Ordererd weatherstripping and whiskers so I can finish up the doors. Found a great deal on the product, but oversize shipping killed me.

They just didn't look right without holes. But next tome I will drill the holes BEFORE I cut the parts out. Some days I get the cart ahead of the horse.

They replace these. the plate welded to the frame under the motor mount is to move the mount to the rear a couple inches.

i think i need to do that as well. do you have any more details on the plates you made?

Started painting the wheels today. Happy with the result although not sure with the one I've put back on the truck yet. Will post a pic when I yet them all done.

A white wall will make all the difference I think.

Hard to paint chrome wheels but lots of scuffing with a wire wheel, etch primer, surfacer primer x 3 coats and a top coat x 3.

Only a temp tidy up until I get new rims and white walls.

Found a slight coolant leak and it doesn't look like its from the radiator hoses. Explains why my coolant level has been dropping over time.

It maybe coming from the water pump but I'm not sure. I know little about these motors (or any for that matter) and I'm not sure how to positively I'd that the leak is from the water pump.

Will pull it out tomorrow and have a better look. Not too much to replace but would rather not spend if I don't have to.

Thought I'd replace the hoses anyway but they are a nightmare to find as well. Different ends going from the 50 radiator to the later SBC means different diameter ends.

Anyone have ideas on this?

Got one side of the painted wheels on today. Not sure about them yet. All a bit black with the tyres and rims together maybe. Will have to see if I get used to them. White walls may break it up nicely I think.

http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/...80/null-22.jpg

Pulled the water pump and whilst I can't tell absolutely if it is stuffed, there is a noise when I spin it and no resistance at all. There is no play in the bearings but at $100 I thought I'd be safe and throw a new one in. My pet hate is a hot running engine so I'll avoid that at all costs!

Old one:

Old and new parts:

Thermostat housing and thermostat are old and disgusting. Will replace them as well.

Flushed everything out and seems to be all clean. Back together tomorrow.

With the help of my close buddy leonard we Aligned the cab, front end, and bed.
Wet Sanded to 2K grit, buffed, polished and hand glazed roof, cab, dash, front end. OH MAN my arms are killing me.
Then moved onto mounting the front bumper. The truck is coming along nicely :)

Worked on the doors yesterday just wanted to share a little on a tool my brother recommended to buy and it work great. I have a harbour frieght stud gun and the stud pullers sucks big time, the wheel that holds the studs strips out very quickly after use. My right door was dropped by previous owner (look like a 2nd story drop) and the damage was extensive it buckled the bottom of door and pushed the outter skin up so much so that I was thinking of buying an outter skin and new lower panel. This got be thinking why not use my new tool and fix it so I cut the bottom of door which gave me access to inside skin and using a hammer and dolly I straighten the door as best I could. Then after straightening and welding the bottom I used the tool to finish the rest. I am sorry but I forgot to take pictures on outter stud work but I got pics of the bottom. If you need the tool just google it stud leveler I highly recommend it.

So cool! Would love to have an old aluminum camper to pull. You need some vintage folding chairs. You know, the plaid kind that make the backs of your legs look like waffles! :-). Great set up!

Marathon day in the garage. Ran into a couple as yet unsolved obstacles, but got a lot accomplished nonetheless.

Not the least of which was to get the frame laid down and start hangin' springs.

Aligned the drivers door. All is well except rear lower corner is up about 1/8". If i adjust it so that lines up the front pull in. It was always out before, I blamed it on bad hinges and latch. Now I think the door got tweaked.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Fought the door some more, it is a little better. Decided to wait until I hang the fenders and get the ws installed to see how that affects it. Almost acts like the upper window frame portion has been bent in a little, but I cannot see any sign of damage (metal wrinkles, etc.). Reminded myself I drove it 20 years and not to get to wound up about it. Also got the right belt for the AC so I can finish the adjustment bracket. Trying to tie up loose ends.

any tips on how to get everything aligned right so the motor mounts are in the right places, just a couple inches back? did you cut out a piece of the cross-member below the plate?

OrrieG 05-22-2013 02:05 PM

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Not reading the original post, I would say probably having the cab and radiator support in place. That will let you place it front to back so you do not hit the firewall (or know where to modify) and check radiator clearance. Side to side depends on header configuration and clearance to steering stuff. Up and down, upper clearance is usually not a problem except where the bellhousing hits the firewall/floorpan. Lower depends on pan location. Set the intake manifold carb mount level with the frame, that puts the engine/trans back down about 3-4 degrees.

The frame has alignment holes left over from original construction on the line. I think the rails were set in to a pinned jig, then the crossmembers placed and riveted. Frame shops use the same holes for straightening. Make sure your frame is square (they do move) then pick two points on each side (shackle rivet, body mount hole center, alignment hole) and use that for reference. I would use a block similar to yours to check before final welding.
