Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
The brakes on my C10 have been acting up, feeling like the master was holding pressure as the pedal would get harder as I drove. I went and adjusted the pushrod, but it didn't get better, so I figured there was something wrong with the master. I went to switch it with a known good master off my K10. When I took it off, I found this.
http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/...psn4upumhy.jpg Found another in the garage, swapped it and the master, bled the brakes and I think we're good to go. |
Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
Getting up to this point with the reassembly, the last part was to assemble the Steering tie rod ends and their adjustable sleeves and fit it all together with the idler arm etc.....
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psrcj2wmom.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psnd7jqed5.jpg So.......... When we tried to assemble these parts, it seems I was supplied with 4 Right handed threaded parts. So two screwed straight into the adjusting sleeves, and two refused, till we realised there should be two left hand threads. Martin and I also came up yo the house to call Paul "NevEno" in Ada, Oklahoma on FaceTime (Don't you love technology) to double check that we were right. Of course when we removed all the parts from the plastic bags, we did not note which parts and part numbers were associated. So its it like this....? http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pskx7ghh1h.jpg Or are they like this? It's the 350 and 370. L/R units I need to figure out. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pskx7ghh1h.jpg One more thing, the thickness of the tapered inserts on the tie rod ends differ, the two that fit the original truck steering parts are 15.5mm thick and those that are wrong threaded are also 16.5mm at max taper. So now need to figure out which parts I need to order, I think they are the inner tie rod ends with left hand thread and correct inserts. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pseyabghgw.jpg |
Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
Thanks to Aaron, I got to add the two frame to bar brackets for my new swaybar.
Now I just have to figure out how to mark the position of the control arm brackets... http://i.imgur.com/jOqUsTil.jpg Also started my custom grille project. Have to straighten this out a bit, but hopefully the finished product is worth the work! http://i.imgur.com/GM6aXbNl.jpg |

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
I did see that thread, but It doesn't have any reference for drilling the holes in the control arms.
He does state that the control arms would have the holes, but no, I don't have those holes. I'm guessing i'll probably have to line up the bracket into position, then use the other side under the arm so I can drill from the bottom side. I'll hopefully have it installed tomorrow after lunch. |
Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
Well, thanks to both Aaron and Grizz, I got my sway bar in.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
Craigaustin, Lugnutz, I got this from a local member. I believe the sway bars will all fit from 64-87 C20 2wd trucks. This bar is 1.25" thick.
The trickiest part was getting the control arm holes drilled. I placed the bushing and shell on the bar, and used the clamp from the other arm under the side I was marking, and made them line up. Then it was just a matter of drilling the holes. I used 3/8ths bit to make the hole, and some prevailing torque locknuts. So far so good! |

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
After bailing out early last night, I worked at the day job most of today.
So only got into the garage around 6pm. It was chilly down there. So I completed disassembling the rear end. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pszectm3cu.jpg Removed the springs and shocks. Followed by washing the shocks and chassis with petrol to get them clean and applying the Vactan rust converter to all surfaces. I then cleaned the springs with Cif and a Scotch pad. After which I washed them down. Hound my wash bucket had already frozen over with a 10mm thick plug. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psre1smjjd.jpg Once washed I brought the inane put them next to my study heater to dry and warm up. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pskhom8f1g.jpg At this point Nicola had not seen what I was up to as she was getting ready to go out with work friends (I prefer to stay at home) Then once she left....... The mouse got ready to play. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pshhcb8krm.jpg At -2'C outside, it just makes sense to paint indoors and deal with any objections tomorrow. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pszgsmg02k.jpg Hopefully I will get some time tomorrow to paint the chassis and axle. Little by little |

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
Second coat done.
Looks much better. Also the milk bottle painted and left outside in garage at 0'C looks great and is ever so slightly tacky. So I think drying time is delayed but still worth doing. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psltr5xq9n.jpg So last night I set up a couple of oil filled heaters that I will switch on 3 hrs before planning to go in there, hopefully they will break the chill so that I can at last get to the back half of the chassis and axle to paint them up as well. |

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
Made up new brake lines for the truck.
Well, after much faffing about and trying all sorts of ways (about 20 samples) to get this to work, the flares came together. The result left me happy for sure. This nut fits the master cylinder serving the rear brake line and was the only one I could not find a replacement for, fortunately it was in really good condition and could get reused. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pseookmutv.jpg Next up was threading the original through the chassis as a sample of the bends. The original pipe had a join around about at the rear of the cab. I chose to delete it, as Martin and I worked out that it must have been the option of the long and short Chevy bodies where the factory could screw on the rear half depending on what they built. I had to put a bend in it where it joins the flexi hose at the chassis to feed over the rear axle, at which point for some reason the pipes change to a 3/16" size from the 1/4" the rest of the system employs. No idea why the difference. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psqwnbd8x2.jpg Just finger tightened, this allowed me to bend the line to the various contours coming to the front. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psoa9nsigq.jpg Up front I used a straight joiner and a bend to join to the pipe that runs over the cross member or under the sump. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pspefg1rrp.jpg The other thing I did was to keep an extra 500mm to create a spiral once I do the front brake lines as well. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3rnxtwxy.jpg Tomorrow I will spend the day out with Nicola. Hope to finish the pipes over the weekend.] |
