Wanted to see how much a lightly resto-modded one would sell for.... |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Got a good amount done today. As mentioned, I got the rest of the items stripped out of the cab and firewall. Got the passenger door off, gutted the driver's door, took off the saddle tanks, and got some more grinding done. Well, mostly my BIL did...

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
very clean reminds me of my sanding the cab days! i have the same rinder it has done me and my dad good since 1999!

Although I will say my buddy has two dewalts he has had for like 6 years and uses basically daily. And he got them for like 50 each on clearance so they have been a good deal also... I used safety glasses, ear plugs and a mask. He opted for the science class goggles because he kept fogging his glasses too bad to see. And he just turned up the music loud enough to drown out the grinder. kids....when will they learn.... :D |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Oh, and on the schrapnel... I have pictures of that...on my first build. One wire cup was throwing them horribly. Was impaled by probably a hundred....had tiny dots all over my legs and several that went through my jeans and into my skin!!!

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

Notice I said...hopefully down the road....not even on my radar at the moment. After I finish and sell this truck I will be looking for a cheap DD (67-72 truck) to fix up and use around the house and will at the same time look for my next project...that will be whatever I can get for the least that will be worth the most when finished for the least amount of money....make sense? ;):chevy: |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
well Jonathan, looks like you are getting there, making good progress, keep pictures coming & keep on truckin'' :metal::cool:

http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5657.jpg got the inside of the door jamb super clean http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5658.jpg gonna have two big patches on the bottom of the window but it's ready now... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5661.jpg still working on the roof. Keep swapping between the two grinders to make sure I don't overheat either.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5660.jpg love this wire wheel....took out all the seam sealer in the drip rails and was great around the back window, inner door parts, and door jambs http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5664.jpg drip rail http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5663.jpg side drip rail http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5659.jpg Hope to make good progress tomorrow. Plan to finish the roof and driver's door sanding depending on time/activities.... |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Lookin good. Man that's a dirty job, but I guess somebody has to do it as they say! When you're done there send your brother in law over! I am dreading that. Keep up the great work.
|
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Definitely a dirty job. Going to get back out there in a bit....going to wait a little while in case any neighbors are sleeping in :D
|
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

Good work. |

2 hours to go ....how about the doors, fenders, hood(top and bottom), grill......if you can do all that in two hours you are amazing LLLOOOLLLLLL
|
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

and the 800 was just for the cab....it was actually 800-1000 was the estimate from two places and that didn't include hauling it there and back. And I mentioned earlier...I am getting the fenders and passenger door blasted before they get to me. Tkorinek had them done in AZ for 160...I couldn't have had them done that cheap here and I couldn't do as nice as job on the fenders as blasting could....I should have those in a week or two... The only thing I need to do still on the cab are a few spots on the inside, finish up spots on the driver's door and jamb, and of course the real fun....underneath. So I'll have probably 10 hours in it total but the estimates did go up to 1000 so they probably would have charged me that so I'm still standing besides the paying myself 100/hr because I wanna :D :lol::lol: And I'm NOT looking forward to the hood. I spent probably 4 hours on my blazer hood. I might break down and take that to the sandblaster....might be doing my frame anyways because I'm hoping to get some powdercoated front suspension parts. If I do, the frame's gotta be perfect :D |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
oh and I'm already 90% done on the driver's door :D
|
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Well, a good and bad day. Got some accomplished on the truck and got a tach/vac dash built to sell....
But as soon as I started on the roof I found a hole drilled...then another..and more...15 in total....come to find out most likely a PO installed roof mounted teardrop clearance lights at one point. Only 15 more holes to weld/grind :( Here are the pics as I was making the discovery http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5672.jpg  j/k It's not that bad....here are the holes.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5673.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5676.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5678.jpg |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
But by mid afternoon (when I had to stop to shower for a going away party for friends moving to AZ) I had the roof finished.....this made me
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5671.jpg  Looks good to me! http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5682.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5689.jpg |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Truck was a little dusty...
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5679.jpg I ended up using my leafblower after I finished up to blow all the dust away and off the truck and driveway. Got a start on the interior, finished up on the side of the firewall my brother in law was working on :D and then moved on to the other side of the firewall...still another probably half hour left there... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5688.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5686.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5684.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5685.jpg |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
I'm kind of happy I never sold my spare cab. I was only asking 200 for it with a title/vin plates. I'll save the pillar area with the vin plates and cut the rest of it up to use as patches for the four or five rust spots on the cab. Will also grab some floor flat sheetmetal to use for the lower door patch and possibly the bedside patch.
Probably will also be able to sell the header panel/windshield area of that spare cab for decent money as it's perfect. |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
looking really good! i'll have to get a wire brush like that for my drip rails. Can you turn your cab over to do the bottom? i'll be intrested to see how the bottom of your cab looks and if you have to do any rust repair...

The cab is pretty nice under but I will have to patch two of the cab supports (front two are really bad)The back two are really nice! I will be cleaning that to bare metal also and it will be primed/blocked/ and painted body color just like the rest of the cab. |

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Well, I was right. No time to work on the truck. But I might have lined up someone to sandblast the frame, underside of the cab, and the complete bed for a good price :D We'll see....I hope it works out because it will move forward the project and catch me back up to where I wanted to be.

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
This is sure to be an amazing truck once you're done. Great job so far!

I sold some parts today so I'll be getting a few more needed parts next week....and probably going to get the blasting done on the remaining parts. Have to get my hood added into that deal ;) Talking with Jason to see how soon I can get it over to his shop. and if he can get the painter lined up. If not, I'll be figuring that end out asap to have it lined up....this truck will NOT be in paint jail... :D I'll be doing everything up until the final spraying of sealer, color, and clear. |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Wow! Jonathan. You have been getting some serious work done on this truck. Keep it up...it looks GREAT :metal:
