For some reason my Transmission cover on the left side doesn't fit it right?
Where my gas pedal is now the transmission cover hits it.. It should be on the firewall? |

Mine is V8, six is different. here is fam linkage for six and edited photo. tran cover is probably from another truck.

Your distributor may have a worn shaft or the drive gear may be loose.

Is the distributor housing physically moving back and forth with the engine running at a constant speed, or moving when you accel/decel? Or is the timing mark bouncing around when you try and time it? I thought you had bought a new vacuum advance set up and replaced it?

It moves around when I start the truck up to the retarded timing area and it pops through the carb . I don't have a new Vacuum advance

It pops because the Distributor moves that way when I start the truck. I've never seen something like it before.. It wasn't doing this until I messed with the rotor cap and put the Dist Cap back on
If the distributor is worn out, is there a way I can get it rebuilt. It did fine until now |

I've thought of a reason why the truck doesn't idle well, possible intake leak? it has a new gasket but all things can be possible. If I can get it to idle when I figure out this distributor issue. ill squirt some starter fluid to see it it revs up

Ok the whole distributor is moving or just the cap? On the 6 cylinder distributor the vacuum advance is tighten down with a nut and screw is it tight? And is it leveled were the distributor is drop all the way down to into the motor? other than that maybe your cap is not on right is the tab on the cap lined up with slot on the distributor?

I'd take lowridder up on his offer and focus on changing the distributor and getting it running right before tackling the alternator. Didn't you get the generator rebuilt and get a new voltage regulator? Nothing wrong with the original generator system, I ran mine until 2000. Only reason GM changed was because cars were drawing higher amperage loads and alternators were better way to deal with it. Stock trucks without AC, etc. do fine with 36 amps....

I'm trying to figure out the best price for an Alternator brackets. I am going to change out the distributor for my back-up one that I have. Hopefully that will solve some of the current issues

Dude your physically moving distributor is prolly just needing the timing adjustment/clamp down bolt tightened. Happens just look on the side of the dizzy at the base where it goes into the engine you'll find a clamp with a bolt keeping it from moving.
BTW don't worry about an alternator when the truck isn't even running correct like you said backfiring an what not. You'll beat yourself for buying a new alternator when you coulda used that money to fix the engine to run better. Fix one project at a time rather than go all over the place. It'll get outta hand seriously. |

How does that last one bolt to the alternator?
I haven't really touched my truck since the incident with the distributor, as much as I'd like to I know nothing about anything on how to fix it other than putting another distributor in the truck and see how that works out I am going to be in an local online newspaper for my truck, pretty excited |

Lower bracket has 2 bolts that go into the block then one long one to hold the alternator
