Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade

I have been receiving PMs asking if I will be selling the brackets.... I have no real answer yet. It will depend on a few key factors, mainly function and cost. I also have to think about liability. If I do sell anything, it will be a paper weight that happens to resemble a caliper bracket. It would not be welded. The cost will probably be high as I am paying retail pricing for materaials. The other cost would be to sign up as a vendor on here....

For now, lest just see how this all plays out.... While I appreciate all the support, until the truck is running and driving I will not be responding to PMs about selling brackets.

Thanks.

mine are not exactly the same, but i know they wont fit a 16.5 i tried with my rollers. i had to keep the calipers off to mount my rollers.
mine are 03-09 dodge brakes and have the same size rotor, slightly different caliper

I am very very interested in this upgrade. I would like to perform a similar upgrade but I would like it to fit in the factory 16" steel wheels. Any recommendations?

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade

I would try the later model chevy HD brakes. they are sized for 16" wheels

Rich, I saw in your "new to me 1972 K5" thread a couple of changes that you were making regarding the front hubs and possibly the caliper brackets. How are you doing with this?

I reread everything from the beginning & see you used 2009 Dodge rotors but I don't see what they come off of or should I say what there for? I also see you used a Dodge caliper but I don't see what's from. Can you please let me know what truck there from?
Thanks,
Jim

Jim,
My project is moving slowly and I'm not offering brackets till I'm sure everything works... When the truck is up an running I'll post here and my build thread...

The parts were 2009-2010 Dodge Ram 2500 / 3500 pickup rotors and calipers. They barely fit a 17" rim and I will eventually upgrade to some 18" aftermarket rims...

Rich, slow moving over here in Michigan, its warm enough to work outside now. Started axle dissasembly yesterday. As I thought new lockouts will be required. King pins are wasted. Rim question, I have set of 2005 17" Dodge Powerwagon wheels sitting on my garage floor. They are supposed to be a forged rim. I can get some measurements if needed?

If you go on Raybestos website and look various Dodge rotors for 3/4 and 1 tons, model years 2005-2009 there are (4) different rotors that cover this time period. The all have different diameters, thickness's and heights. This could allow you to move the caliper more inboard or outboard to help with wheel fitment.

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade

Does anybody know where to buy drilled rotors for a d60? What are peoples thoughts on drilled vs slotted vs drilled and slotted?

lowrollin70gmc 11-23-2013 05:23 PM

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade

I'm not a fan, as the drilled holes allow a place for cracks to start and I see it as more of a gimmick and form over function for street vehicles. Also, a D60 rotor has a lot of mass to absorb and dissipate heat. I would put a set of good pads (not sure if EBC makes them for a D60) on a set of stock rotors for better braking.

ryanroo 11-23-2013 06:12 PM

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade

the concept is sound. it allows the escape of gasses that build up under the pad from braking. thus allowing the pad better engagement of the rotor. but i dont have any side by side testing that proves it. i wouldnt be to scared of a crack starting in a round hole. if you get a rotor hot enough to crack, it probably wont matter much if it had holes or not. but i agree, i would start with performance pads if you can find them. i bet your options are pretty limited with oem stuff. you can get different hubs for a d60 and use wilwood rotors and calipers if you wanted but that would be a significant investment.

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade

When i was on rockauto looking at rotors they had a listing for drilled and slotted rotors, i have researched the cracking issues and what not and i decided stock rotors have worked more than okay so i went with stock and i believe ebc makes pads called yellowstuff as i saw it on a 60 build then i went to summit and asked them and they gave me a part # but it was over 100$ so i was like nope and went with the original pads

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade

I have installed several sets on various vehicles (no Dana fronts though) of owner provided drilled, slotted, drilled and slotted rotors, and I have to say the metallurgy of these aftermarket rotors are far inferior to what OE and even parts store quality.

ryanroo 11-24-2013 12:22 PM

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade

Jeremy, how do you quantify that? ive never noticed anything OEM that i would claim to be of great quality. i personally have nothing with aftermarket brakes, but i have ridden in a few vehicles before and after with EBC pads and one with the rotors. the cts we put the rotors and redstuff pads on isnt driven enough to have any longevity reports on the rotors. the yellowstuff pads make a significant improvement over parts store pads. i am interested in running the rotors and pads on my truck but i wouldnt want to spend the cash on bunk parts.

i have actually gone back and forth on using just the pads vs the rotors and pads. the slots and holes actually have a purpose, but for most street driving i dont think the pads would gas off much unless you are making repeated stops or slowing down from pretty high speeds. otherwise its just for looks. my reasoning for wanting better brakes was noticable fade in the brakes on a 03 dodge cummins truck driving in city freeway conditions. going fast but having to slow down frequently, i could smell the pads cooking and feel distinct fade. so, given a heavy truck with the power to accelerate and need to slow down aggressively the stock brakes were gassing off enough to fade. but, id hate to spend the money on parts of lower quality and higher cost.

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade

Ryan, what I should have said in reference to aftermarket was eBay "quality" aftermarket... EBC are schweet from what I hear, and when it comes to brakes, you get what you pay for.

Rich, any progress on the disc brake upgrade? I'm sure you've been busy with other stuff as well.

Re: D60 Front Brake Upgrade

Not yet. Had a bunch of rust repair done. Turned into a frame off resto-mod... Body work should be finished this week and Line-X next week. After that all the mechanicals will start going back together. I'm guessing January at the earliest...
