A bit of fire wall massaging with a big hammer at the top for turbo clearance and had to cut a bit on drivers side to clear exhaust up pipe but not nearly as much as I thought. Welded up some holes that I'm not using any more as well. Added double layer of insulation to the fire wall and exhaust up pipes and turbo are wrapped. Closest place has 1/4" clearance with 3 layers of insulation plus the lizard skin on the inside, should be good.

I have had lots going on, so here we go. New exhaust pipes showed up, old motor had 3" new motor will have 4". All the 3" pipe I bought is for the intake pipes. Decided to make a new tail pipe out of the 6" dia 3/16" wall stainless pipe that the old one was made from. I made a tear drop tip. Took around 30hrs to make and the final cut took 45 min, had to go slow and help the blade go strait down.

Wow, impressive exhaust creation and sculpting….pure art.

Re: My 52 GMC Build
curious, do you plan some sort of heat shield over the exposed area of the pipe? I ask because I was burned badly by an exposed pipe-on a firetruck at work, but still. it's likely gonna get hot and you likely won't wanna babysit it till it cools off.
nice work on fabbing those pipe bends. |

Then onto cooling, new horizontal aluminum radiator that I modified to go vertical. It was off the shelf from Summit, they are both 4 core the new one is 6" longer and weighs 15lb less. The new fan is 2400cfm/17" and is 500cfm more and 1" bigger than the old one that worked ok. Had to trim the rad support a bit because the pullies are wider on this motor.

So it has taken a ton of time to figure out what wires I need and where they need to go. (I can't find the right pinout for the computer) I started with the entire engine bay from the truck the motor came out of, whittled it down to what is in the 3rd picture then made spaghetti in my truck. I finally have everything hooked up, so the computer seems to be working properly. After I get the motor started I'll take it back out and make it all neat.

Bit of a mish mash of stuff done. New lift pump and filter set up mounted in the rear same spot as the old setup. Then goes to my fuel cooler up to the motor and out through my regulated return system. I have 62psi without motor running, so I am perfect. Started my intake pipes, so far so good. I also got my new Dakota Digital gauges all working and set up, They are really nice to set up.

I could not find a power steering reservoir that would work for me, so I modified an old coolant overflow I had, turned out good. Got my heater core mounted and hooked up, fits in there really nice and doesn't block anything. There is a coolant bypass valve just inside. The 30A electric heater I ran for the past 8 years worked ok but we do our big road trip in the fall and I needed more heat sometimes.
Going to start the motor for the first time tomorrow!!!! Attachment 2251938 Attachment 2251939 Attachment 2251940 Attachment 2251941 Attachment 2251942 |

And it ALIVE!! First start was Saturday cranked about 6 seconds then fired. Had a few sensor related issues but I think they are figured out, had it running enough to get some heat in the motor and fill the transmission. Best part is I know I put the motor together right and the wiring is correct. It also sounds GREAT!! FYI don't use dryer vent hose if you plan to goose the throttle. I'll get a vid uploaded soon.

I'm defiantly stepping up my game on this motor swap, it's taking so much time. But it is really turning out good. Stainless intake pipes are done cleaned up how I want them and sanded.

Wiring is all cleaned up for the motor and under the dash, shortened the wires for the computer. I used the heat gun solder butt splices, they are like magic. Then wrapped it in cloth split loom and used fiber tape where needed.

The 4" exhaust is done and installed. I'm calling the down pipe my snowmobile exhaust because it looks like it should be on a snowmobile lol. Came out good can't wait to hear it. Had to squish it in a few spots to get some ground clearance and to clear the lower 4link bar. The exit is floating in the 6" tail pipe.

Re: My 52 GMC Build
you're right, the down pipe does look like a sled exhaust, haha. nise to see the flex joints too.
that is gonna be a tight underhood when done. gonna be good to see those pics with the fenders on etc. keep plugging away and the list will be done so you can drive it, and make a new list of tidy up stuff, like we all do. |
Re: My 52 GMC Build
Congrats on the first fire. It is always nice to check that big one off the lists.
Looking good... Marc |
