Then maybe I can put stuff back together. |
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
wow the rotors got rusty fast, loots good tho
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
yea as soon as water hit them bam rusted instantly. I plan to knock the rust off and then clean them with brake clean before use for sure.
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
or replace them since they are out
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
I don't think so. notice the title? tight budget? I spent my last $20 buying brake hoses and sway bar end links. I'd like to buy new ones or just have these resurfaced.
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
lol true :) looks great tho
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
thanks, be alot better once I get my paint on lol.
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
How many cans did it take to paint all those? Looks really good

Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
less then one. it's a quart of oil based rustoleum. I only used a little over half.
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
2nd coat on the front end, and then installed all 4 balljoints and reinstalled the knuckles....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...4/100_4186.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...4/100_4183.jpg |
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
Did you pull the front end apart just for paint?
That's dedication. |
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
yea clean up and paint, but the steering stuff was to replace it all, new balljoints, tie rods, idler arm.
the diff. I took out to clean and paint but I got seals coming for it. I'm gonna fix the leaking axle seal and pinion seal on it. I got the rotors, pads, and calipers put on yesterday, then fought the sway bar end links, and also fought the grease fittings. Now it's greased up and the brakes are on, even got the new brake hoses on it. |
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
careful when you pull the axles for the seal. In the long end there is a washer/spacer that goes on the little bearing race on the end of the axle shaft. you wanna make sure that's in place. Mine fell and I didn't know it was there and it chewed the hell out of some bearings.
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
I got t all apart and put back together but the seals are wrong. the seal that was leaking wasn't a bad seal, just wasn't sealing to the housing like it's too small of dia. just barely to make it tight enough to be a press fit. it goes into place easy.
The pinion seal i got it too small too. I got the wrong part number for it, but the axle seal is the one everyone calls for and it won't seal up to the housing right. |
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
I haven't taken any pics but it's all back together, just working on setting the toe, then have to tighten the sway bar end links, fill fluids, like diff. brake, and then power steering. I also of course have to bleed all the brakes. Then I need to do the body work on my inner fenders to get them ready.
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
front end is back together, have to do all the fluids and bleed brakes and such though. Also check toe and have an alignment done, but for now I started on body work underhood.
I sanded and primed the inners and then painted the underside of them same as my frame, then did the back of the fenders and firewall, doing all the body worked areas, fan shroud and rad. support in body color. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...4/100_4188.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...4/100_4189.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...4/100_4187.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...4/100_4190.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...4/100_4193.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...4/100_4191.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...4/100_4192.jpg |

Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
This truck has definitely come along way! I like the way the underhood is looking.
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
thanks, I'm looking forward to getting it back together, and doing the rest of the truck.
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
It's coming along good. I didn't notice if you had mentioned this or not, but are you gonna end up painting the truck blue when it's all said and done? Because the blue is looking damn good on your parts.
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
yes sir the entire truck is going to be that same blue. going to do behind the cab and bed, door jambs, bottom of the hood and the entire outside, bedline the inside of the bed, maybe throw in some matching blue inside the cab.
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
Looking really good Chris. Hopefully that nice damage on your driver's side won't be able to be seen when it's done lol.
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
yea I'll fix it. I aint gonna paint it unless it's fixed lol.
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
Lol I figured that man. Just saying I hope it comes out good when it's all said and done. Question. Does that shade blue hide bondo well?
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
seemed to hide pretty well. I usually make sure my bondo is nice and flat and feathered in right before hand though.
As for covering light colors like grey primer it doesn't do so well, takes 4-5 coats to really cover it nicely. |
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
Was just wondering because the crew cab I plan on repainting with the original blue
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
prep work is the key man, just take you rtime and make sure it feels smooth.
Then use some good high build primer or soemthing over it to help with small imperfections. |
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
It'll be a while before it's ready lol
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
still got more pieces to put on and then clean up and detail paint/touch up some spots I missed.
but you get the point.. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...4/100_4237.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...4/100_4236.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...4/100_4235.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...4/100_4234.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...4/100_4233.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...4/100_4232.jpg |

Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
Looking good man, glad to see it coming together nicely.
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
fan shroud went on yesterday, some touch ups and then installed my gauge and radio trim I painted awhile back...

Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
ordered door pins and bushings today, hope to get them in next week, pull the doors and jamb them. I also worked on the park brake cables the other day, too hot out so I aint done yet with them.
|
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
parking brake cables all done, ended up having issues with everything, had to get another wheel cylinder, both were new, not even a year or so old, but the boot got torn. I also bent a spring so I bought a hardware kit, best thing ever, I'm buying them all the time from now on.
parking brake cables are all on hooked up and working good, brakes are adjusted as well. now my battery is dead LOL. I also have yet to bleed all the brakes, set toe, put gas in it and drive it since all the new front end parts and paint. |
Re: My 88 buildup on a tight budget
jambs are done now. new bushings installed, just have to put the doors back on the truck.
