

I plan on replacing all my brake lines up front too, as they are perfectly functional, but I suspect not correctly made up. Will be good if I remember the unions before swagging....... |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
yep done that a few time and lest the unions off, nothing looks worse than lobby and kinked brake lines

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
got some more painting and sanding done today, all one side done now. Also 2 wheels painted and put on the white band tyres. At this point Mark turned up with his son on route to a local hot rod show. So we pushed it on to the road to get a better view of it, as it hasn't moved off the drive for 7 months. Have to say I think it's really coming together and looks bloody awesome, low and long. Gave us a great boost to push on. Not bad progress since we only started mid April.

The rims are 16" and I think they fill the arches better than 15"'s |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Looking good Ian .

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
That sits really nice. is the first side shot with air in the bags? how low does it go when they are deflated

Nice job rebuilding the driver's side.

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
x2! the repair turned out great, I will have to "re-do" some repairs on my cab done by a previous owner so this is really helpful,
|
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
nice progress =0)
esp. doing your own metal work is saving you load(s) on the funny money =0) |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Thanks Guys, must admit quite impressed myself how it came out. The investment in the metal bender certainly made the finished repair look quite professional

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Now onto the tear down of the passenger side rocker. I have repair panels for inner and outer rocker so the whole lot is coming out.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psfk3vc5u2.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps1n9toiji.jpg Outer ends where the new panels attach to is sound, so that's a bonus http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psrgtdezfy.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pspjn12bqi.jpg |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
That 1st pic shows how close the fuel tank is to the areas being repaired. Please take precautions to protect against sparks! ;)

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
myself and Mark had a few hours on it last night and tonight. here is Mark, stripping the paint off the hood.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psmkqpmqlv.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psoiwbkvrs.jpg Whilst Mark was doing a nice job keeping himself clean I was hacking out the rusty old floor and got covered in rust, dust and grinding bits, don't you just love the smell and taste of ground metal! http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psagi6ig3r.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psewwp4gnv.jpg This was as much as needed to be cut out, not too bad and similar to the other side. First up outer rocker back on and secured with self tapers, door re hung to check gap at the bottom, in the end door was on and off about 3 times whilst I fine tweaked the clearance. Then drilled 6mm holes to plug weld rocker to door posts, then the welds will be ground down and when painted it will look like factory spot welds. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pseuvtyvfq.jpg Always good to turn the corner from removing metal to refitting metal :-) Started to weld in the rocker and my auto darkening welding mask started to pack up a flicker, so a touch of the arc eye now! arrgghh! Tomorrow should see floor completed and wing repaired and back on, pressing ahead as the windscreen man is coming wednesday to fit a new screen. |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Saturday was another full day on the truck , but this time mob handed with 3 of us, Mark, Ben and myself.
Mark was in charge of paint striping, Ben set himself up on the grass and was in charge of the body shop, filling and sanding and I was on the welding and grinding. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pskdj0xcs5.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psvdfhyyjr.jpg Inner and outer rocker installed and plug welded through top of rocker to inner rocker http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psf2edgap9.jpg I fabricated repair panels for the cab floor, only tacked in here and still need to be seam welded. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pse3o4vcfy.jpg Windscreen man coming wednesday, so we took out the old screen, no rot found under the window seal, so a clean up with the wire brush, rust treatment and then paint. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psa8kxsham.jpg Hood was stripped to bare metal, filled and primed. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psnciygs1e.jpg passenger side wing refitted and grafted on the lower repair patch http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psicawypi4.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pspnuj7qpn.jpg Cab top painted in off white, first mist coat, next coat I'll mask the edge between blue and white. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psghvfcmch.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psherd011w.jpg It was a long and very productive day. I only came in when it went dark. we dont get too many nice days in UK, so make the most whilst the sun is shining :) |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

Thanks guys, we have a target to get it on the road hopefully mid September, subject UK registration etc.
Air valves arrived today:) Purchased 2nd hand off ebay, but very little used. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psgxx3lacj.jpg |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
main event for today windscreen fitted with a nice green tint. Prior to fitting we painted the dash and windscreen surround. The screen was fitted by a UK american screen specialist. one man on his own and took 1 1/2 hours, which goiing by others comments on the 63 screen is very good going.
Then rain stopped play :( But not before the screen was in :) http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psuzxzqlsf.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psrdyfgmuy.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pspzqbzsvb.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psvgh9gnnk.jpg |

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Brake parts arrived today and I got new bearings for both front axles from a local supplier.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psbe64tcku.jpg The original front cylinders where shot, with the alloy cylinders oxidizing and turning to dust http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psr6c21byb.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psqeakbnof.jpg Old bearings out and new in http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psn2dfxonf.jpg Each side stripped down to just backplate and then rebuilt http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pswuq3spfi.jpg certainly makes it easier to rebuild the brakes with the hub off. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psl6uftobz.jpg Next up the rear brakes to rebuild with new seal kit in the cylinders and new brake shoes. also need to rework the gear lever, the PO must have had it bent so its very close to driver. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pszrvmnix4.jpg |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Excellent progress Andy.
I suspect my truck will be getting new bearings as well while I am down there. |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Quote:
http://www.brt-group.com Each bearing has a number on it LMxxxx, I'll post a photo later of the part numbers, they cost £6.00 reach plus VAT, so you need 4 off. 2 smaller front bearings and 2 larger rear bearings. So £12 per axle, compared to £57 per axle from a UK based USA parts supplier!!! |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Part numbers for inner and outer front wheel bearings UK supplier, link above
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psahgyy4rn.jpg rear brakes stripped and ready to clean and paint http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psztyy5s5x.jpg rear brakes rebuilt http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pso8h6uwot.jpg I was looking at the mechanism on the hand brake and wondering how the hell it worked? I compared it to the other side and realised it was missing a lever between the 2 shoes, Grrr! No chance of buying one over here quickly, so I made one from some flat bar I had. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pstt6e2dym.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps5zp3l4l8.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pspatm0szk.jpg Then the end snapped off the brake cylinder pin :-( http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psksong0q0.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psierym1a7.jpg thank goodness for having a welder :-) Both rear brakes rebuilt tonight. So hopeful to bleed brakes tomorrow and have all brakes working. |
