Took the truck out friday night and got 4 nice passes in . The track was pretty good for street car night it went .012 with 46 # in the fronts and .026 with 45#s. Back to printing time slips with the Demon . The QFT never did the same thing twice . These showed up and i got them mounted and screwed . They get balanced monday .

Re: New project

Thanks , Marv . Been alot of work and many a long night . This will be my first season going in with a truck that is working already . Last year i was messing with chassis and drag radials between rounds . It would go out and spin and i would spray the difference back up after i heard throttle chops . That worked pretty good for me . I would go back to the pits and adjust and repeat the same thing . I believe i got all that worked out this year . Should only have to go out and drive , well after all the work of loading and unloading .

Looks like here it will be simialr to IHRA now with box and no box classes . Last year was a true no elctronics "footbrake" only and full on electronics class called "super pro" . It appears that this year in no box trans brakes and 2-steps will be allowed in "footbrake" . I believe it is this way in the rest of the country and other divisions . I personally dont see an advantage to a transbrake over footbraking without the delay box to move reaction around . The 2-step would ensure that you leave at the same rpm everytime . Thinking im gonna start a seperate thread on just this subject .

It's simple
MASS!!!!! I can move my thumb a lot easier, more reliably, and more consistantly than I can my big ol pfhat leg. ROTF,,

But seriously......
I don't know how much there is to this,, but there was a lonnnnnng discussion some time ago over on the bullet (geeeee go figure that YellowBullet had some HUGE thread on any topic!) ) anyways, the discussion was about Left brain / Right hand, vs Left brain Left leg. I won't pretend to remember or even understand all that was going on in that discussion,, but it 'seemed' like there were some pretty smart, knowledgable people laying out facts and figures. I can't find the thread,, might have even been long ago enough for it to have evaporated in the meltdown when Monty moved the site.

I know we have an artistic - creative - illogical - whimiscial - non conformist - irrational side of our brain (let's just call that our femmmmminin side LOL) and a side that controls logic and functional things like sub-consious muscle function breathing - heart beat - flight or flight - basically 'reactions' (you run, your muscles scream for more O2, you breathe heavy and your heart beats faster - harder without 'thinking' about making it happen. That side also controls things like reactions to the eye seeing light,, making your thumb / leg / foot react.

All I really remember out of it (obviously because it was all that applied to me and was what I wanted to hear...) Left brain, right arm-hand-thumb. That is the most common, consistant, and trainable motion.

And for some reason it shouldn't be a 'thumb' motion, it shold be a 'BODY' motion for consistancy. You don't grip the wheel and pop your thumb off the button,, it should be OPEN HAND, thumb on the button and release with a shoulder / elbow / wrist / thumb motion,,, THAT was the most 'time consistant' motion.

Also your thumb should be up in your field of view or perriferial view at least. Somewhere close to the path of the eye to the light.

I brought up "how can that be so set in stone,, we have left handed people and people who are more logical than artistic",, and vice versa.. well you know th ebullet,, I was bi*tch slapped around the forum a couple of times and basically told to shut up, listen and learn LOL.

So why a transbrake,, apparently your brain and body can be more consistant

The rest of it is just training your brain for the 'when' part!

(sorry for bad spelling and typing,, ina hurry this morning)

Re: New project

Weekend started out crazy . My Powerstroke had the pickup fall off in the tank . I was working nights all week , so friday morning at 5am i get home and start dropping the tank . Had it on the ground by 7:30 and went to bed . Got up around 11 and started the "hutch" and "harpoon" mods to fix Fords better idea . Finished that up about 4 pm . The Luv is still on jacks in the garage . Finished the rotor and cap install and got it back down on the ground ( somehow i galled a lug nut and stud on paas rear so i replaced them ) . Started to load the enclosed and head to the track . Got to the track at 8:30 pm . This place was packed drag cars everywhere and it was street car night on top of it . Got 2 test hits in and i was feeling really good as it went .012 & .021 off the trailer 6.95 backed with a 6.96 . Loaded everything up and loacked the trailer up and headed home .

Saturday morning . Ready to race . Have my buddies kid crawl into the truck to pull it out of the trailer and i gues he hit the linelock button with his knee . Line lock coil burns up so bad the plunger o rings melt . 2 good time trials and into first rounds . Just a note only 3 guys on transbrake as this was just announced tuesday and still may not be final when the new director of Div. 4 gets in place . First round win , second round win , but the tach quites and it's done . Fourth round i get back and i have oil drips . i clean it up and im still going . Lights are decent , but not there yet . Anyway oil down and we sit for an hour . Cold brakes and i creep in to deep and go .014 red in quarter finals , but a good fist outting . Almost 100 cars

Sunday , Got line lock kit i bought for the White Luv , my old tach off the shelf , a few odds and ends , fuel , breakfast tacos and headed out . Found passesnger side valve cover gasket broke and replaced it . swapped tachs , and replaced the entire line lock and bleed the brakes . Good to go except left knee swollen from impact with roll bar sat . Got to the lanes and over here people talking about the new transbrake rule . I index race off a brake , so what the hell . .010 first hit . Went to 11 cars and got out run due to weather change and not taking dial out . Had a good weekend and im getting things lined out .

I work with a guy that was out there racing. He drives a red mid 80's camaro with a little sbc. He was talking about how no one including him was told there was anychanges and all his paper work says super pro and footbrake are the only classes.

Glad your truck ran good. Hope to be out there with mine in the near future.

I ask the same questions . All my paperwork said footbrake or super pro . They said they didnt have time to change it . They also said they had a drivers meeting the 16th and i was working . The way i understand it is it is now box and no-box or E (box ) and NO-E

Race 3 & 4 this weekend . Also added shifnoid and MSD window switch . The window switch can be adjusted in the lanes vs. being forced to use the laptop . I had to adjust the cable and make it was not bound up . I fire a S 55 relay with the msd digital window switch which fires the solinoid . The shifter is new and i carpeted it to mak it near invisible in the cab . I still have to have door panels made and paint the inside of the doors flat black . We will see how these changes work this weekend .

Re: New project

Quick update , got to 13 cars saturday and got tree'd and broke out , but got to 7 cars sunday and went .119 red in the quarters  So i got some of my money back . The left lane was tricky for some reason . Alot of .100 plus reds and 60' numbers would swing like .03 for most i talked to . The truck really was trying to print slips . 6.945-6.998 ( i chopped once on the 6.99)

Shift noid was working ok saturday when i got outrun . I had the solinoid tied into the hot side of my S55 relay for the nitrous and then the power daisy chained off the shift noid hot side . This caused a voltage drop when the shifnoid "hit" causing the window switch to drop out and restart . The window switch has a start sequence that shows on and off and cylinder count before it becomes armed . Once powered down it takes a while to be re-armed . I fixed this by tieing the power from the window switch ( low amp draw ) to the Nitrous S55 and running a new power wire to the starter solinoid . The starter solinoid and the Shift noid are non coencidental loads , meaning they wont be drawing amps at the same time . I also put a fresh S55 in for the shifter just to be safe . BAM ! hits everytime . The shifter set up made the truck a tenth quicker . The MSD digital window switch and the auto meter tach read different rpms . The tach is slow . I have been shifting late due to the tach/shift light . I set the shift light 100 above the shift point and use that for something else now . 7.0 index racing this Saturday and maybe 1/8th mile footbrake at sealy sunday for $1K purse .

Well a quick update . rains have been bad . Any of ya'll that stay up with sportsman racing know they called off all the sportsman stuff at the national event . Well we got through that and we haven't really had a decent weekend to test . I have changed a few things since the last outing and i was looking forward to getting out this weekend , but rain on friday and so far today . They have cancelled friday and saturday . Looks like we are going to run mothers day . Track will be green im sure . Anyway , finally got one of these . Took it over and had a freshen up done . 7 clutch plate deal . Just a real nice sportsman glide . We opened up a few places in it and ran it on a trans dyno with a sportsman tree . Looks like it will pick up my reaction times over the 400 and use less power . Also the wheelies will be tames some , not that they were bad . Also bought a stock case glide with a brake for the S10 LS project .

Your gonna like the glide (is it t turbo input or are you doing a new converter?)

Only down side is now your looking for a new shifter. Lots of good glide shifters out there in both air and solenoid.

Headed to a race in Tucson this evening myself. First points race I've made all year (so far) See if I can't clear out some of the cobb-webs and rust (in the drivers head that is LOL)

Marv, it is turbo spline and yes a new converter, ATI treemaster MRT . It went to 3200 on the the dyno which he said wous be 4200-4400 in may application . My window switch will work dropping power also for a glide noid . The trans also came with the old style hurst powerglide shifter quarter stick maybe . I am running No-E and E today and next weekend i am running IHRA in both classes footbrake and electronics (sat) and mod and top plus 7.0 index sunday .

It will be a couple of weeks before i get it installed as i have to fab a trans mount and driveshaft has to be modded to fit . My new (25 passes) Freakshow deal will go into the S-10 LS deal . I also bought a stock case glide that he built fr a guy who never came back and picked it up . I got a stock case glide 1.76 with the extra clutches and a sportsman brake , turbo input and deep aluminum pan . Just a good solid trans .

Wow , what a pain in the rear . It took alot to put this 400 in this small truck and alot to swap it out .

Re: New project

Got the glide in and running . Went to Lonestar motorsports park in Sealy , Texas to run IHRA . So far the reaction times are alot better . The 2 speed is boring compared to the 400 as i was driving alot more .

Reaction times are as follows: .066,.060,.010,.010.-011( i anticipated),.023, ..015,.006,.025

Pretty happy with the swap so far . Shiftnoid setup just came in .

hotrod 80 06-02-2013 11:01 AM

Re: New project

Got the shiftnoid set up installed and Got to 8 cars saturday night . Truck spun and lost 4 numbers in the hole . Was 1.59 all night and went 1.63 . It didnt feel that bad , as im getting use to all the new feels with the glide . I tried to spray it back but was too late to get in the spray . Went .061 to his .069 and he went 7.47 dead on with a 6 and i was 7.141 on a 7.12 . Should have started spraying earlier and just tried to fender him . Live and learn i guess .

I probably should have left that part out , but for the hand full of people that find this thread i'll probably never race any of them . I like the spray . I have the patience to make sure my tuneup is correct and spot on so it works for me . And yes the 275 deal is big . The 5.80 index is huge down here too.

Re: New project

Fianlly got one . I recently came across a deal on a Strange aluminum 9 inch center with 4.56 gears , daytona pinion support , 1350 billet yoke and 31 spline spool . I swapped it it and the truck just kinda moved to my spot on the tree . Lights are way better , Powerglide is consistant and i was focused . I had all hard races and every round was with someone higher than me in points .

Let me ask a laymen question.

What does it take to get a Wally?

I really don't know much about it, other than whatever it is, it's support to be very had to get.

Congrats on all your success! :metal:

Saturday is a sportsmens challenge . Meaning a bracket race where the winner gets a Wally . It will bring alot of people that dont normally run our program out so we will probably have a huge field of cars . They are hard to get . Usually you have to win a divisional to get one . Every once in a while they randomly select races to have one at .

Well , no double down . Got to the track friday and the rain started . Saturday we ran sportman challenge . I double teched in footbrake and super pro ( electronic ) . I told myself i wouldnt double again and i should have taken my own advise. I went .006 in FB and .014 in E first round . Game on !

2nd time trial in E .000 ! It came down from the wheelie and broke a cord in the driverside front tire . Like a moron i drove it out , but i 3 7.09 passes under my belt . Unhooked my Ford and hauled to the house . Jacked up the other truck and grabbed the front tires . Totally new set up now , so i had no idea what it was going to do . New tires changed the set up . -.015 in FB and .-022 in E with the bye so i was still in E . Took 6 psi out of the fronts and 1/2 # out od the rears . Still red . Totally out .

Sunday morning fresh start plus king of the track race after all was finished . Just ran FB . Set the air back up to starting point and was .-027 . Im was hitting my spot . Move 2 step down 200 rpm . .033 decent . Second round i got hammered on the tree . .015 to my .078 i was dead late .

Made tire adjust ments and went back up on tire pressure 1 # and 100 on 2 step for king of the track . .017 . Broke out by .004 first round , but cross talk was on so we reran . Truck was way hot and i went red .-018.

season is over til div 4 in ennis

Re: New project

Guys , i haven't updated for a while so i figured i better . I ended up having alot of trouble . Carb issues mainly due to fantastic air . We average around 2000-2800 DA here off the water in Baytown . We started up their with like -900 DA . I had huge lean spots on transision and the truck just wouldnt leave . I mean not move . I was also footbraking the truck . This was different for me because my home track has basically a box and no box classes . The no box class allows me to leave on a 2 step and a transbrake . Anyway , the reaction times were like ,108-.160 for test and tune and i went out first round in the gamblers race before i got enough fuel in it to make it work . I just said **** it and went up 4 jets front and rear and set the idle screws were my eyes watered and went for it . First round of the real deal and i dialed a 7.03 . Staged the truck perfect and man did it leave . I was watching the yellows as i was going by and surprised to see the green . Other guy was dial 6.33 so i had a good head start . I watched him leave in the mirror and he just wasn't getting there . At 400' i was off the throttle coasting down through the traps when he came past me . I was .024 r/t he was .118 . I broke out with a 6.88 ! If i would have know this before i would have just drivin it out for the time slip . 1.501 60' and was on the best pass ever on motor . Anyway i was out and it was beer time .

Yesterday i forced a very good friend and long time buddy of mine to take my truck to sealy and run 7.0 index . Rodger has a truck ( the white S-10 i built ) and runs 7.90's . This was a new experience for him and a big move up . He did ok , but got rattled a bit due to the pro tree and transbrake .

Starting tuesday the motor will be coming out as all the new parts are in . Plans are to hone the block , new pistons and rings , rod and main bearings all new seals , a cam swap ( same specs except 108 CL ) , 220 AFR heads , single plain intake with fogger and 250 jets , different powerglide with a pro brake , and a "mini tub" to the frame rails for the bed sides . If i can pull it off im gonna try and replace the rust spots in the rockers and repaint the entire truck . We will see if i have time .

Plans for next year include a full season of NHRA bracket racing along with as much as i can stand IHRA bracket racing . Hopefully the changes that i make will get the truck into the 10.80's so i can run some Super Street (10.90) divisional stuff also .

Re: New project

Thanks , Racing is done for the year ans we have about 65 days til the start of the new season . I just decided not to break up the old motor . It has been good to me and im going to keep it together .

I am working on a complete new motor based on a 880 4 bolt vortec block . I have the JE pistons , 6" Carrillo rods and Lunati crank @ 3.75 . Budget is tight so 385" it is . Probably end up solid roller @ 250/260 something and mid 6's on the lift . Single plane with 300 fogger and AFR 220's on it . New glide with pro brake and my current ATI 5200 converter . Dan Divinchi here in Houston is building the carb for it .

Also i bought a 83' El camino that the 2 bolt 355 will go in . with my old powerglide . I will attempt to run 2 classes next year and the elco will be for electronics class and i will leap into the delay box world slowly , like 7.90's

Pics of all this will be coming and probably a new thread about the elco .
