I haven't been out for about 3 years kinda took a break but hope to do some racing again this year. Was down to the Hat once before and liked the track, their LED lights not so much LOL, wasn't use to them.

Well if you are willing to go all the way to the Hat, may as well bring it to Saskatoon.

What dates are you planning to run in the Hat or Edmonton? If it works in my schedule I would like to take a trip to see your truck run. I'm thinking pretty hard about a 496 for my '81 shorty

Re: 496 to be DYNO'D!

We had planned to do a pre-wedding drag race competition in the Hat on June 28th for my brothers wedding... However, he has cancelled that as he wouldn't want something to go wrong etc and put a damper on his big day... Unfortunately that kinda works for me as I have been unable to take time off work to get the truck completed... It is driving me nuts, believe me..... I'd hate to pay someone to finish what I have started, but that may happen... Best case scenario I am looking at mid July....

Re: 496 to be DYNO'D!

what made you choose the afr 265's over the 305's? im in a debate right now with myself on which to choose, i have a similar setup 496 @ 10.2, cam not chosen yet, but shooting for around 238/238 @ 050 with around .600 lift. i was leaning toward the 305's til i seen this thread, you made some good numbers with the 265's.

Re: 496 to be DYNO'D!

Mark Jones, the builder at VortecPro, insists that the velocity of the air through the runners is the key. I told him what my plans for the truck were(85% street/15% track) , he told me what he would build for me. I'll easily run power brakes, and still be capable of decent track time... Which I can not wait to do!!!

Re: 496 to be DYNO'D!

ya definitely velocity is key. i just thought 265cc on a 496 would fall on its faces in the 5k range, but your dyno says otherwise, i think i will go with the 265's. did you do any port work on the heads or was it straight bolt on from the box?

Re: 496 to be DYNO'D!

Mark ported the heads. He says I can take it to 6500 if I so desire.

Re: 496 to be DYNO'D!

Any idea what cc they were when they left his shop?
I assume he kept the stock valve?
Any flow numbers?

Re: 496 to be DYNO'D!

Yes he did use the stock valves. I believe from his post that 270cc was what he ended up with. Here are the flow numbers Mark provided.

Flow @ 28 inches, 4.310 bore. .200 171 .300 233 .400 281 .500 317 .550 323. 270 CC runner.

Re: 496 to be DYNO'D!

Numbers are interesting. I would assume box stock the heads must have flowed less on his bench then AFR advertises? Even same pressure and bore, after the work, they show roughly 12cfm less on the average at every lift point except .200 where the show only 1cfm less.

Lift --- AFR --- Vortec
.200 - 172 --- 171
.300 - 245 --- 233
.400 - 295 --- 281
.500 - 326 --- 317
.550 - 335 --- 328

Regardless of what the flow bench says, your motor makes good power and can't wait to see you bring in a 10 second time slip.

Re: 496 to be DYNO'D!

i was going to say that same thing, the stock numbers show higher flow numbers, maybe its cause they are 80% cnc ported already?

Re: 496 to be DYNO'D!

Hopefully see the track in August. There will be no slicks this year in the budget, but I do hope to run some half decent times on the sportsman s/r's.
