LOL, I wish I could be bored. The wife is keeping me busy catching up around the house. So far I've painting soffits, wicker furniture, bed rooms and even fixed a oil leak on my sons cabrio. Boy the garage seems big when the vw is in it.

Dale, his looks like it has more orange, this wrap is a pure clean gold with a micro flake in it. The pic. doesnt represent the actual color well

I could tell yours was darker. But seemed to have some orange shade. But I will take your word if you say the pic doesnt represent it well.

Waiting for a sample of the matte gold to come in, may go with the flat look. Already have a sample of the brushed gold, but dont think that is the way i want to go

I have to remove shock mount to be able to flare tubing, gotta luv removing rivets! I think my mistake is using a pointy driver. Ill try and use a drift pin punch, and see if that drives it out better...2 hours spent on one rivet, and 1 hour cleaning out the truck bed

At least i have the fuel lines bent, kinda worried about that, didnt want it to look sloppy. Have to build a 1/4" standoff to clear some of the rivets that are in the way of placement of fuel and return lines. Also, i want to incorperate a clamp to secure my wiring harness on its way to the back

Re: PO has me PO'd

Jim,
Make sure the vinyl is specific for vehicle wraps and not just regular vinyl. The wrap vinyl makes it a lot easier to conform to the curves of a vehicle. I assume you are going with the 3M 1080 color series? I would also suggest using 3M primer94. it can be brushed on and you only need it in concave areas and complex contours. It will take several people to handle the sheets of vinyl most likely. I have actually thought about wrapping the panel truck and blazer to save funds for now. I am just now getting my feet wet doing vehicle wraps so I figure I better practice on my own.

Thanks for the tips Richard....first sample i got was the 3M 1080 series, thats the one on the fender, next sample coming is matte, and im not sure if it is the 1080 or not. Will have to look into that....you could always practice on mine, save me from learning

It really wasnt that hard, but, you lose the use of the back seat. Wouldnt trust the wood to support a seat. Plus, since no one else is doing it, it must not look that good!

Well, since the build is coming to an end....figured i would look at the rear drums.

Holy crap, batman, what a mess. This PO took care of nothing, so its time to start sources rear brake parts, and sandblast

I would trust it. I like the look of it, but my back floor is about the only thing solid on the truck.

Gone are the days of honing out the wheel cylinders, and buying the rebuild kit. At $9.49, its a no brainer....NAPA had all parts in stock except the adjuster kit, will be here on tues.

Wire brushed and coated with master series rust prevention
Thank goodness i didnt take the other side apart, i already forget how it goes back together. Service Manual isnt much help....oops, i was wrong, i had the wrong service manual. I was looking at the Van-Sportvan, instead of the 10-30 Truck manual

Ok, not sure of the color for the wrap, just got the sample of matte gold(looks more like gold leaf), wish i could find a sample of the original gold on the '68.Plus, the shinny gold seems to stick better, even without the primer....

Re: PO has me PO'd

Its hard to see the difference in the photo but i think you are right about the matte being more like gold leaf. I did not see a true matte in my color samples but you could also see if they can apply a matte laminate to the shiny gold. It would up your costs but it would protect the vinyl a bit better and it will make it easier to handle trying to install it (I think) I would ask the wrap guys their opinion on that. The only place I would reccomend using the primer is on concave curved areas such as the fender well arches and top side of the bed and doors that are concave. Any flat or convex areas should not need it. I have been told that even if you get it down good without using primer in these areaas that out in the sun it may loosen and lift away then once cold again it will contract and rip (worse case scenerio). Good luck with it.

Richard

Re: PO has me PO'd

Thanks for the advice Richard, didnt know you could add another laminate on top...just not happy with the matte finish, not trying to replicate the color of the anniversary exactly, but i would like to achieve a close proximinity to it, just to keep everyone guessing...

I may try to use the wifey on this part of the build, but sure if we could do it without a rip in the relationship:lol: we had quite an arguement over just trying to fly a kite down the shore. Well see...

Re: PO has me PO'd

Picked up some parts today, NAPA got the brake adjuster kits in, and i got the wiper delay from twoovakind, should be sweet to have a delay in a light rain.... My plan is to mount it opposite of speed warning knob on bezel, by the light switch. Then make a nut like the speed warning nut, then put my extra rubber knob on the pot, should look symetrcal......

I dont mind paying a little more to support the local businesses, there are times when i need a part on a saturday, and they have it in stock. That being said, rock auto does have a better selection of varying quality of the same part

Been reading your build for a long time now lots of great info and show of patience man you have a lot. I really like the wood bed and way you takled everything on your build. I like the gloss gold wrap looks good in the pictures the matte look on wraps doesnt seem to look as good to me. Good luck and keep pushing foreward almost there. lots of good info here i think i need to re read already

Thanks Colorado for the kind words, i have to admit, there are times when i feel like im talking to myself. But, when guys like you post up, i feel like its all worth the effort, since it takes away from my build time.....

It really is my therapy, calms me down after a hard day.

I should spend more time on each subject, but most of you guys know this stuff, and it is more directed to the young guys coming up into the hobby. I try to keep my comments short short and concise as yous guys only want look at pics:lol:

Thanks for the comments on the bed, glad someone other than dale and i like it....i am leaning towards the glossy gold, just seems to fit better

Thanks for watching

Thanks John, thats four, as i think richard was in on the gloss as well

Any updates on the paint work?

Re: PO has me PO'd

I also like the gloss, the gold pops better with the gloss . I have wood grain vinyl on my caprice station wagon, it has spent 20 yrs outside and only shows minor fading. This will probably hold up better than paint.

You make an excellant point, actually two...thanks for bringing that to my attention. 3M says it will only last 3 -6 years in direct sun, but you are right those woodgrains have been around for awhile

I'm going to the body shop Tomorrow, He said he got a lot done.
I'll get some pics.

richard2717 09-11-2013 09:38 PM

Re: PO has me PO'd

that 3-6 years is full time direct sunlight. i would assume you will still be garaging the blazer once done so it should last quite a bit longer if you need it to. the hood and tops of the fenders will be the quickest to fade because of the direct sunlight and the heat of the engine. To make it official instead of implied, yes i am more partial to the gloss

Thanks Richard for your official vote, the gloss seems to be in the lead....

Not much happening today, slept in, this old body needs rest, but the cardiologist said yesterday that my heart is in fine shape

Wanted to do something, sooooo, i bored out my speed warning knob to fit the pot. First bored a hole in pine to hold the knob from spinning, then bored the knob to 1/4". Now i just have to buy the 1/2" aluminum hexagon stock

It works, enough tension to turn the pot on and off

Thats good news John, cant wait to see pics

Ive zoomed back over your last 10 pages or so. It appears you dont have power steering on this yet? Have you done any research on a hose that goes from metric pump to sae steering box yet?

Looks like I'm about to toss a whole tbi motor in mine.

You probably have to go back further, my plans are to run a remote tank, and just a cover on the pump with AN fittings. IIRC, the tank has to be no more than 13" from pump, and bought the parts from PSI, OR somthing like that, ill look further if you need the name of the company

I bought the SS line made up, from the classifieds, think it was PICKUMUP....didnt have a problem, since they were sae to sae, what pump are you using that requires metric. Maybe mine is metric and didnt know it:smoke:

Cool deal on the tpi, lmk if you need parts....what ecu are you going to use?

Check out page 36, im going to have to make an index for this build

Dale99 09-27-2013 03:01 PM

Re: PO has me PO'd

I'm getting a motor from a 95 tahoe more then likely (if he doesnt sell it in the next week). I plan on running that pump as mine leaks anyway. Maybe its sae? But I figured it would be metric.

I'm doing tBi, not tPi. Using whatever ecm came in the tahoe.

I just need a motor that idles right, and doesnt need a tanker truck of oil to pace my side. It smokes 24/7 now :(

jaros44sr 09-27-2013 05:57 PM

Re: PO has me PO'd

You could be right, that new stuff is probably metric. Nice choice on the tBi

Re: PO has me PO'd

For those of you that dont have a blast cabinet, or you just cant hold on to small parts without blasting your glove (yeah, i know you could use pliers), apple cider vinegar does a masterful job of lifting the rust off of heavily rusted parts in about a day. If you cant wait, alittle scrubbing with a wire brush speeds it up a bit

Sorry, but i only had orange in high temp......trust me, these parts were heavily rusted
If you dont believe me, look at the pic in post 2098

Gotta wait for the wifey to run some errands so i can bake the parts in her oven
