Thanks guys. Im not doing this metal work, a buddy is doing it at his shop in Huntsville AL. I seen some of his other work and kinda gave him free reign to do what he thougbt looked good, so far im pretty happy. I stoked to get it back. I got it entered into the world of wheel in Birmingham here in a feb. Gotta get it ready.

Layedout,

I wanted to see if you can elaborate on what you did for the water temp sensor? Maybe you can share some pics too if you have them? Will the original sensor and gauge work if I can find an adapter to plug it into the passenger side head? Thanks in advance!

The gauges I purchased came with a new temp sensor. It screwed into the head where the original is. I dont have the truck right now, its in the shop but i can take a pic once i get it. Ack in a week or so.

These engines normally run over 200. Gotta figure out if i got somethong wrong in the cooling system or not. I got black fluid that keeps showing up. I thinm its dexcool mixed with green. Im gonna flush the system and see what i get. Steering linkage is messed up. I think i may have the center link on backwards. The pass side where the tierod connects to the center link. The nut tightens all the way down and the cotter pin hole is like almost a half inch away from the castle nut. It tightens way too far. Other side barely tightens to the castle nut. Im thinking the taper or stud side is different per side. If not i got a defective center link

Great looking truck! I'll definitely be looking at this during my build. Did you ever figure out the tie rod issue? Mine is the same way when I tightened them down the hole for the cotter pin is half inch away from the castle nut. I've heard of guys using washers to make up the difference but wanted to know if you found a solution. Thanks.

Re: You guessed it, 1950 s10 swap.

So its a common issue to have the tie rod do that? I thought i had done something wrong. I just used washers to make the diff. I got a new gearbox im going to put on (steering is very loose) and i got the tierods off the truck with it. Figured i would swap it all out then.

What size tires will you be running? I am on the fence between running 18s and 20s- curious how they will fit!

The front tires will be 245-35-20 on a 20x9
The back tires will be 285-30-20 on a 20x11

I actually bought 2 more AD's this week. Already started on the 49.

54 I got Saturday.

And the 49 a few hours later. The guy thought his crappy sub frame job was worth about 1000 bux, so I told him he could have it back! saved some money hahaha he took it back home with him

I'm looking forward to seeing how the wheels fit. I'll be going with detroit steel wheels on mine as well and would like to do a staggered set up like that.

This. Ive been through your thread before but can't remember, what rear axle are you running? 4x4 s10?

Layedoutsonoma91 01-23-2016 11:57 PM

Re: You guessed it, 1950 s10 swap.

I hope they fit too.
I have a 4x4 blazer rear with disc brakes, may have to swap it with a 2wd blazer disc to fit those wheels. I got 20x11 for the back with a 4.5 backspace.
They should be in this week!

Re: You guessed it, 1950 s10 swap.

I've enjoyed this thread. I'm just beginning a 1948 5 window and am trying to determine which direction to go with frame/subframe. The truck I bought came with a camaro clip on stock frame but I like the stance you have on the S10. I'm trying to gather the necessary steps to fab the s10 for the AD.

Layedoutsonoma91 01-24-2016 02:46 AM

Re: You guessed it, 1950 s10 swap.

I just started on a 49 5 window im going to put on an s10 frame. Still looking for the donor s10. I would highly recommend an s10 swap. I am very glad I did mine. I didnt use one of the kits, i just made my own mounts. I have a lot of details about how i did it in the first 2 pages.

motown 01-24-2016 02:53 PM

Re: You guessed it, 1950 s10 swap.

Thanks for that input. I have been reading. I'm sure I'll have more questions... Is there a thread or step by step list of what has to be done to make the s10 compatible?

Layedoutsonoma91 01-24-2016 03:06 PM

Re: You guessed it, 1950 s10 swap.

I mainly just did it as I went. Wasn't too bad. Just put the cab and fenders together dropped them on the frame, and centered the front wheels. Made everything else from that point.

motown 01-24-2016 03:16 PM

Re: You guessed it, 1950 s10 swap.

So is shortening the frame and mounts the majority of fab?

Layedoutsonoma91 01-24-2016 03:21 PM

Re: You guessed it, 1950 s10 swap.

You only need to shorten the wheelbase of the frame 5 inches, only if you have a extended cab frame. I used a long bed frame. So I cut 6 inches of the very front and 6 inches off the very back. But nothing in the center. I made mounts for the front of the cab, but reused the stock rear cab mounts. They worked great. I had to make the core support shorter and flat on the bottom to work with the frame. Over all i think my cab is 6 inches from frame to the floor mount.
