Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Not much today: gave away a set of wheel ramps in the garage to a friend, that helps clear up the space some and I had no use for those tools.
I bought a new can of NAPA Rust Treatment (love that stuff) and a puller to remove the wiper arms. Learned that yes, I must prime the oil in my engine before starting. |

After a few months of looking, I finally find a 72 drivers door in a swap meet. And it's damn near perfect!
No rust, all metal straight, only have to deal with the speaker hole. I might have overpaid a bit (Talked him down from the $200 marked to $150), but it's the correct year, damn near perfect, and I was tired of looking. Also tired of dealing with the sagging mangled door currently on the truck. |
Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Good going on the door. I would have bought it too! Best of luck to you, getting the speaker hole fixed and that thing onto your truck.
I had a big day. I removed the inner and outer grill as one, since I couldn't figure out how to get the inner grill away from the outer. Yes I removed all the little bitty screws, none broke, although one's head rounded off BUT I have Vise Grips and I was not afraid to use them! Since I couldn't get the inner grill off, I had to put every last one of my extensions together (20 inches! of them) to get room to rotate my ratchet. I knew buying up all those vintage 1/2 and 3/8 inch sets was a good idea! OMG, the amount of rust in that passenger outer fender! The fender held together but it is getting replaced. The driver's side is OK but needs some attention, I may go on and replace it too. http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/...psphdmvykk.jpg http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6u3vg7l6.jpg Driver's side fender rust (bottom) http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/...pskbauq3cf.jpg Passenger side fender rust (whole fender) http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/...psshyt0vtv.jpg My extensions (I am buying a 1 piece LONG extension next chance I get)...I needed this to get my over from the grill bracket bolts to the opening for the radiator in the core support http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1gispdem.jpg I had to call "tech support" in the form of a junkyard owner I know for advice on getting the grill off. Finally, I got the hood hinge bolts cleaned up (look brand new) and coated with NAPA Rust Treatment. I also started on another and larger electrolysis tank for the hood hinges and hood latch components. |

Had my bodyman over yesterday for another day of work. He shaped in the cab back (where I tied the new roof & cab together) and got it in primer. Trying to get the cab back together so I can get glass back in and sealed up to protect the original interior.

Adjusted carb, traced dual tank lines from tanks thought filters and switches to mechanical pump housing to carb. I found the return hose at mechanical pump had no clamps on it which allowed fuel to leak when I moved it a little. Hopefully this solves my problem of using 1/2 a tank to go 50 miles. If not, I'll be back at it next weekend.

I finally got all of my original gauges working in my 72 swb stepside! The a meter wasn't working, but I fixed it with a volt gauge conversion from tbone a while back. The temp gauge was the last one giving me fits. Turns out the temp sender was the wrong one. Never moved off cold. Installed sender and works like a charm. It wasn't cheap, but what cha gonna do?

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Got one of the angle strips cut off the bedside today. What a PITA that was. Spot welded on every 2-3 inches. Sawzall wasn't doing the job, so broke out the grinder and ground out the welds. Then bolted down a 4x8 sheet of 3/4" marine grade plywood for a temporary bed. Now my bed won't bounce around as a drive down the road.

Today was terrible. Mom got really sick and I nearly called in the ambulance. Suffice to say, I didn't get much done. I did however, after she was better, get the last of the hood hinge boots rust treated (NAPA) and the new 50 gallon electrolysis tank finished. I hope to try it out in 2 days, once the weather clears.

Working in Junk Yards , Used Car Lots and the lower Tier Service Stations gives one a whole 'nother perspective on things  .
I remember in 1972 looking at an old Dodge ambulance (1950's M37) that had the engine painted then started up whilst still wet ~ the paint dried in little flags blown back wards by the fans prop wash . Helluva thing . They too painted the spark plugs , wires , carby etc. . -Nate Quote:

Finally got rid of my rubber fuel line, replaced it with stainless steel and added a regulator and inline gauge. Also finally replaced the parking brake cables and spider gears.

Cab Doors
Is there a difference between '67 ~ '72 doors ? .
I see lots of un rusted ones with HUGE speaker holes poorly cut and 75 holes for various mirrors in the Junk Yard all the time .... |

Towed her home from the paint jail after work yesterday woo hoo ! :chevy: .
Lots of work to do yet . |
Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Yesterday I pulled the front brakes down to the knuckles. I'll pick up one rotor, a pair of loaded calipers, and seals later today, clean and inspect bearings, pack, and put back together. I wish I could pull the front springs and replace with 4" lift, but need the truck for a job this week. I expect to do the springs and shocks this month

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
VWNate: your truck looks great! Glad you found your original hubcaps....are you going to have the blue and black colors added?
I found out my new electrolysis tank still has a leak :waah: but I have sprayed on some more rubberized coating. I also turned the grill bolts and lag screws on the wire wheel and have those "curing" with NAPA Rust Treatment. http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/...psqe87btz1.jpg |

Thanx ! .
It's been a real experience , I used to restore Imports in the 1970's , I simply no longer trust any painter sad to say . Anyways , here's his masking of one hub cap : Attachment 1411252 I hope it comes out better than the tail gate lettering did . I've been asking how you alls do this , I see many very well re painted . |

Nate, congrats on getting your truck back. That separation anxiety is a b!#ch!
It looks beautiful. |
Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
All I did truck-related yesterday was to spray a ton of "Flex Seal" (which doesn't work as advertised  ) into the bottom of the new electrolysis tank trying to patch that leak.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Still working on brake lights. I got the turn signal switch back in. Unfortuneately, I dinged the threads up pulling the wheel. I didn't strike the nut square and it turned and mushroomed the shaft. And the wheel still didn't come off. So I beat the crap out of it and need to re thread it. I ordered a new tail light socket because when I changed the bulked the whole thing came part. That should be here today.
I hit a deer with my step daughters car on Wednesday and bent the radiator and radiator mount, busted out the headlight assembly and pushed the fender back into the drivers side door. So tomorrow is work on PT Cruiser day. The freaking deer looked like it was doing a pirrouette right before I hit it. I was passing a uhaul van think it got sucked around by the wind off the truck. Pretty exciting. Posted via Mobile Device |
