I am going to try and play a bit of catch up with you tonight after work. The goal is to get some more sheet metal off mine.

Re: Project "Popeye"
I've been busting my but trying to get the engine/trans installed in the chassis for good. There are alot of little parts to gather and details to mind but I finished detailing and painting, then stabbed the engine. Now I'm waiting on a pilot bearing and flywheel bolts. Enjoy:

Re: Project "Popeye"
the travel height looks great. I like how it isn't slammed too, just in case
something happens, it's nice to not be stranded. Everything is looking real good and clean. I really like the OG frames with MII on them, they look much cleaner than s-10 swaps. I think I might try and go that route on my next project, even though I got another s-10 frame and OG frame sitting and waiting. good work and good tunes in the BG. |
Re: Project "Popeye"

Re: Project "Popeye"
Really nice setup you got there.
How many more horses does the Victor Jr with carb gives over the stock LS6 intake and TB setup if the bottom end is stock? What made you go that route? Tri5 |
Re: Project "Popeye"
I've seen different data on the intake, based on LS1 and LS6 engines, from 20-40 added hp over stock. With a cam the potential is greater. I'm guestimating about 350-360hp at the crank, the engine was good for about 305 hp stock.
Just did it for the looks really. It probably would have been easier to go with EFI, I had all the stuff. |

PISSED!!!!!!!!!
Crappy parts just ruined a productive evening. My wife was gracious enough to let me go play after dinner (with 2 kids and full time jobs this is a big deal on a weekday). I've gotten the engine in and collected everything I needed to put the flywheel, clutch assembly and trans in for good too. I took my time, checked the bellhousing runout (which was surprisingly good), installed the pilot bearing, and flywheel. Torqued the flywheel bolts 17lbs, 34lbs, 69lbs...lined up the clutch and pressure plate, installed the bolts finger tight and began to torque. Wait, why is this pressure plate bolt spinning freely in the flywheel?????????? The dang threads on the very last bolt were crap, never made it past 10lbs of torque. I had to remove everything including the $50, one-time use, TTY, special order flywheel bolts (bet O'Reilly won't be replacing those huh?). Soooo frustrating. Anyways, here's some "update" pics. Hope I'm in a better mood next time :sumo: |
Re: Project "Popeye"
sorry to hear that !!

Re: Project "Popeye"
Dude, that soooo freakin' sucks! I'm sorry!

Re: Project "Popeye"
LEEVON, It just seems like everything that you buy is junk. It would also be the very last bolt! Sorry about that.
|
Re: Project "Popeye"
Ya ... that would have pissed me off too.
Better days are on the way. Don't sweat it. Life is way to short. Ratty 46 |
Re: Project "Popeye"
Ah, no sweat really. A replacement is on the way, trans will be in by the weekend!

Re: Project "Popeye"
great build. Did you ever switch to the LS1 oil pan or are you still running the truck pan? do you have any motor mount pics...my 6.0L seems to sit low, espically the pan when I have it air'd down.

Re: Project "Popeye"
I saw this thread a while ago; when you first got it. I thought I was subscribed, but I guess I wasn't. I just found it again. You've been busy.
I thought about doing the trailing arm set up on my '51. Looks like that is working out great for ya. |

Re: Project "Popeye"
the s-10 bed thing had my curiosity up, so i had to check that out , i think that would be killer on POPEYE, i like it with the tubs in it in case you ever run wider wheels
|
Re: Project "Popeye"
I might have to do some small tubs, looks like I've only got 1/2 tire clearance at ride height. Surely an S-10 bed can be found cheap.
|
Re: Project "Popeye"
Yes, I did the s10 bed floor in mine and I like it. I first had the tubs, but cut them out later so that I could haul plywood in the bed. Here's the pics again:

Jumped over here to see what popeye was. Looking good. I have a 52 big truck in hidding I want to put a tube frame under with a suicide front and chop with a straight 6 or even better a straight 8.I just sold my 52 Daily driver. Metric subframe with v-8 auto, ps pb and cruise. You should have seen peoples faces when I'd blow by them on I-44. I'll try to post a pic or 2.
Not trying to jump on your thread here. Looks like you have a nice little place to work on your toys also. |
Re: Project "Popeye"
Oh man that's a cool truck!
|
Re: Project "Popeye"
Thanks I have my moments.Yours has me itchen to start my tube frame truck. I really wish I could sell the 71. I'm just getting tired of it. The only reason I want TBI is something to do more or less. 700r4 should be put together this week. I may try to get it in next weekend.

The transmission is finally in for good and the Hurst shifter cleaned up real nice after a soak in oxalic acid and some soda blasting then a little grease. It shifts nice and smooth, not sloppy like I expected. I also mocked-up the brake booster and decided that I'm going to move it up to the firewall. The brake arm hits the clutch arm and also there is no room for exhaust on that side.
I spent some time yesterday modifying the center crossmember to make room for the driveshaft. Luckily I had some 1/4" plate and was able to cut a section out and fab a hump. I have a driveshaft being made next week. As you can see I have a large but manageable to-do list left for the chassis! This week is brake lines... |
