Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Hey looks like your parts bin is almost ready for you to fire up the welder and start the metal surgery good luck and stick it out it will all be worth it and I would give that crapi a good inspection before you turn your loved ones loose in it , check those brake lines and all hoses real well since they can fail real easy when they get old no matter the miles

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Right on BBC72! I am going that way when funds are available. Some more pic's would be great! Packers05, I got the crapi/capri home last night, and yes have been driving-checking it out myself. Ran it today a few miles, and going to run 20 or so miles tommorrow. So far so good! Got my brake upgrade setup and looks like I need to change my valve covers, master cylinder will set out too far and hit my tall M/T valve covers. No problem, just need a set of stock-short covers, and also change my alternator brackets back to stock/setup. Really like the HAD products, and that is the way I need to go with this 8" lift!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Got my new inside heater box from Sharpie today! My old one had a ear broke off, was made of plastic, this one is metal-sweet! Between the two I can fab up a real nice one, cables and all!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Got a new set of "short" valve covers coming, and a new alternator bracket on the way, so new brake/booster setup should bolt right up! Merc capri is on the road, man cave is coming together, back to concentrating on th K5! Really looking at the HAD drivelines, anybody got some new pic's?

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Moving all the parts around in the basement for the remodel of the man-cave/family room! When I get it setup I'll post up some pic's of my pile of parts ready to go on this project. Got to think about winter setting in here, so better get going soon! Really looking at the HAD 1 ton driveshaft setups, but am looking at the heaviest yoke/u joint setup for these axles, any help, pic's, guy's? Looking for yoke/u-joint specs, etc. Thank's, Bryan!

Here is the pic of mine when i first bout it, has the flange in the pic. I will try to get a pic of it installed. It is a one ton rated CV and i believe they are 1410 joints, its beef believe me. You might want to go looking around diy4x.com They have a pinion gaurd I think it is called " The Guardsman" They have a ton of awesome stuff. Thats where i bought my disc brake brackets for my 14bolt and it was top notch. I plan on buying all my gussets and cage plates from them as well. |

Crappy pic but this is my Dshaft from Highangle Driveline in Cali w/DIY guardsman. I run 1410 at the 14bolt and 1350 CV w/flange at Tcase. Oh and when you buy pinion yokes make sure they are Ubolt style not straps. Ubolt type is way stronger for holding the ujoints tight. :mm::chevy::mm: Ya you are LONG over due for some pics buddy!! :uhmk: hehehe |
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Great info guy's! Already picked up the pinion guard, and I'm getting on the pic's, just have been really busy. Definetly going with the HAD shafts! Gotta get the axles installed so I'm sure with the measurements and such. Any help there? Thank's!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
after you get everything installed give Jess at HAD a call, he will get you fixed up. Just let him know what you are running and he will take care of you from there

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Got the new short valve covers and the alt brackets, need a set of v-cover gaskets and good to go there. Dad's got more Pontiac parts money coming next week, so should be able to order up the rest of my panels from Wes! Working on organizing all these parts to get some pic's, I've got a lot of stuff here ready to go on this project. Right now I am trying to find a "stock" aux battery box for my winch setup. I have seen a few listed here and there but haven't found a real good one yet. Any pic's of winch/battery/controls setups? I like Burt's setup, as he is basically running the same front bumper as I will be. Anybody working on a similar area?

Working on a list of parts so far. Did you guy's see the pic's of my new brake booster setup, I am so stoked over this swap!
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Nice booster! Nice everything!
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Looks good. Going to be really nice!
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
where did you get the brake booster setup?
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
From one of our fellow members/vendor Pickmup. Search and you will find! Excellant service, and a great looking setup! Got my short valve covers and alt brackets to do the swap allready so good to go. If running stock valve covers you should have enough clearance to bolt this system right up. I am running tall covers that made me kick my alternator out farther, causing it to be in the way of the longer brake setup. Not a problem now with the short covers and a stock alt bracket! Oh yah, gotta buy a shorter alt belt, probably time for a new one anyway's! Dad came through with some more Pontiac money, so am ordering up 2 more panels from Wes. More pic's soon!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Ordered up 2 more panels from Wes for the rocker boxes, only leaves the rear floor bed panel for now. After that, need some outer body panels. Really want the HAD shafts, but have to install the 1 ton axles soon for that. Getting closer every day! Any more pic's of HAD shaft setups?

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Thinking about fall setting in, probably gonna put K5 back in storage till spring. I didn't make a lot of progress this summer, but I did get it out and get it running. I also now know what all I need to do and what parts I need. I have collected a ton of stuff for this project and am close to having most of it to get started in the spring. Huge layoffs coming at my work, so moving carefully at the moment. Gonna work on the 1 ton axles this winter-prepping them for install. Gotta set up the 14 bolt with my rear disc kit, regear frt and back, etc. Looking for a stock set of driveshafts to make it mobile once the axles are in, just until I can afford the HAD shafts and thier driveline e-brake setup.

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Picking up a oil filter and 5 qts of oil to do a oil change on it before winter storage. Waiting on my last 2 rocker box panels from Wes. Should be here any day now, Still looking for more pic's-info on the HAD drivelines and etc? I am going with the HAD setup when the cash is available, so looking for advice?
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Not much progress but did get the oil change done this weekend.Still looking at driveshaft/yoke selection, need some help here.

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
I like the direction you are taking with the K5, will be one stout 4wheeler.
I'am throwing a dana 60 under my 71 K20 and was wondering where you got the top spring plates from? What are your plans for paint? |
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
I got the Dana60 front u-bolt top plates from WFO. $35.99 for the pair, plus the shipping. wfoconcepts.com check them out, they have a ton of great stuff. Got the rear 14 bolt top plates from DIY, at diy4x.com. Planning on staying with the black topper, close to same brown paint, interior and exterior, and going with the lower exterior in a black bedliner type of product. Also going with the bedliner setup on the floorboards. Not really looking for show quality but I want it to look nice and clean. I plan on using this K5 when it is finished, and won't shy away from that tree branch in the trail! Hey, thank's for asking!

Thank's, printed off the HAD order form and working on spec's! Definetly looks like the way to go!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Super progress in the bigger picture, parts accumulation takes time.
Another consideration for your front D60 might be a set of these: :D Loose the death wobble forever. http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/...maxx=75&maxy=0 http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/...es_p_1246.html |
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Thank's VT. I am definitly going with Ballistic's setup. I checked it out a while back when you suggested it, just lacking the funds right now. Also gonna go with the high steer setup at the same time. Got almost all the repair panels I need to restore the floors, rockers, etc . Been kind of a expensive summer, buying up parts, got some job complications coming in November. If I make it through that ok, next spring looks like go time on this build!
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Heard from Classic Heartbeat, panels shipped today! Just leaves the rear bed floor section to go. Shipping is a killer on that, so saving up funds!
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Fired K5 up again tonight, sounds real good. Gonna go check out storage barn this weekend, weather starting to turn here! Waiting on a couple of panels from Wes!
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Re-researching Ballistic Fabs Dana60 High Steer Arm Kit. Looks like the way to go here, they list the standard kit- with a long passenger and short driver arm. Also standard kit runs 3/4 ton TRE's. Sounds to me like the way to go here.Lists for $302.99 plus, but I think this is the way to go- eliminate the king pin springs. I know I will still need the steering tie rods and etc to go with it but looks like the way to go. Want the high steer setup also, anybody got advice?

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Got the 2 rocker box rear reinforcing panels from Wes today, look nice! Dad came through with some more Pontiac parts money today also, double bonus! Rear bed back panel to go..almost there with the underneath sheetmetal pieces! Next comes the crossover and high steer setup, and Had drivelines. Thinking about getting the wife and I both second jobs to raise funds!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Got the two rocker box rear panels from WES, they are nice! Just ordered up a new heater core also. Dad hit me with some more Pontiac parts money so here I go again! Getting ready for winter storage here, man I need my own pole barn for all my projects!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Thank's, VA72! More parts comming soon, working on getting the Ballistic/crossover/high steer steering setup.Need to sort thru a bunch of stuff, and free up some more cash soon!

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Got the nice heater box seal kit from LMC yesterday. Weather is turning quickly here, so need to get ready for inside winter storage again. Hope this to be my last winter without storage of my own here. I am getting ready to order up another bundle of parts from WES this next week though, and then start tearing into the 1 ton axles for the winter project!
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Well, I drove the K5 out to the storage barn under it's own power. The barn is 1 mile or so from my house. Wouldn't hardly pull itself down the road, but I got it there. Discovered the left front disc brake caliper is siezed up. Oh well, pulled the battery out and good for the winter. Not worried about the caliper, swapping in the dana60 anyway! I did send off payment to Wes for some more heater and misc parts today. Took some pic's with my 35mm of K5 in barn, will post when get developed.

Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Got my new to me windshield washer bottle/bracket combo from a member here today. Nice driver quality, I removed my original years ago for some reason, and don't remember what I did with it, so needed a replacement.
|
Re: My new build thread: Stage 4!
Fedex just dropped of my new heater core from WES! Next shipment should wrap up all my heater needs.
