I can install the compressor on the engine as it sits with the stock inners, but the pulley is *just* touching and the tensioner sits about a 1/4" too far outboard (below the compressor) to work with my engine location. I figured an inch would do me, that way I'll have 3/4" clearance and enough space to actually get a belt around the thing. I may bump it a little more than that, time will tell. |

Worked on the fuel fill today and made a little progress. The fuel fill 90 degree elbow worked really well. Here I made use of a couple feet of 2 inch tubing to determine where hole needs to be. The digital angle finder was pretty handy to make sure the pipe runs uphill from the tank fill. |

And the outer fill pipe is coming through about right here. Now to figure out where it needs to pass through the fender. Hmm...make a pattern of the fender, make a wire form buck of the fender...?...lots of complicated ideas.

Finally thought of a much simpler solution and made a copy of the fuel fill pipe, except with a card board tube for the end.
Install the fender, insert the tube, trimming the card board end of the tube until it just touched the fender. Marked the contact area on the inside of the fender, pulled fender back off, drilled hole with hole saw and reinstalled. |

When your floor and inner wheel well are sprayed with Lizard Skin it's a good idea to chase out the threads before bolting the fender on. Amazingly I did think of doing this before installing the fender.

Just a little shaving on the fender and inner fender holes and this fill pipe should be good. This will permit the fill to drop into the hole a little more. Thanks dwcsr...nice job.

Looks good (per usual) Doug.
is the plan to cut the filler tube at an angle so that the cap is close to the same angle as the fender? Marc |

Thank's Doug for the offer on the fender, Dad said he will use the one he picked up.
Sub's looking good. Mark... |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Great tip to chase threads after Lizard Skin being sprayed on.
I always do this, after paint and powdercoating. I would like the cap more to the fender also but I'm sure you will get that right ;) Fuelpipe itself looks great!! Not much space I see on those old cars  |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
nice filler job. again the small details that most people will never notice. but take hours and hours of thinking and building.

Thanks Mark, Kees and 99. I agree Kees and 99, the cap needs to be parallel and closer....and it takes time! Here is where I am heading. Still have to refabricate the fill pipe.

Very nice Doug...Jim

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Nice touch!! When you get the filler done it will look like the cap is glued to the fender. Ya I forgot to chase some of my holes after lizard skin acts like your cross threading.

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
That's the way I like it!
It's all in the small details ;) |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Awesome updates Doug, can't tell you how happy I am to see this one under way again. This is one of my favorite threads! As always your attention to detail is awesome, thanks for keeping me motivated.

Marc, Mongo, Jim, Lower, Kees and Richard thank you for your kind words. Really minor progress...though as we all tell each other ... progress is progress.
The fill tube dwcsr fabbed up would have been perfect if I could have placed it farther forward. In execution that idea didn't work and here we are. Now to connect pieces to fab up another fill that works here. Ordered two mandrel bent J pipes so I can whittle away at it. Probably Saturday. Headed to PRI in Indy tomorrow. |

Reconfigured the fill pipe to work with where I needed it to be by cutting apart what I had, then fabricating / cutting pieces to fit. Made it in three pieces and here are the first two going together.

Putting a bead on cross fill pipe for better retention and sealing in the connecting hose. Terrible picture, I know, as there is too much stuff in the back ground. Only picture of this I took.
