I'm into the body work now so its not that exciting , once I make some progress getting the body stripped down and new primer I will get some pic's up .
Seems like everyone likes the new roof rack including the shop cat . |

Hey Guys ... The Build is still alive and I have been picking at the truck , got the truck all stripped down and just finished epoxy primering the tailgate on saturday .
I have do some final blocking of areas on the panels and then get it prepped for the paint process . I'm pretty impressed that the whole truck only took less than 1 quart of all metal and that was for small dents and the roof was the worst of it . I also cleaned and prepped the insides of the door boxes and took Por-15 and a squeeze bottle and put a nice bead of the paint down the inside of the seam ... just enough to seal out any chance of rust down the road ... stuff worked great and just put enough but not close up the end drains in the doors . I still have to decide on the flares , I have bought the best flares in my opinion ... Xenon flares are great compared to the crappy bushwacker junk . I'm going to decide if I am going to cut in the area around the wells and the then mount the flares to be painted with them in place so there is no chance of them being stressed and paint peeling over time and I think that is going to be the best way . I also just ordered the last of the finish parts , mostly seals and gaskets . I still have to track down some headliner material and my buddy owns a glass company so I will have him out for a few beers while we install at new windshield . |
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
For the flares, just add a flex additive to the paint. cheap insurance IMO.

Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
Updates PLEASE !!!! this is an amazing build thread
better quality than extreme 4x4 would have done p.s. if you ever want to sell il give you everything I own as trade |

I did get a chance to do some painting ... Looks ok for a go truck ... I have moved on to the jams , and start putting her back together . I'm going to hold off on the seats I just want to get the truck on the road and I need a break .
I have a commercial consew sewing machine forsale so I am trying to work a trade out for a shop to redue my seats and they get the machine , so will see how that goes . Only parts I have to paint are the new Cowl induction hood and the cowl vent . I had a few sliders and they seemed to sand out ... I'm going to let all the paint harden up for a few weeks then knock everything down and wheel it up then all my glass can go in . |
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
Greg, it looks sweet! Nice job!
|
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
Thanks Buddy , its not bad for a in the middle of the shop paint job ... Now I have to come up with a strip combination after I rub the truck ... I was looking at my 96 cummins and it has a dark aqua with a light aqua and that looks pretty good .
|
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
Looks real nice! About the stripe, is it to separate the silver from the black? I think the light/dark aqua would look real good! Also, are you leaving the roof white?
|
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
It looks pretty darn good man!
A white stripe would look good. |
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
Separate the silver and black with a white pinstripe. It'll set it off!
|
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
I have a few questions:
Are you leaving the Cummins stock or doing power/reliability upgrades? What is the minimum lift required for a Cummins? Would 4.10 gearing be a Bad Idea? Are there any cockpit clearance issues (radio area, drink holders) with the NV4500 HD? I apologize if you answered these previously; multiple searches on this site are a bear due to re-search time requirements. I've converted my own '91 6.2 turbodiesel burb to a 2500 (hence the 4.10) but the 33" KM2s rub a little on turning. 20 year old suspension is crap anyways. When I replace springs though, I want it be lifted just enough to accommodate your drivetrain choice, because when the 6.2 goes it's Cummins Time. Oh and your Suburbeast is coming along nicely! |
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
For my build stock right now is just fine , I could see possibly fuel plate in the future but for a truck rolling on two different sizes 42 and 44"s with the 4.56 is just fine .
You can put a cummins in a stock truck just is a tight squeeze . I have a 1" aluminum body for my clearance ... my suspension is custom Deaver springs and gives me a good 10" lift . 4:10 is a good ratio depends on your tire size and trans . My NV4500 shifter is in the same location a stock shifter would come threw the floor on a factory truck . All I can say is look thru my build and it was a ton of work ... I have basiclly worked on the truck just about every day for the past year and a half ... should be done for spring . |
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
Greg,
thanks for the info on the clearances. I forgot all the trucks that came with manuals would have the same cockpit; good to hear it works fine. I know the Cummins likes to run lower than the 6.2 but you're right I could just keep putting on larger tires :) Yeah the work you've put into this thing is next level. Yours will be a factory-new rig that never was but should have been. |

Nice work! :metal:

Found some time to work on the rig ... got the body side bars on , painted the hood black and not sure how happy I am with that ... its on .
I just finished fabing up the grill . It was a GMC grill that I skinned the inside out and found some aluminum mesh ... think it looks like a ford raptor grill ...LOL My buddy put the windshield in last week , I was able to track down a factory NOS gasket ... it was a pain in the butt . I did side quarter windows and they were pretty tough plus I used sealant between the gasket and body to make sure no water gets in there . Headline and some of the inside panels are all back in . I put the 42's on the front when I was building my side steps ... Just picking at it .... enjoy the snow . |
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
Despite the fact that the hood would look more appropriate silver, the truck still looks bad ass! Looks like a classy zombie killer!
|
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
That thing looks like a beast now!
|
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
Beautiful!
|
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
I don't know if I like the hood black either. But, the sub looks sweet for sure. Nice work on the grill and steps. If you painted the roof black, that hood would look so sweet black!
|
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
I just wish the bumper was moved up about 2" so there isn't a huge gap. Other than that its kinda sweet. :)
|
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
I'm not sure on the black but paint is easy to change ... the gap will be addressed , I am not finished with the front bumper , along with fixing the gap I am making a hard cover to go over the top of the winch .
|
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
I only have one thing to say about this build.... AWESOME!!!!!!
I'm getting way too many ideas and wild dreams about Burb builds than I could ever hope to afford.. Jealousy, I have found it. |
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
This Por-15 paint that you sprayed on the frame, is that an oil-based paint? Do you need to add hardener to it? Can you use it on rusted spots? How did you grind/brush on top of the frame underneath the body?
|
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
Por works better with rust , I ground and sand blasted most of my frame . I applied my Por 15 with a spray gun .
I still have to paint the axles and other chassis parts and going to brush and spray ... stuff works great . |

Had some time to weld in some fillers and paint the bumper , looks pretty good , I made up a aluminum cover that will go over the winch to keep it out of the direct weather .
Started to put turn signals in ... they look great but the one on the passengers side did not lock the light socket in and waiting to hear back from Classic parts to see what they want to do . I have to make a custom secondary hood latch because the intercooler is right where the barb goes into the core support ... its allways something . Just keep making forward progress , I am hoping to have this done by spring . |
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
Why not just mount the bumper higher and do it the proper way? Rather than put a piece of metal in like people do with 3" body lifts. I dont understand...
|
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
If you look threw my build , truck has a 1 inch aluminum spacer on top of the poly body mounts . I fabricated the winch mount and had a bumper of a newer dodge . it was the only shell that would fit around my mount . plus I still cut the center out of the bumper .
The gap was not due to the a body lift just when you get into fabricating its not a exact . |

Found some time to pick at the truck ... All the door glass and most of the seals are in , waiting for the front door bead seals , did all new motors , the regulators were in great shape .
Not the truck is just nickel and dining me to death ... rear air bags , rear track bar and brackets , front ORF joints for my crossover steering , steering wheel and adapter . I'm adding the Firestone Air bags to control and body roll and also a rear track bar just incase I do any towing to keep the axle from pulling around . I'm down to putting the dash and door panels on the inside , then front end alignment , vent hoses and tubes . Then some chassis paint .... should be done by may . |
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
This has been one lengthy build, but when you're doing it to the quality levels that you are... I think the time will be WELLLLLLLLL worth the waiting.
|
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
Hey, at least you're getting down to the nitty gritty! It'll be drive time soon! Great work, keep at it!
|
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
Nice to see it in the home stretch, just awesome.:metal: I like the black hood but if it hasn't quite grown on you, have you considered leaving the cowl induction hump black and painting the sides silver? A small black pinstripe next to the black cowl would blend it in well. Just a thought, I like it fine like it is. Keep up the great work.
Oh yeah, when I see updates now I catch myself looking for shop-cat. |
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
Down the shop picking away this morning , I see a lot of builds that don't get finished , shame but **** happens .
The girl friend is driving down so I will get back on it Monday , still have a the little pile of parts coming in thats holding me up but the stuff should be in next week . |
Re: 1990 GMC Suburban ... Cummins Powered
