Here's a little progress. A clean and painted engine for the swap. A nice shot of some brackets getting the degreaser treatment.....and for anyone considering a BBC swap, here is the measure you need. With the clam shell mounts on the block you will need your mounts approx 16.75'' apart. This is the centerline of the holes in the clams.

Lastly, the engine is just about in one piece again with a bunch of Felpro gaskets.

I used Duplicolor Chevy Orange Engine Paint #1620; rattlecans. They do make a primer, but it doesnt specifically say to use it. I cleaned the crap out of the block and then wiped it down with wax and grease remover before finally spraying. It was on the cold side, so I did about 3 med/thin coats.

I was just wondering, I sandblasted mine and used wax and grease remover. I used VHT orange. I did it in July and it's been sitting since. I was just worried about it rusting for some reason. Are you gonna put anykind of clear on it to protect the paint?

I have found some, but I dont see much difference in them compared to what I have already. Do they have a different slope or angle somewhere that helps out? I was looking at mine and thought I would trim the lower 'foot' and they are almost a perfect triangle for mounting.

The '73-'87 C20's frames are closer in height to our trucks frames than the '73-'87 C10 frames. I have yet to install a set, but I have measured the frames and compared them. There was another member that originally brought this to my attention.

I guess only Jason wanted to wave goodbye:lol:. Well, pulled the engine and tried the mounts. Looks like they fit good to me. The frame will be trimmed back roughly 1/2'' to use the factory holes up top and I will drill the lowers. I measured my mount holes and they were 16 3/8''. By the time I lean back the mounts into the factory holes they should be perfect. I will be pulling the trans forward a bit; maybe an inch. I used the mounts in the frame to judge length and then measured the 454.

For those who mentioned putting material under the top of the mount; this is only neccessary if you use the factory lower holes.....at least as far as I can tell.

A mid-day update as I know many are on the edge of their seat!!:lol: Here are the mounts and some more measuring. Off the core support, directly in line with the frame, my mounts are going 18.5'' back to the front edge. I have also surmised that I have a newer X-member that I was not aware of. I think that is why the mounts fit so nicely.

I notched the frame back roughly .5'' to fit the mount in place. I also redrilled the 2 lower holes which are directly below the factory holes. This puts my mount holes at exactly 16.75 inches to center. I will put a thick washer(1/16th) under the front lower hole to act as a spacer as there is a little rocking of the mount.

Now I just need to blast 40+ years of grease and dirt and move a brake line and my trans lines. Also getting a coat of black rattle to pretty things up.

Once you get that engine set in there, you might want to check the carb flange on the intake for level and also check to be sure that your trans output is in the same plane as the pinion in the rear end.

I did a little measuring regarding my previous post on the C20 motor mount brackets. In the area of the motor mounts, the '63-'66 frames measure about 5 3/8" tall. The '73-'87 C20 frames measure about 5 1/2" tall. The '73-'87 C10 frames measure about 6" tall. Just a little FYI.

I'll confirm that measurement on my frame; I'm sure it's the same, but what the hay!!:lol: I think you're right, Cap'n.....if I used the mounts in the factory holes the mounts would be roughly that high above the frame. Notching eliminates some of that height as it rotates the bracket outward. I chose that and to lower the bottom bolt holes. The C20's would definitely be a good fit. I just lucked out with the 73+ X-member having the correct contour for the brackets.

It looks as though the engine will sit down in the bay nicely. Long tube headers are definitely a no go, at least if one is lowered or bagged. I think my choice of headers will work well, too. I'm gonna find out anyway, as I have my new brake line made and I still need to do the trans lines.

Well, my frame is 5 3/8th's inches high. But no, not much. I have just been cleaning up parts and tracking down a couple things I need. I need to clean up my inner fenders and figure out how to hook up my TV cable to the carb correctly. I am also putting my serpentine system together and need one part.

My parents are visiting so I am not doing much work on it for a couple days. I do have the mounts in and my brake line relocated. The fire wall also has a fresh coat of black. I'll get a pic.

Opened up a real can of worms and pulled out all the crap in the way and and I'm cleaning up and painting everything. I figured I mite as well as you dont get the chance very often......so this is where I am. Looks like the truck was gold originally.

Any body else find zinc-chromate under their paint?? I didnt know they used that stuff:confused:

Everything cleaned up nicely. Rattled on some black and swung in the engine. I had to pull it back out as my mounts were 1/4'' too close together. No big deal, but it had to be done. Your mount holes should be 17'' apart. I was a little tite and just couldn't get it to drop in place. The second shot was a beauty and it dropped right in and had to do the usual screwing around to get the bolts thru the mounts....nothing major for only being told this should work and never having seen it done. My trans pulled forward about 1.25'' and the holes lined up perfectly in the frame.

Anyway, here are the pics..........

Have the serpentine set-up complete. A complete maze of metric and SAE bolts. Mocked up the engine just to see if everything was going to fit....like someone could actually run out of space under one of these hoods.:lol: The a/c compressor is just a heavy pulley right now; eventually it will get tossed.
