Speed bumps seems to always be there to make us hit those brakes. Glad you got it rolling/running again.

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Was going again... I've hit a wall, while adjusting the valves Thursday, all of a sudden the electrical system decided to go on vacation. Long story short, out of the blue, when the ignition switch is switched to the on position from off, the voltage at the ignition switch drops to 5 volts. Battery is good, but will take to work tomorrow to test. Starter, wiring, and ignition switch are all new. Battery is grounded to the motor, frame and engine are grounded to frame. Bed is grounded to frame as well. Help! Any ideas and suggestions are welcome...

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Don't let the new parts fool ya. I had a set of 2 week old Napa spark plug wires fool me and a bunch of local rodders. The "new" part makes you take it out of the equation.

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Ahhhh, ignition gremlins.
That was supposed to be my excuse!!!! LOL! This problem is the only thing stopping me from going to Clem's!!!! |
Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Something is shorted or grounding out that is only on when the ignition is on, disconnect one thing at a time until the voltage gets better.

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Thanx for the input guyz... Well today was productive and the stepper is once again Alive and kicking. :metal: Which had me grinning like a possum pooping peach seeds...:haha:
I replaced both battery cables and re-routed the ground cable to the frame... I then checkedthe voltage at the switch, full battery voltage when switched on!:bann: With the electrical system back in operation it was time to adjust the passenger side valves... that job done.... it was time for the Stepper's Maiden Voyage into town... :uhmk: The only hiccup was when I stopped at my work the water pump decided to pee coolant on the parking lot...:sumo: Back in 2012, shortly after getting the Stepper and engine, I bought a serpentine belt setup complete with Brackets, P/S pump, Alternator, A/C compressor and Water pump for $100... the P/S pump started leaking shortly after getting the engine running, but thanx to Lucas P/S stop leak, that leak has stopped. The Alternator was replaced after the new wiring harness was installed, and at that time the water pump was hanging in there still... So tomorrow after work a new water pump will be installed...;) Rian is supposed to be here Wednesday so I plan on driving the Stepper to work Wednesday... Later guyz... Pics comming soon! |

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Thanx Brotha!!!:mm:
Yes, Awesome to finally drive for more than a mile or so up and down a gravel road...:chevy: Today's a bit bittersweet for me... Wishing' I was waking up about 3 hours NW of here for Clem's bash, but Life stepped in and changed those plans...:sumo: Instead, I'll drive the Stepper about 20 wiles west and put it in a Car show a friend is involved with...:uhmk: Although not finished it will still be fun! :metal: Awhile back, MarkeB01 offered up some items, and I was fortunate enough to be the recipient of a few items...:flag: One of the items was a rear-view mirror that attaches to the roof, (I believe that was a 60-63 feature) so yesterday I installed that mirror. As you can see in this pic, the mirror originally in the Stepper when purchased was discolored on the face and distracting when using... Tape in place to mark and drill... https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5480/2...726dd5e1_c.jpgUntitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr Holes drilled and ready to mount... https://c6.staticflickr.com/6/5712/2...336e59b2_c.jpgUntitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr Mounted and you van see the Number plate taped in the back window... It has now been re-located to the proper location at the rear... Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
That's interesting Don. My truck has the roof mounted rearview mirror. As far as I can tell it came from the factory that way.
I love the pic of Rian in your truck. I myself would frame that picture. Bret |
Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
And I welded up the holes in my interior to use a newer style windshield mounted mirror...
|

Not sure I would frame that pic but truck looks good on its own. Was good to see Don and even nicer sitting in the truck. |
Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Thanx Bret and Mike, as for the mirror, the '60 has the roof mounted and I'm not sure what year they changed over to the windshield mounted... I've always liked the roof mounted, so that's the direction I chose...:mm: I may have to frame that pic... Wish our visit coulda been longer... Fun and entertaining nonetheless!!!:bann:
Unfortunately I was unable to make it to Clem's this year, but I did attend a Show about 20 miles west of home and enjoyed taking the Stepper and hanging around gearheadz all day...:metal: Here's a shot of the Stepper and I on the way to the show... https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5818/3...82a6ee9d_c.jpgUntitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr The Stepper resting... https://c7.staticflickr.com/6/5792/3...56f327af_c.jpgUntitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr My friend Tony's Rat 62 with a 63 cab on the left in the pic, He's seen in the following pic with the owner of the red '63... https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5542/3...92a588f4_c.jpgUntitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr The Red '63 in the following pics won the Truck class, well deserved. Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Glad to see the Stepper on the road. We missed you at Clems bro. Maybe next year.
|
Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Glad you got it on the road Don. I drove mine about 1/2 mile up the road Sunday after noon. Still a little bit to do but almost there. Your truck looks great
|
Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Such a bummer that you couldn't make Clem's after all that hard work, but I'm glad you were able to enjoy attending the other show. That red '63 looks nice, but I wonder how the engine ended up blue when everything else looks pretty original.
|
Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Bummer you couldn't make it to Clem's brotha. But hey, ya did yer best and have made some super progress. :metal:

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Thanx Guyz!!! Good to be driving and sorting out the issues that are deciding to arise...:sumo:
Did some trading over the past week and ended up with a set of CPP Rear lowering springs...:uhmk: https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5691/3...323c4f7e_c.jpgUntitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr Today I loaded up Jojo and took a ride into town to shoot a few pics of the Stepper at it's former home... The truck was originally purchased by the local school and worked for it's keep until 1978. Ironically, the years it was in school so was I... Shortly after starting my thread, I was perusing other threads and decided back then to shoot some pics of the stepper at the old bus shop once I had it on the road... ;) On to the pics... https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5671/3...75df99bf_c.jpgUntitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr https://c8.staticflickr.com/6/5557/2...ca04455f_c.jpgUntitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr JoJo waiting for more ride time...:metal: https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5448/3...a8291638_c.jpgUntitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr Still lotsa little things to address... Never-ending...:metal: Laterz... :burnout: |
Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Nice one Don.
Well done. |
Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Way to go Bro. and JoJo.
My stepper is getting way to much time on the lift with those many little and not so little things. |

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Yesterday I decided to install the lowering springs I traded for...:uhmk:
Quick and easy as compared to removing the originals...;) Here's a comparison shot of the '70 Chevelle springs I installed during the build process, and the CPP lowering set... https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8601/3...02714f19_c.jpgUntitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr ...and a comparison pic of the truck with the different springs... top is with the taller ones... https://c8.staticflickr.com/6/5443/3...7f395664_c.jpgUntitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr ...the Chevelle springs seemed a bit loose and the CPP springs seem a bit more stout... new Rear shocks are in the forecast...:chevy: That's all for this installment...:mm: |
Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
I like it. Looks level now.

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
The new rear drop looks good! Maybe bring the nose down just a hair now?

Hi Don that some build thread do like the trading idea works very well great believer of it :metal: Pete

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Like the stance. Is the ride quality the same or is it stiffer?

I did find a bag of rubber stops I'd ordered through Brother's a few years ago... Found some stops for the Gas door I added as well as new Hood bumpers and Glove-box bumps...:metal: There are 2 flat stops and 4 larger stops that have defied my reasoning as to where they go...:banghead: Here's a pic, so if anyone has an idea, please reply... https://c8.staticflickr.com/6/5708/3...8278dabf_c.jpgUntitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr Started out today snapping this pic with a tea/coffee mug Rian brought me last year...;) https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5774/3...28a5750a_c.jpg by Donald Olivo, on Flickr Then I had to indulge in a chocolate/Caramel treat also courtesy of Rian from this year's trip...:bann: https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5445/3...daeeeb32_c.jpgUntitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr Enjoy the cooler weather guyz!!!:mm: |
Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Hey Bro.
Looks like you are enjoying a little Holy leisure today. Stepper's stance is looking good to me. I've been scrounging parts for the 62 and putting together some old digital camera equipment for use out in the shop. I'm not liking trying to use my phone for documenting my slow progress. |
Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...
Curly wurly, one of the 4 main food groups, right up there with coffee, tobacco and alcohol
Truck looks great levelled out :metal: I think the rubbers are the door stops that go in the small holes in the door jamb ?? |
