I finally got my door hinges working and the doors to actually close without binding or hitting the door frame. yay :) Today I am going to put the latchs on the door frame and pray that the doors latch.

I have missed some of your posts too. Is this the same truck you had that extremely long thread on a while ago titled "rat rod it" or something similar.

Maybe you could start a new thread titled "Second try" and re the cash and where to hold it, maybe start another thread again titled "purchasing tips and tricks" and then just to be sure start up another one titled "How to find another truck if I can't get my first choice"...

Look, NOT to perpetuate this thing with Schrum but Dodger, you're being a ball buster. He's a kid and he's excited about owning an old truck and being able to chat with all of us about work he's doing. I thought about responding to the silly question about "where to hold my money" then realized its something silly I might have said when I was whatever age he is...17, 18...? Lets cut the kid some slack AND remember we were all enthusiastic kids once!

Yep, your right Dan, I was playing around. All in humour and I hope you take it that way shrum. I think your enthusiasm is great mate. No one gets more excited about old trucks than me and whatever little advice I may be able to give I will.

I'll say one thing, while some probably get a little frustrated with some of your comments, they keep reading your posts and I for one keep reading in the hope you get your truck!

Me - i'll always have a joke here in there, no harm intended.

Reason I asked where to put the Cash, is because what would be more pressuring ?.
I personally think the Professional thing to do is put it in my Wallet

If it was me I would have a shop put in the windshield! They are expensive when you break one LEARNING HOW! You can do the rest of them but you need to buy a manual, it would answer a lot of your questions and show how things go.

Thanks Indian, Now I'll think twice
The kid says it needs work around the edges, not sure on what that one meant..Can anyone find a photo of a Truck that needs work around the Windows ?

After what I've been through on my windshield install, I believe I could install one by myself if I had a normal truck to install one on! But would you even want to install the glass before paint?

I'll need to do some welding and putting on new Panels etc..Is the Steps on the bed bolted on or Welded ?

Denee007 05-07-2013 03:15 PM

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

I've never looked at the side steps to see how they are attached to the truck. Perhaps if you had room, you could remove the bed, put it on some stands and work on it at your leisure.

the steps are held on with bolts. Just take a look underneath the steps and you'll see the bolt heads, They attach upwards into the step side fenders

Almost 4 years ago, I started my "long term" 59 Apache project. It didn't get very far because I wasn't able to title the truck I'd bought. As of yesterday, the project is real again:metal: This time with a clear title and upgraded to BW.

Looks good Rick. What the short version of why you couldn't title it, then you could?

I'm working on my speaker hole repairs today. I got the passenger door patches welded in. One of the patches left two gaps I'll have to "bridge" somehow. Of course this had to be after I welded in the first patch successfully thereby eliminating my ability to get my arm in there with a copper backer! I may have to make something out of a long, flatten piece of copper pipe.

Oh, and due to me being an IDIOT! I realized after I'd welded in the patches that I forgot to turn on my gas! What a bonehead, huh? Learning, learning !

Thanks Daze, Denee, Dan and Schrum. Dan, I'm almost embarrassed to say. First truck was supposed to have a title, but PO couldn't find it at home and said he'd have to check his storage unit. I was dumb and trusted him, but he never produced. Then I discovered there was no VIN plate for me to even get a bonded title. Live and learn... I just bought the pictured truck yesterday. At least I've got two trucks worth of parts to work with!

Dan in Pasadena 05-09-2013 06:52 PM

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Ugh, that sucks. Oh well, you're looking on the bright side - always a good thing. Have you got any of those parts you're missing on the 1st truck? Those rear fenders, hood, any kind of drivetrain?

rgunlock 05-09-2013 07:04 PM

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

I've pretty much got all the body parts needed, and will end up with a bunch of extras. I'd already aquired and rebuilt most of the drivetrain other than engine. I've got a couple 350's, but not sure yet whether I'll rebuild one of those or go a different direction. Both trucks were pretty much stripped to a shell, but this one came with a guage cluster i might be able to restore, and an original seat frame with springs that might also be restored and upholstered. Still missing a lot of interior parts though.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

It started raining this afternoon so I had to shut down before I was totally done. But I managed to do final fitting/grinding on the passenger side speaker holes.
http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps6bac2a56.jpg
That's not a burn through on the upper left it's a burn mark of a bit of paint that was too close.

Threw some primer on it just to keep it from flash rusting until I get back to it tomorrow - I hope!
http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps9201f9e5.jpg

QUESTION:

Do most of you guys and girls weld all the spots in and then grind everything down smooth? Or do you put in a few tacks, grind, tack some more, etc?

I ground them all at the end and thought too much heat built up. In this case, I could NOT reach behind to hammer & dolly as I went.

I pretty much what you did then if there are any pin holes I fill them.

Looks good Dan :metal: real good for a first project of that type. The contoured panel isn't the easiest to start off with.

I would put some body filler, block sand and call it done

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

I got a 200r4 transmission that I am thinking about using for my 52. the best part is it is free. all I have to do is take it out.
I also rounded up my 20 some year old B&M Mega shifter that has never been used. I will have to buy a plastic indicator window for the overdrive trans and maybe a taller shroud so I can raise the shifter a bit. that is if I don't change my mind again:lol:

And my gave me some DOM tube and urethane spring bushings that will work good for my motor mounts.

Yup, that's pretty much my plan.

I agree I should have made my first repair something easier. Maybe the small rust-through where the toe board/kick panel/floor meet? I didn't because I thought the only way to do that right was to pull the front sheet metal - is that right?

I also have a buuunch of miscellaneous holes all over. What the hell was it with old trucks and drilling holes in them?!

I plan to do those with the copper backing - I've not tried that yet. Doesn't the weld stick to it AT ALL?

Installed my front fenders and there is good clearance to tires when I deflate the airbags, installed fender seals / welting, and inner fender wells. Next is the radiator support, driveshaft, cross bed sills, drill for electrical stub outs and measure for shocks. Gonna be a busy weekend.

De-flamed my fenders.

Black truck, red wheels, ugly green flames. Seriously, the pictures make them look good, but in person they were hideous.

A little water and block sanding and the fenders getting closer to repaint.

Thanks Daze57. I don't have to tell you how much fun that was. I didn't go far, but I did go. He's been down way to long. Had some loose fenders (all four) but I just had to take a short drive just to break the ice so to speak. On with the wrenching.

Which is EXACTLY why I'm doing a refurb while keeping it running because I know I'd likely crap out or let (many) other things get priority if I'd torn mine all the way down to the frame.

I DO plan on pulling the bed off this summer to wire wheel/blast everything behind the cab and paint it black. But I'm not going to allow that to have the truck non-working for more than 2 weeks max. (So I'm telling myself)
