I still have not got anything worth while from LKQ, so I'm going with Certified Auto Recycling for the engine. I even called the guy at LKQ on Friday, and all I got was excuses as to why he has not got back to me. And he STILL didn't have a price for me. And I have also emailed a few other places and have not heard back from them yet either. So apparently the economy isn't doing too bad for them, since they don't need my business. Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
i found a 2004 5.3/4l60 out of a burb in craigslist today for $1800 all wiring, cpu, everything 40,000 miles. going to call him tomorrow and find out more. thanks for the link glock i'll check it out.

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
That's not too bad, especially for the mileage and coming with a trans. The 04 will have a drive by wire throttle body, so be sure to get the TAC (throttle actuator control) module and the throttle pedal itself. Hell, get everything they will let you take for the money!

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
 were bouncing back and forth from each others thread! yes thank you for that heads up. i hope he still has the truck there to verify miles and maybe hear it run. ill find out tomorrow and let you know.

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
:but: i have a good excuse though.... ive been scouring ls1truck.com and performancetruck for info on this ls swap... lots of reading. seems as if 1badc10 wishes he would have went w/ a sbc because the 5.3/4l60e is getting expensive. i think he's had quite a few problems though... on a side note i do have a bit of an update.
talked to the guy w/ the motor and trans on cl. he said the motors actually a 2002 and the trans is 2004. so no dbw throttle... and he said he would give me a 4 month time period to get it running (warranty) but that wont work because i'm not just stabbing it in there and hooking it up... i have ALOT of work left before i even think of firing it up. i dont know what to do:( swapping in the ls might be too much during a total frame off. i'm going to do a bit more reading in my book 'how to swap an ls motor into anything' before i start trying to climb back up that damn fence! |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
1badc10 self admittedly went about the install the wrong way. He had major trans issues for who knows why, one head gasket had to be replaced because who ever did the work before put the gasket on upside down, and he needed to get a stand-alone harness but he self-modified the stock truck harness. I know that would be a lot of work for anyone.
If it were me i'd buy an engine/trans/harness/pcm combo from one place. The best way might be to become friends with the local salvage yard and let them know what you're looking for while you start the body work and paint. Then once they find your combo, you install, send the harness out to get re-worked at a number of companies that do good work, maybe the same people can re-tune the pcm aswell. Your major problem may be the fuel system, you may need new(87)tanks or just a rear mounted blazer tank(87-91), use a stock sender and a newer gm vortec intake pump. I think you might be able to use your tanks with newer in tank pumps just like s&p did with their install on a 77. Here is a link to another LS install from the same company. It's a full on show install, you would not need to do that much work but it does contain a lot of good info. http://www.hotrodlane.cc/PDFFILES/85...s2%20truck.pdf |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)

Hey, did I ever PM you the list of parts and part numbers for the complete fuel system stuff? If I didn't, let me know. I can PM it to you or just post it in your thread so it becomes permanent record!
Then it will be staring back at you every day........ |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Well then, throw those away and print this! I made a couple changes, like adding two different connection options for the filter/regulator.
* AC Delco EP381 in-tank pumps. $69 each at http://store.getgmparts.com/fe0114.html * Pollak high psi tank selector valve, this is a direct OEM replacement (JC Whitney p/n ZX812705U) $83 * Fuel selector switch from an 87, replaces existing dash switch (AC Delco p/n D7089C) $11.50 at rockauto.com * Corvette filter/regulator if running a returnless/1 line system (WIX p/n 33737) $34 at rockauto.com If you don't already have in-tank pumps, you'll need sending units: * Dorman p/n 692027 for the driver side, $94 at rockauto.com * Dorman p/n 692044 for the passenger side, $101 at rockauto.com To make the connections at the filter/regulator: The inexpensive way: * 3/8" female connector (Dorman p/n 800121) $6.30 at rockauto.com * 5/16" female connector (Dorman p/n 800120) $6.30 at rockauto.com * 3/8" x 12" double ended male connector (Dorman p/n 800155) $8.20 at rockauto.com The "nicer looking" way: * 3/8" to -6AN straight fitting, Russell #640850 (this one is also is needed for connection to the fuel rail) * 5/16" to -6 AN straight fitting, Russell #640860 * -6AN to -6AN union, Russell #660350 * -6AN tube sleeve, Russell #660650 * -6AN tube nut, Russell #660571 And be sure to use a good quality high psi fuel pressure hose for connections, not regular fuel line. And use smooth stainless fuel hose clamps that look like these: http://www.partssystems.com/images/T/fuel-01.JPG |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Bob, you are the man! very much apprieciated buddy! feel free to post any other info such as radiator, headers, mounts, ect.
not sure which headers i'm going to go w/ yet. but 98-00 f body stock manifolds or shorties will work. i still need to call the smog ref. to find out what headers they expect me to run to pass. thats going to be the deciding factor for me... to pass or not to pass;) |

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Good luck on your engine search! I'm gonna plug Certified Auto Recyclers once again just in case you don't have any luck finding something local. I have been on the phone all morning with yards in the Denver metro area. So far the best deal I've found was $700 for a basic long block, and by the time he added all the bolt-on's to the price, it was almost $300 more than the one I'm getting from Alabama, which includes shipping! Craigslist and eBay haven't turned up anything for me either.
Hopefully they are more plentiful around your area! I did get a number for a place called RCS (1-800-259-4020) by member Jonboy, they are in the DFW area. Ya might try them too. |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Rub it in why don't ya! Can't wait to see the pics. If it bothers you that much you might as well take it back off and do it now, instead of months down the road when you can't stand it anymore, and then there is more stuff in the way! I know how it is to be OCD on stuff.
