Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
well, the painter came over again tonight to paint the underside of the hood and help hang some fenders :metal:
They're just mocked up loose for now as we need to tighten down the rad support....somehow it moved since we unbolted everything....think it was the heat  Best news of the night is the painter is going to come back to do the wetsand and buffing!!! :metal: It already looks GREAT! Here is a reflection pic I took...and the one victim of the paint job (painter said no big deal...he'll fix...landed as last coat of clear was drying) http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010003.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010005.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
I was shocked how well the color matched. You might remember that the firewall, dash, and windshield frame had already been painted. We sanded and re-painted the windshield frame to make it slicker and I was worried about the paint match....but not after I pulled back the windshield gasket :metal:

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
It's a PERFECT match!
Here are some misc pics. Got the final wiring done (other than some zip ties I'll be doing this week to clean up under the dash) Got the tach dash hooked up to the oil line...will install once I get the dash wiring finished (saves me from leaning under the dash- I can reach right through) Here is the rear wiring. PO purchased an adapter to have a trailer wiring harness plug directly into the rear light harness. Got that all installed. Just have to hook up the grounds and install the rear light cups and then the lenses. But I will wait for the cups and lenses until after the wetsand and buffing is done... Please excuse the dust http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010012.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010013.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
You might have noticed in that picture that the tailgate was on...took a little persuasion but it went in. I spent the beginning of the evening worried about scratching paint as I installed the handle and hardware. Cleaning up and using penetrating fluid really made the original hardware work EXCELLENT. very easy to pull and no squeaks.
going together... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010009.jpg took most of the tape off before this pic.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010007.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
I did get the handle straight before installing ;)
Here are the money shots. Like I said, still have to adjust the doors and then the fenders and the hood....but we're getting there. Going out of town so no work on it till Thursday night unless Jason gets some time but he's got a few other jobs lined up as well.... This was earlier just after unmasking it http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010001.jpg the firewall paint was from before...really happy it's a perfect match! http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010002.jpg and the full shots...sorry for the bad pics...it was after midnight ;) http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010010.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010011.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
You'll notice the bungee cord on the front latch....the new hood springs are so good it tries to open the hood unless it's completely latched and I left the latch off for now until we get it all adjusted...

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Well, I ended up staying in town which worked out where I got a couple hours to work on the blazer. One of those nights where I was working hard but not a lot got done. Touched up the hitch because I noticed it had surface rust inside so I cleaned it up and then sprayed it. Also touched up the hood latch so it'll have time to dry and I can put it on later this week.
Looks much better than it did last night http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...ly28th2010.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...8th2010003.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Then moved onto the tedious task of going through the parts to see what I had and what else I needed....
Here's a picture of stainless fastners I got off ebay...nicely labeled and divided to make it easy....not as cheap as buying yourself but a REAL time saver http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...8th2010007.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Got the door latches fitted loosely...will tighten them down once we do the final adjustment of the doors....just wanted them to keep me from forgetting and letting the doors slam and almost chipping the paint at the rockers
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...8th2010002.jpg Then moved on to the door handles. One was okay getting on.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...8th2010006.jpg The other....not so much. Got it on and when I was tightening it down one of the bolts became stuck. I didn't apply much pressure and tried to back it out only to have it break off inside the handle....cheap repops.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...8th2010008.jpg Then moved onto the mirrors. still need three stainless screws for the passenger side. Went ahead and threw the driver's side on... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...8th2010009.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Buttoned up the rear wiring some more. Found I didn't have the pigtails for the reverse lights so I waited on those. Got the grounds run for the sidemarkers and grounded the trailer wiring and tidied that up....
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...8th2010004.jpg Then got the headlights on http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...8th2010005.jpg Was going to install the glovebox but I had forgotten the arm that holds it up. I noticed when I unmasked it that the color is a 100% match to the original paint under the SPID label cover sheet http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...8th2010010.jpg Random shot of the new hood hinges painted and installed http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...8th2010001.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
And here's how I left it. Bible Study and prayer meeting tomorrow night so not much if any work will be done...so next update most likely on Thursday night.

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Dang repop door handles........same thing happened to me. It's so they can sale more........it's a conspiracy. The paint came out awesome!!!!!

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
That's what it's like to not get much done huh? Well just keep not getting much done and you'll be cruising in a few days.

I worked on it last night and got the passenger mirror mounted, painted up a few seat parts and the glovebox door stop so that can go in, and then worked on the rear bumper. Got the bumper brackets mounted up (man, there are some tight spaces back there with the tank/fuel lines/hitch) and got the license plate mount and light on the bumper. Got the trailer wiring all wrapped in loom and cleaned up/tucked away nicely....then went to put the bumper on and NO GO :waah: The hitch will have to come off. The PO must have taken off/moved the plate to run the hitch. Because it will not work. So I will be taking the hitch off and sell that. Then get to take off the trailer wiring I spent time looking pretty :sumo: Next owner can buy a hidden hitch or a different style if they choose. I'll get the pictures loaded up later today or this evening. Hope to make a lot of progress over the weekend! |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Man I havent checked in lately!! Paint looks GOOD!
What style hitch is it? And it WONT work with sport bumper and blazer tank? |

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
VA72C10,
I have to tell you that is one great looking Blazer. I painted my first Truck (57 Chevy SHORTSTEP BIGWINDOW) almost that same color. I just looked through most of your thread and the picture from far off when the truck was in the Garage sideways got me thinking at first and then laughing once I figured out that the truck was setting on dollies. I couldn't figure out how in the heck you got that thing in there sideways. Anyway that is one nice blazer and look forward to seeing the finished product. JRBECK64 |

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Well, can't sleep so an update from Thursday night's work....
Part of Today's (saturday) plans are to clean up the wiring (again-it was nice till I cut the zip ties to find a key off drain we fixed) and then install the tach dash and glovebox door. Here's the wiring before.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...0th2010002.jpg Painted the glovebox catch and some seat parts... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...0th2010003.jpg Got the passenger side mirror installed http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...0th2010005.jpg And untaped the vin plate http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...0th2010001.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Put the license plate bracket onto the rear chrome sport bumper. Note here: when looking at the bumpers try to look for one with this tag indicating triple nickel plating as the chrome is much nicer....
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...0th2010008.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...0th2010007.jpg Bumper brackets ready to go on http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...0th2010009.jpg Brackets going on http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...0th2010011.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...0th2010012.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...0th2010013.jpg not much room to get your hand in there....and the other side is worse...used a magnet on the passenger side to get the washer and nut started... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...0th2010010.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
you'll notice I cleaned up the trailer wiring....well....I now get to take that out today with the hitch.....which I had painted....

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Looking like good progress.....Jonathan...just as an extra precaution, I sprayed the back of my bumpers with a clear paint....

the inners and hood still need some work. Might actually have to take the hood and passenger fender off to get them to work...will hopefully have Jason's help one night this week to get them fixed up. Today picked up the seats and the upholstry guy came over and measured for the custom door and rear side panels. I got the door latches adjusted since we adjusted the doors (actually removed shims) and gathered some more parts. Will post up progress pictures tomorrow. |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Wow that thing looks good...definitely want to see it finished.

Was supposed to go over and work on aligning the front end tonight but my mother in law was having chest pains and high blood pressure so I watched the girls and my wife went with her to the hospital.. So here are the progress pictures from Saturday. Got the trailer hitch off. http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010009.jpg I like the rear better without it http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010010.jpg Got the rear bumper on with the help of my brother in law... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010013.jpg Then put the light buckets in with new brass screws http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010019.jpg And put new gaskets, bulbs, and lenses on http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010020.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010021.jpg And the rear looks complete (minus the bulb holder hanging out where the marker light should be)! http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010022.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
When I took the hood hinges off to adjust the fenders I went ahead and touched up the bolts...
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010018.jpg Forgot to take pics with the fender off but here's during deconstruction :whine: http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010014.jpg Then wanted to put something on instead of taking parts off so I put the glovebox door on.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010012.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010011.jpg Got the driver's door lined up nicely.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010016.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010017.jpg And got the inner fenders on.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010015.jpg and left it here...hood and passenger fender still need some work and inners need work for all the bolt holes to line up http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010023.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Great progress! Man, I love that rear bumper! It looks perfect! +1 without the hitch.
I'm sure the new owner will want to tow their boat with this so, they can have a new one installed. |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
dude if it wasnt for paint it would be done nice work
