Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Cleaned up the spacers on lunch yesterday and got the ring for the bearing retainer turned down to the right diameter. Fit it up when I got home and it all fit :metal:
The motor and tranny came with another bearing retainer that was in bad shape and I wasn't going to use. I bolted the ring to the retainer and put the snout in the lathe. Worked great! https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7308/2...fdef68a4_b.jpg Test fit everything just to make sure it all fit. https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7442/2...b90dc9b2_b.jpg https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7342/2...69ddc4fd_b.jpg Also, my buddy needed a new coolant bypass plug made so I played around and made this. Turned out killer! https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7084/2...677d376b_b.jpg Tonight, I'm going to help my buddy with the brakes on his truck so he can hit up a track night on Friday. I'll see about stabbing the tranny back in my truck Friday night or Saturday. |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Nice work Scott, you'll be an expert at removing and installing tranny's by the time you're done
|
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
A few more times of installing and removing the tranny and I have a setup that works! The spacer worked perfect and all the parts worked together like they were supposed to. So happy to be able to move on and re-start the assembly process!
Between tinkering on the truck this weekend, I had a little "Scoot time" and walked down to the park for the Hot Air Balloon Festival Saturday night and did some rock therapy in the Jeep on Sunday. It was a great weekend! There were supposed to be 8 or so balloons all lit up but I guess there was too much wind so only one was brave enough. It was pretty cool to see the process to get it all setup and ready to fly though. https://c6.staticflickr.com/8/7431/2...f926e3d4_b.jpg This is what my Jeep is built for, it still blows my mind on how capable it is for in my mind a fairly stock looking rig. Yes, I do enjoy my toys :metal: https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7691/2...7d42d0e1_b.jpg A little paint transfer from a tree that someone else rubbed against. The Jeep is almost strictly a wheeler so I don't worry about the body so much  https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7578/2...398d248c_b.jpg I painted the bed strips body color a while back and last night rounded up all the strip hardware and gave them a coat of body color also. I think it'll look good and finish off the bed a bit. https://c6.staticflickr.com/8/7326/2...f90aacb8_b.jpg More to come this week. If everything goes right, I should have the bed back on the truck and the driveline sent out to get shortened due to my spacer. |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Tinkered with it last night, I gotta say that messing with the tranny for so long killed the motivation levels a bit. I wasn't sure what I would need to do to the tranny crossmember to get it bolted back up and all it needed was opening the holes on the frame attachment side. Easy!
The shifter was a bit of a reach into 3rd and 5th was way out there so I cut a couple slices at the base of the lever and pulled it over to close the slices. Worked well and is much much better! 1st gear https://c7.staticflickr.com/8/7536/2...b0c5acc6_b.jpg 5th gear. It's about where 3rd used to be, can't get much better than that! https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7371/2...bcf9e148_b.jpg Here you can see the bend that I put in it https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7356/2...9821bd6e_b.jpg And just because the chrome looked out of place, I painted it black. It should look way better now! https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7388/2...1eff49bf_b.jpg Here's a shot of what the bed will look like. I painted the strips and the hardware body color with a semi-gloss sealer on the oak. It's going to look great. https://c7.staticflickr.com/8/7216/2...726e71c7_b.jpg |

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Got the bed on the truck this weekend and my buddy started fixing the bad fender. He will also be shooting them for me, I can't wait to see them on the truck!
The front panel was pretty messed up and wouldn't allow me to put the bed wood in. No matter what I tried, it just wasn't going to be fixed while it was still bolted to the bed so I took it off and actually lightly stomped it flat. Worked great! https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7417/2...9e0708e1_b.jpg I didn't get an after shot since the wood fit. I started putting the wood in and then my dad and friend stopped by so we put the bed on the truck. Progress! https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7381/2...22d2da85_b.jpg Just for fun, we held a fender up :metal: https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7397/2...5978a689_b.jpg My buddy was working on my passenger fender on Sunday, the rust was so bad that he used the whole patch panel. I learned a bunch watching him work and even though we have never done this before, it's turning out great. https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7369/2...dfb3c10c_b.jpg https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7306/2...93872e82_b.jpg https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7319/2...60da1aab_b.jpg |

The bed is back on and the wood is all tight. Dad helped me get the front clip in the garage so I can start cleaning that up and repainted. It'd be cool to put that back on next weekend!

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Starting to look like a truck again!

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Great work on the fender and everything else I read, (getting caught back up).
Should move along with the 5 speed at a quick clip. |

Well, the plan was to clean the inner fenders and core support up and paint it. Not pull it all apart . I'll be able to get a better job done now so it's worth it! I'll more than likely do a little rust repair before I put it all back together, just some minor things. Under the battery looked amazing which was awesome to see!

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Looking good! Making great progress. :chevy:

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Got a bunch done on the front clip this weekend! My buddy finished up the other fender and even found time on Saturday to shoot both of them for me. I wasn't expecting that! When I got home from his house, I tore into the inner fenders and started the rust repair. It took a while but I got both done between Saturday afternoon and yesterday. Squirted some paint on them and the core support last night and maybe get to installing them tonight if the weather holds out. I'm also hoping to get it into the exhaust shop on Saturday as well. It's coming right along!
52 years of dirt and rust in here https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8416/2...e3791147_b.jpg Patch all welded and sanded smooth, didn't take too much filler on this one https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8569/2...d0e8616e_b.jpg Paint! We have our work cut out for us to make the truck look as good as it can to match the fenders as much as possible before we degrade the finish of the fenders to match the rest of the truck  https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8612/2...8607bfe2_b.jpg https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8718/2...5cd44c1b_b.jpg Driver inner fender had a bunch of rust [url=https://flic.kr/p/KfDz2V]https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8791/2...d9de332f_b.jpg Patch all welded in https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8726/2...34c5a769_b.jpg I also had to rebuild the braces for both sides as well. They aren't perfect but nobody will see them so they are perfect for the truck! https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8703/2...99b65867_b.jpg Passenger side had some as well, it went a little quicker than the driver's side because I had a plan and jumped right in https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8721/2...03e1be67_b.jpg Patch all welded in and primed https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7601/2...429ec791_b.jpg Just for fun, I set the core support on the frame to check a couple things. Fresh paint makes everything look great! https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8738/2...d1aeb873_b.jpg That's all I've got for now. |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Making some good progress Scott. power through the rust repair, you'll be glad when you're done

It was supposed to rain all day yesterday but it didn't rain a drop so I got busy getting the front clip put back together when I got home last night. Sent a picture to my buddy and he came by to buff some of the paint out and to start getting the new fenders to match the truck. I'm so ecstatic on how this is turning out, just a little time with the buffer and the paint will look amazing again! Inner fenders are on, I had to trim the driver's side a bit to clear my new steering shaft for the rack so there was a bit of on and off cycles but it wasn't terrible. https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8673/2...a20398ca_b.jpg Next was the core support, went on nice and easy https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8419/2...e15ffae0_b.jpg My buddy stopped by to start making the fenders match the truck and got the passenger side of the cab buffed out. I'm getting excited to drive this thing again! https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8108/2...230f67a6_b.jpg https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8896/2...3cc97f0e_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8596/2...203e2778_b.jpg The fenders are a bit cloudy so we're going to let the paint cure for a while longer and see if we can get the color to match a bit better. Not a horrible match in my opinion though! https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8832/2...f872f430_b.jpg Going to call and set the exhaust appointment up today for hopefully Saturday. I gotta get a couple things ready before hand but I can do it! |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
It'll go in for exhaust on Saturday, I'm going to do 2" with a quiet muffler and dump in front of the driver rear tire. Can't wait! :metal:

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Woo, a new page!

Tomorrow I will tackle the wire harness to the alternator sorted out and the tranny filled again. I feel way too excited to drag it to the exhaust shop on saturday! |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Last night I made a little bracket for the choke cable and the throttle return spring. I'm not super excited about how it came out but it hides under the air cleaner so it's ok . I also wired the 3 wire alternator, super easy, and had to test my work by firing it up. Started up pretty easy for sitting for a couple months, can't wait to take it to get exhaust on Saturday!

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
It's always nice when you getting close. Small things don't seem so big anymore. What was you reason for using the inline 6 vs a small v8 ? It will be ashame to make those nice shinney fenders look old .

The truck is pretty rough paint-wise and putting shiny fenders on really made them stand out. They aren't perfect but neither is the rest of the truck so they are perfect for the truck :chevy: |

It's been a full day of buffing, painting, bolting and replacing! The passenger side of the bed is all buffed and installed, the grille and headlight bezels are painted white, the taillights are installed, I removed a bunch of black paint on the drivers rear fender and buffed it and dad swapped the headlight switch out for the new one. I also took dad on a ride through the neighborhood! I think I have a syncro going out in the tranny, it won't downshift from 3rd to 2nd without going through 1st, but all in all I'm very happy with the weekend progress!

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
More progress last night! A buddy came over and acted as helper/comedian/BS expert last night. I knocked out a bunch of things including tightening and aligning the fenders, adding the hood latch and filler pieces, installing the grille, getting the headlights to work and getting the brake lights to work. It's one step closer to assaulting the streets!
I had to make a little riser/filler piece for the radiator clamp to hold correctly. It finished off the top of the radiator and works to hold the radiator nice and secure. https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8279/2...cf41e71c_b.jpg After a trip to the auto parts store for more panel shims, we bolted the grille on. I'm so ecstatic on how this thing is coming together! I have a letter kit for the grille but I don't trust myself enough to put them in proper so I'll probably have another friend help me there. https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8820/2...ea2bb9df_b.jpg https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8768/2...b341b56f_b.jpg Getting the headlights to work was easy, I just needed a new dimmer switch. Also, getting the brake lights to work was easy too, the brake light switch needed to be replaced. I love the blue dot lights! https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7722/2...b6868547_b.jpg As you can tell, I still have some work to do on the bed and the hood but I'll be taking Friday off work so I can button up what I don't get done tomorrow night. Hoping to have it together early enough to cruise around town a little bit and hit up a weekly cruise in :metal: |

A little update. I've logged well over 100 miles on it since Friday and I gotta say that I am extremely pleased with the truck! The T5 is awesome, steering is amazing, brakes are phenomenal and the suspension exceeded my expectations! I did run out of gas this morning, I don't have a speedo or gas gauge so I gotta get one of those working but other than that it's had no problems! Here's a shot of it out of gas and one with the rescue vehicle :chevy:
|
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Good to hear its on the road. Great to see. You teased us so now you have to thro in some info abt the rescue truck aswell.

The rescue truck is my dad's 69 K20. He bought it a few months ago, I may be to blame , and it was a local airport crew truck. I think he's at 36,000 miles on it now. It's all original and an awesome pickup! https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8747/2...2ec66f55_b.jpg I've been having so much fun driving this old pickup! I really need to figure out the gas gauge but for now I'll just make a note to fill it up :chevy: https://c7.staticflickr.com/8/7766/2...6a151650_b.jpg |

Time for a little backwards travel through time to Friday. I started off at 8:30 with this list of things to get done throughout the day so I could make a cruise in that evening. https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8771/2...ea0cde45_b.jpg Things were getting crossed off one by one until I needed my buddy's help to get the hood on. He showed up a little after 11 and we knocked the hood out pretty quickly. I drilled through the hinges and hood so aligning them was super easy. It was so awesome seeing the hood on it finally :metal: https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8793/2...036d251a_b.jpg https://c6.staticflickr.com/9/8838/2...8f991b4f_b.jpg Next up were the bumpers. I got a little confused on the rear brackets but got them figured out. I also buffed each bumper before putting them on. They really turned out nice! https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8754/2...deb4daa6_b.jpg https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8889/2...73e0ff55_b.jpg A little after 3:30 and I had the list all done! I was hoping to get done a little earlier but hey, I got it done and made it to the cruise in! https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8034/2...775a03df_b.jpg Mine and dad's trucks, they got quite a bit of attention! https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8080/2...c30cda36_b.jpg https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8059/2...a040d792_b.jpg I still have some things to get done, mount the steps, finish the tailgate and then tie up a few loose ends but I'm super excited to put some miles on it! |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Nice job Scott, it's come a long way. I'd like to says it's almost done but you know how these projects work, they are never done!

Last night I had my first issue with it, I flipped the belt for the power steering pump. I know that the pulley isn't lined up perfect so I'm going to see how I can fix that without pulling the pulley farther off the shaft. I'm also going to see if I can get a shorter belt that will allow me to get some better tension on it. I'm pretty sure it came off when I opened it up to see what kind of speeds I could hit. Not triple digits but not too far off either. It won't go on a road course with the 6 but it was fun stretching its legs a bit :metal: https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7767/2...fc382661_b.jpg |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Just put a few bucks of gas in it every time you drive it Scott, then once in a while it will be full... I did that with my old Chevy when the gas gauge did not work!
