This truck is turning out to be awesome, I just came in from pulling my motor and I just spent the last half hour reading your build haha.

I would suppose you are going to get a replacement board for that cracked one, instead of wood glue and clamping it?

You are dead right with the hidden bolt railings though, those do look crisp!

it cracked for a reason. clamping and glueing is not really a fix. it will crack again . may take a while but it will happen

I am sure glad you posted your intentions concerning that bed floor. And heck yeah! You pay premium dollar and get substandard garbage, not acceptable.
It is us, the restorer/builders that keep their industry (the re-pop people) going and we really need to hold them accountable for quality.

Finally received the correct bed wood kit ! Was pretty happy until I opened the second package. Two boards cracked and cut out of square.

Sigh.

Another kit on the way. 3 times lucky ?

Got the front body parts off Wednesday night and to the blaster yesterday,with any luck everything will be in epoxy primer for pick up Sunday morning (MOTHERS DAY !). was supposed to Be Saturday morn !!!!!

Good thing I dident make plans with Mom for breakfast ! SAFE !:pty:

I understand your desire for the nice wood bed floor. And respect it too!:metal:
But the reason I go for a metal floor from a 67-72 in my 63-66 trucks is because of the garbage that they, the asian importers sell and even some of the stuff made here.
Countless fenders, bumpers, doors and patch panels have all gone back because the quality just wasn't there at all.
I hope it is 3rd times a charm for you.... If so, you will have had 100% better luck than me.

Hello Vernski ! Not sure who the actual manufacture is,probably its best I don't as I'm sure they wouldn't want to hear from me !

I don't like to bad mouth anyone. However I sure don't want to see anyone else go through this.

I can tell you that Mar-K is the distributor and they are doing their very best to look after me.Good folks there,their all about good service.

My last bed kit for my GMC came from Mar-K and everything was high end with no problems. I'm sure they will make it right for you it must must be an oversight
on there end. Stuff happens sometimes but I know they will take care of you...Vernski:lol:

Looks like the bed wood is going to be made by a local.Im tired of the b.s . from the supplier and figure this will put an end to it.

I had to walk away from the truck for a while for sanity reasons,so in my spare time I tracked down a 700r4 to power my 283.I had originally found a powerglide,but after looking at my gearing,it just wouldn't be a good match.
I'd like to thank Steve at GMR Performance for helping me see the light on this ! I argued at first,but in the end realized the glide would be an old dog off the line.


The truck is going for final bodywork next week.Inner/outer fenders,grill support.hood and rad support will be finished and ready for paint.

I will post some pics once eveyrthing is underway.

Finally,I have some updates here !I have been waiting for Tyler's pics but his camera screwed up and their somewhere out in cyberspace !

Anyhow,Ill start with a few of the hood,fenders and cowl's.You will notice that all the gaps are consistent which wasn't the case when new.It took many hours,$$$$$$$$, and persistence to get it all right.I still might lower the hood slightly which may involve shaving the valance.

Now the hood,inner fenders,rad support,grill support are all original.The outer fenders are new.

The hood was an Arizona find which is good for the rust issues but was badly damaged at the front between the signal lights.Also it was sagging badly at its center.

The lower hood corners where meeting the cowl pieces were badly bent as well.

I decided to go with the hood seams welded and smoothed to match the box....,looks clean and cool !:ito:

Now being that I bought new fenders,I was prepared for the time they would need to fit them up right.I wanted to be consistent with the hood and box,so the front of the outer fenders have been welded and smoothed as well.The gaps in this area were so terrible that welding them up was a good way to keep this area clean and rust free.

Please ignore the runs in the primer !:D

I really like what you are doing with this truck. I am currently restoring a 65 and moving the tank to the rear like you. I think I am going to do something very similar to what you have done. Couple of questions. I noticed in some earlier posts you have a rubber fill hose and in later posts you had a steel one welded in. Did you see a problem with the rubber one? Also, you have a vent line in the later post. Could you just run a vented cap instead?

Fill hose will be rubber from tank to the steel tube,works out to about 12".As far as the vent tube goes,Im running a vented cap and the tube,because of the gas filler length...,more venting is better.

Time for a couple more pics ? Here are a few of the recent work completed.
The upside of the inner's all oem holes welded up bodyworked and ready for paint.I tried aftermarket junk and soon decided as in earlier posts searched out oem inners from California.
For all you future builders,dont waste your time !There is not a company out there that can stamp a new one that will work unless your prepared to spend 60 hours a side.
I had conduit welded under the drivers inner fender to hide the wire harness.I had the original harness hole welded and smoothed and moved it under the inner fender channel.

Just got my wheels this weekend !My cousin brought them up from Blaine Saturday afternoon, so tonight I thought Id check that they were shipped with the right bolt pattern.18X8.5...,should look good with a 55 or 60 series 285's.
Man...,a year and a half to finally decide on the wheel to go with.Definitely the right choice for my truck.

Area where the battery sits always gets a bit etched ehhh.. Looking good .. Billet wheels WOW long way from the last conversation we had.. SO is there a new GM crate engine somewhere as well.. , .. Drop me aline when you find the time.. Mine should be done this friday.. or at least painted.. HA HA

Just as I suspected my aftermarket vents are junk.Notice glass frame is bent downward and check out the rubber to door gap.I cant believe they can sell this crap.One more lesson learned about buying new !
Anyone who rebuilds these? Im loosing my patience so Let me know,I think Ill have them fix my originals

Been following your build and as I have posted before, repop stuff for 60-66 trucks is lacking quality at best.
Sorry about your frustrations.. I wholly feel ya brother..
There are some good parts available for you to rebuild your originals... and it's not all that difficult..

I rebuilt mine and really they are not hard. You do need to take your time and do one before the other.. And from what I saw the aftermarket stuff LMC anyways is junk. In fact I bought the new inner rail with the liner in it.. LMAO it is not even close to stock and it had the fuzzy side of velcro stuck in the track.. I bought the tools to rivit the parts back together, ended up having to modify that tool as well, rivits I got where a bit too long.. ETC..

I have to say the stuff that I have bought very little parts have been correct.

I pull all my glass out of my frames, re did the tape.. bead blasted the frames and epoxy painted them satin black.. and replaced all the seals. Ed some where I think I posted up pics of that.

Its not hard , take your time, and you can do it ED.. :)

I went through these same issues with repop stuff on my 62 Impala. Nearly all of it is marginal at best with some being completely unuseable. IF you can get OEM it's the way to go.

Here's a few more pics or the recent work done.OEM rad support ! Was in good shape rust wise,did need bodywork as it was out of an an ambulance and must of hit something in its previuos life.(hopefully not on the way to emergency):eek:

Also a couple pics of the firewall finally painted.Alot of work went into welding and smoothing it.Im glad the time was taken to go the extra mile here,It will be worth it in the end.I added a couple nuts to the top of Captains booster bracket so I can cap it once the assembly is complete.
I'm considering running the wiper valance without the rubber to firewall to hood strip,not really sure its necessary.

I'm currently in the process of welding and smoothing the bumper bolts but have heard a few stories of bumpers done this way before and the chrome cracked at a few of the welds,so anyone who wants to give their input here will be appreciated.Maybe Ill scrap the idea if its a loosing venture.
Just so I dont look like Ive been sitting around on my a$$ doing nothing..., I have decided against the 283 sb build for my truck,now going with a full roller 383 .More torqe more hp and will make more sense with the 700r4 and 308's behind it.
