Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

My original plan was/is to mount my caddy tail lights in the rear fenders, as far out board as possible.
Looking at how you boxed in yours to go outside the tail gate has me reconsidering my initial plans....
I know I am in trouble when the thought goes something like .... "If I were to do that, I think I would......."

And yes folks that is exactly how by build snowballed on me to the insanity we all see now.

Thanks for the ideas Dennis, I have never forgotten what you said about visiblity and why you are mounting them there.
Would sure like to see them both in now !! :metal:

Thanks Michael. I'm glad I didn't use those Mustang tail lights. I challenge myself all the time. That's why it's taking so long, besides not having the time. ;)

Those old 235's weren't known to get good mileage especially with a low geared 3 speed and a 411 diff. Great truck for around town though. :metal:

It's not usally in the dirt all the time. We do have paved roads around here. :lol:For about a month I keep up on the weed control when they first come out, then the rest of the year I have no weeds. Just minor touch up once in a while. :metal:

Thinking of fabin a new panel to fill the gap on the step side, and blend it in with the tail lights. What do you guys think?
http://belair.smugmug.com/Other/1965...958%202-XL.jpg

Scored BIG, and got the roll pan from my friend Mike that owned Sr Michaels for FREE. He lives near me now in Oak Hills. Lucky me he does louvers too, and still has his louver press. Hummmmmm?

I think the should curve (taper) in from the sides too. It looks too square from behind.
Just my humble opinion..

I think the filler panel looks good, & nice score on the roll pan! Can't beat free! What are you thinking about louvering?

Good point! I see what you're saying as well.

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

you could cut the bottom part of the rear of the fenders and move those back untill there equal with the rollpan than fill in the gaps again
kindah like the more modern stepsides

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

Thanks for the tips, guys. Looking from the rear I will taper it in towards the bottom so it doesn't end square. Looking at the side view continue that flat panel on the side of the tail light to the fender and all the way to the front to clean up the look. I'll cut more cardboard as a templet and show what I mean. It will also make it easer to clean rather squeezing a rag under the bed rail and the fender. It's hard to explain, but you'll see it when I make that cardboard templet. :metal:

watahyahknow 08-04-2013 11:42 AM

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

if you can find some extra bottom corners from a stepside fender and make those intoo the bumpercorners you only need to connect both corners (bumper to bottom of fender ) with straight steel sheetmetal under watever angle you want them to be

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

Go with louvers in the pan. Man that would be soooooooo koooooool! Don't forget to louver the hood too. That would rock.

Strodder 08-04-2013 11:55 AM

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

I have a plan for that. I cut some sheet metal panels out of a top half of a S-10 cab. We'll see. :uhmk:

Strodder 08-04-2013 11:59 AM

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

I'm thinking of louvering the hood, but the pan already has those cut outs in them. It would be too much.
These are the louvers I had on my 56 Chevy. All 120 of them, at $1.00 a louver. :metal:

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

Getting more done while the 57 Sedan Delivery is being painted. Shaped the rollpan, and made the side panels that will be bolted to the fenders.

http://belair.smugmug.com/Other/1965...resized-XL.jpg

Still kinda crude, but not finished. This is much more work than I expected. :uhmk:

http://belair.smugmug.com/Other/1965..._161706-XL.jpg

http://belair.smugmug.com/Other/1965..._161648-XL.jpg

BTW, I forgot to mention, I raised the fenders up 1/2" to make them flush with the bottom of the bed rail to get rid of that gap. It's hardly noticeable, but makes a big difference. Instead of making a small piece of sheet metal to fit that 1/2" gap, it will be filled with VW fender beading going around the fender.

This is what the fender gap to bed rail looked like before.
