Very nice truck, I love black! :metal: Have you ever thought of taking it back to the old school look of wheels? It would be a lot cheaper and look very kool. :smoke: Just a thought.

Polished slots do look good on a black truck :metal:

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
I really like the cragar ss wheel on a black truck to.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Ill be going with 20s. I already bought my tires. I really like the old school look too though, i even thought about a drop with the hubcaps like Rene's Gumby truck (?) But i do like the vintage look too. I cant bust this one apart, at least till my 69 is finished... so i need to keep that patina'd vintage hot rod feel.

Wow .. I like those. Never seen them (?) Are they new?
Still undecided :D Jonathan (VA72C10) came by the house last night and hung out for a while checking out the GMC. My BB truck is up at my dad's house about 45 min away so he couldn't see that one .. but maybe next time. We went to dinner with the family, fun night out in the big city of Cleveland TN. I got quite a bit finished up on the ole GMC this weekend. The paint is coming up really good. Pics below .. :metal: 1) The peel I'm working with (uugh), 2) door vs. finished bedside, 3) finished bedside closeup, (4) and 1500 pass on the door. I'm still going over the door again with 2000. It really helps with the final buff to compound 2000 scratches rather than 1500. I have all emblems, door handle, key / lock, mirror, etc... All off so I can get a clean buff on it. I'm by no means a pro at this but for old, dead, black single stage I'm pretty stoked. |
Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
...Wait, .. How'd that last one get in there?

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Talked to Mar-K today, I am working on a complete wood bed changeover. Dad is going to work on (DA) my inner bed fenders this week .. maybe we can pull it apart in a couple weeks and get the crusty bedfloor out of there. I'm planning to media blast the inner bedsides and the inside of the tailgate. The inners are nice original paint so I don't think they need blasted. They are really good West Coast GM, New front bedpanel, Epoxy and Base / Clear in Deltron Tuxedo Black. Stainless bolts, strips, etc.
Should be pretty cool. |
Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Looking really good man, that's gotta be hurting the wrist and hands by now.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Much appreciated buddy .. ! Yes, I have had to take it in sections, just taking my time to do the best I can with it.
That Photoshop is closer to 22" I think .. :D I'm working on another one with Polished Coys. |

Obvious Photoshop .. but looks pretty cool :D

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Most people say to get the chrome Coys, since the finish isn't that great on the polished version.
I still think it would look good with Torq Thrust II's or grey Coys. |
Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
The more I wipe around on it, the more I'm thinking a polished wheel of some sort would fit the look of the truck .. but grey is still my personal favorite. Maybe Grey TT2's ?
|
Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
grey Coys or a salt flat style wheel. Those two styles have been my personal favorites for these trucks. Grey TT2's would look good.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
After seeing this gem of a truck in person, I think a polished wheel will fit it best. The black paint is coming out very nicely. And the trim has enough of a sheen to fit a polished wheel but not chrome) I think the polished coys would be perfect as we discussed since I mentioned the finish isn't very bright compared to polished billet....so the polish of the rims would fit the polish of the trim and it would look like the wheels fit the overall look of the truck....
If you're going with the lighter woodgrain I don't think a gray color wheel will look as good and might clash with the sandalwood color on the interior. Not that you see a lot of the interior when looking at the truck.... One other option is the wheel gringoloco used on his truck...it has the annoying brand name into one of the spokes but he took care of that and you and your dad could too...then they could be painted any color tone you wanted...... But my humble opinion is a polished coy would be a reasonably priced wheel and really fit the look of the truck! |
Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Looking a little closer, the lighter woodgain is definately a sticker covering the normal woodgrain .. could it have saved the normal woodgrain from fading over the years?
the only place I don't see the normal woodgrain (darker underneath) is the tailgate band. Can you buy the replacement woodgrain for the tailgate band? .. I like the darker wood trim too and pulling the lighter off would really clean up the crusty / flaking off lighter trim. .. Just a thought. I think all the side trim is the darker (rosewood) color underneath. Will get pics later. |

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Although I do like the lighter color woodgrain on your truck (and your dad does too ;))....wonder if you could find some new material like that to use on the trim, band, and upper part of your door panels...
|
Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Yep, I like the lighter woodgrain in the trim. It's different, and that color on a black truck really pops. And, I agree with Jonathan on the polished (not chrome) Coys. Now that the shine is coming back on the trim, they would look great. After all, it is a Sierra Grande! It should be "chromed" out... even for a daily driver.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Working on the color sanding still .. ugh. Taking forever. I did the initial cut on the hood last night with 1500. It is coming out, but just taking my time and keeping it as flat as possible. It has a lot of junk in the paint across the top sections so I have to rinse the paper about every 2-3 seconds it seems. But, it's definitely getting slick.
When I buffed the bedside I pulled the SG emblem off, so that has been cleaned and detailed. I just need to get some weatherstrip adhesive and put it back on. I replaced the chrome trim around both taillights, it looks a lot better. Dad is working on my new inner bed fenders today. They are super nice GM I got from Krazy Ray. Will post pics asap. They are in Primer / 220 stage right now. Pics coming soon .. |

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
After reading through your thread, I'm going to force myself to be patient with my color sanding. Can't believe how good your finished product is coming out. I'm a believer in the sanding buffing waxing approach. Great inspiration, and great project. Keep up the great work!

Spent a majority of the weekend finishing up buffing my old GMC. Thought I'd post some pics...
:metal: I'm pretty happy how it turned out. There are still some spots that might need some attention but, overall it looks a whole lot better. |

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
I'll get it put back together in the next few days. Hood latch is off (so I could get the hood letters off) .. emblems, door handle, lock, etc. just stuff I took off so I could get a real clean buff without having to work around it.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Simply beautiful.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Dang... that turned out great! I can't believe the difference. It looks like a new paint job (or better).

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop
Thanks guys, .. The paint is old, it's still got nicks in it here and there and stuff I just couldn't get out without adding some 'patina' .. But from 10ft away it will look like it has been painted recently.. Much better than old oxidized orange peel.
I think my finger prints are gone. From the way it looks right now, It will be dropped and I'll have my wheels around mid May. I'm piecing the wood bed together now. I have located some white oak, and FREE bed strips for it. .. I haven't forgotten about my 68 btw. More to come there too. |
