Wow.........

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
Doesn't seem too impressive, but I rebuilt the trans and carrier bearing crossmembers today to accommodate for the exhaust. The trans was fairly straightforward since I had built it to bolt in...the carrier bearing one on the other hand, was welded in place and I had to do the deed on my belly between the cab and the frame. Now I'm a contortionist as well. I got both headers modified to fit above the bottom of the frame and took measurements for the exhaust pipe that I'll pick up tomorrow. I'm getting a lot closer to being ready for paint on the frame. I feel like I've almost rounded the corner from taking apart, to putting together...

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
Question for anyone that has done a Z'd front end...when dropping the front horns, do most people box the frame in that area? Seems like a bad idea in case of a front end collision, but I'm wondering what the standard is. I can't seem to find any conclusive answer. All of the pics of other builds are from the outside and don't show the inner part of the rail.
|
Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
Inner frame doesn't need to be boxed. Just box in behind the z to reinforce it. I have seen people box it in and run a bar between bother horns. But it's not needed.

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
I boxed mine and ran a crossmember. My would flex when I would use them to get up and I figured it couldnt hurt.

Go man!

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
I didn't have a problem with the radiator. My front horns ended up a bit high though. If you have the time I'd mock it up to be sure.
If you do the crossmember make sure you can still use your engine hoist as it will get in the way. |
Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
A little Easter egg for those that look close enough...

Now that's bringing a fish plate to a whole new level!

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
What are you guys using to get this black **** off of the firewall? I've tried lacquer thinner, mineral spirits, carb cleaner, multi solvent...wire brush, flap disc. Nothing is doing very well. I've ruined a flap disc now...wtf is this ****?

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
A little bit of heat and a scraper usually works pretty good
|
Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
Oo good one. I normally use a scraper but ill be adding heat for sure.

Oh, I'm stealing that! Too slick!

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
It's nice to be actually putting this thing back together instead of taking it apart...I think I've finally hit the top of the hill.
I have the body mounted back on the frame, engine and trans permanently installed, headers and resonator pipes in, most of my fuel and brake lines run, wiring to the rear, and I'm buttoning up all of the connections to the engine. I had to lengthen some of my harness and shorten other parts because of the Z. The power steering pump turned out to have a different fitting for the pressure line, but I was fortunate enough to have a really helpful guy at the parts store and I ended up cutting the old flare off and flaring the end to match the pump. I painted the firewall and I've been working on looming everything...which has been incredibly time consuming! Anyway here's some pics of progress: Old fitting: http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...87DA09991C.jpg Everything in place and attached: http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...AD42B0A83D.jpg My wiring mess! http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...F4B0DC3ED3.jpg |

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
40gal burb tank is out of the burb...that was a chilly adventure. It's a little bigger than I'd expected, and it doesn't fit between the rails, rather right on top of them, so I'll have to build some kind of framework to house it...I can also see that my bed floor is going to be raised waaaay up to cover it.

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
Geez...I could sure use a brake and a slip roller. This is hard on the elbows.

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
Maybe I should look into this Instagram thing. Keep on keepin on.

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
So...photobucket is apparently all screwed up again which has resulted in some broken links. I don't feel like going through the entire thread to figure out which pics are missing right now, but if anyone comes across one that's not working and really wants to see it, let me know.
Here's the broken one from above: http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...780E267D_1.jpg And here's my current progress on the plenum. I'm a little out of practice with aluminum tig'ing and my machine keeps popping the breaker. Just when I've got my rhythm back, it pops! I'm going to grab a bigger breaker tomorrow and see if I can finish this up. I moved the blower motor 5" up and deleted the AC. I've had some interest in this on Instagram. If anyone else is interested in something like this, let me know. I'm trying to gauge whether or not it's enough to knock out a few of them...http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...7024FFB860.jpg |
Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
Make sure on the photobucket deal that you don't rearrange any photos in your photobucket account. I had that problem a while ago when I was trying to reorganize my photobucket and put different photos in certain folders. If you move them around or put them in a folder the links will change.
Dunno if this is your issue but in case anyone else doesn't know. |

Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project

photobucket has been giving me issues for awhile now. i used imageshack for like 6 years but then they changed everything, required payment, then all my pics went dead. so i switched to photobucket and havent been very pleased about it |
Re: My 83' Crew Cab Dually project
Had to take a break to clean the shop today. Small space gets out of control quickly. I was nearing gridlock. When I can't find tools, it's time...now I have no excuses not to get things finished. Lol
