Re: 1941 project fenix
tackled the VA system today. its the mini system with defrost
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psoieljfos.jpg had to make my own brackets, the ones they sent were pretty flimsy, but that is my only complaint so far. in their defense its a universal system, you should expect to make some brackets http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps2bhkcslf.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...pslby3ax2h.jpg they even sent grommets for the heater hoses, good guys VA http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psv21mbmua.jpg I put a layer of peel and seal on the firewall after buttoning up all the holes I didnt want and drilling the ones I did. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...pssst2na5x.jpg started hooking up wiring and had to find new cruise release and brake switches. something tells me I am missing some sort of bracket on the brake arm, neither push button reaches the arm and the brake switch wouldnt hit it even in a t bone. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psj7ojypnp.jpg anyone have a picture of the missing bracket? when I got the truck the brake switch was broken and some of the parts were laying in the passenger floor board. |
Re: 1941 project fenix
found it, gigamanx has a great picture. mine definitely did not have this bracket on it

Another nice cab :) Good job on recovering the #'s. Your VA unit fits in there quite nicely.

Re: 1941 project fenix
story time!
so there is something I call "the joedoh rule" or more accurately "the dumbass constant". its like murphys law only more intimately painful to me, because it involves finding the very limit of my patience while examining how accurately I can shoot myself in the foot. take this example. I have been trying to schedule time with LD2 (loving daughter 2) because her mini cooper is knocking and whining, the serpentine belt is the suspect. she has more important things like work and the boyfriend and things she calls "places" when we ask where she is going. so it breaks one day, and I tell her the time to schedule with me is over, use some of that work money and call a tow to a mechanic of her choosing and have them fix it, all part of growing up you see. if you cant take my gentle prodding to help you fix it preemptively in the driveway you can foot the incurred higher costs of the emergency. essentially "a lack of planning on your part isnt an emergency on my part". but I am not without compassion, so I offer the slattern (my cheapo saturn that just runs and runs) so she is not without transportation. well, she flattens the rear tire and the spare according to her boyfriend "has something wrong with it". I go to change the tire and pick up the car and promptly break two studs. oops. I pick up 4 new studs and slather the remaining lug nuts with penetrant. I get the drum off and replace the two broken studs, better see if all the nuts come off easy though since I will need a tire on that corner, and I break one more stud. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psk0ipipl5.jpg thats after pulling it apart a second time. oh wait there is more. remember my missing bracket on the pedal? I went looking through older pictures, in fact this one on the first page of the thread. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...pst0s1be6y.jpg see it? http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psp68lr1xz.jpg sheesh. I have looked in the garage, to no avail. tomorrow a trip to the salvage is required. I also attempted to run the heater lines, I had retapped the broken connector on the intake but for the life of me couldnt find the suction side. looking at older pictures, it goes to the radiator. so luckily there is a plugged port on the water pump. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psnctxztvi.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps0lbkfcud.jpg got all the lines run, had to move the lines to keep them from kinking. I read about a guy who used copper pipe bent to the correct angles and a heat gun to reshape straight hoses into custom heater hose, I will try that next time I think. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...pste12f2wv.jpg found more problems to solve. this is probably from the engine fire (project name as a reminder!) http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psyhwjkwhp.jpg tomorrow I seal the floor up for good! no more work needed under there. I have to straighten the power steering line so it fits the front clip and then I can put the front clip on too. |
Re: 1941 project fenix
Joe
I read an article in the Classic Truck in the last few issues, they were showing how to do custom radiator hoses. In the article they stated that because copper is soft and that it is prone to cracking if use in conjunction with antifreeze. The only metal that they recommend is Stainless Steel. Just thought you might like know so that you can do some research on the material that you end up using, just in case! Strong Work Keep on keepin on NC |
Re: 1941 project fenix
I wasnt talking about using copper for the lines, you bend the copper to the desired shape and then pull your rubber lines over it and use the heat gun inside and out to set the rubber lines. I did it today with the lower rad hose, it didnt fit over the water pump outlet and so I stuck a 34MM socket in the hose and used the heat gun to set it to the larger size, worked good!
did a bunch of little stuff, got the alignment set at 1/8" toe out and centered the wheels and steering wheel. pulled all the steering parts to paint. I did get the steering lines modified and hooked up. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...pszulxhgip.jpg fenix shifts! my modified linkage works perfectly. I picked up a cotter hairpin and a washer, if you remember it was hooked with a bread tie when I pulled it apart. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psmq6rhltm.jpg ugh. more new stuff. this donor was short on just about everything. learn this lesson, buy the best donor you can, people. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psgqy00zgp.jpg the rad is ready to be hooked up. the bubble flare to barb fittings for the transmission lines were only FORTY ^&*^(*& DOLLARS. sheesh. next time I will just cut them off and flare the end and use clamps. chipping away at all this stuff, the two steps forward three steps back with all the new repairs hasnt licked me yet. |
Re: 1941 project fenix
man you're not kidding, all the little stuff is the time and pocket killer
|
Re: 1941 project fenix
I dont know where to start, I walked out today and this was on the floor of the cab.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...pssg3p972v.jpg I actually just sat down and looked at it for about a half hour. I didnt have anything on the floor that I wasnt using, and just two weeks ago it was completely empty while I built the missing piece of floor. divine intervention. I took the hint and installed it http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psz2xsnyam.jpg I put the steering back together and yep, you guessed it, problems arose http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psrzgp7lvd.jpg the shifter rod was in a position that the set screw on the steering joint would hit it. only when it was in park though, so I considered just leaving it. who screws the steering wheel back and forth in park? but then I reconsidered, even though the chances of it happening were small and there was plenty of give in the linkage to let it bump by, I wouldnt want that to happen. so I pulled the rod and shot myself in the foot by dropping it and having the bushing fly off to kingdom come. after 10 minutes modifying the rod (just added a kink) and 40 minutes searching for the bushing, I was done. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...pse75yyd8o.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psjjwqrnze.jpg no joke, I havent ever seen that little bracket until today. |
Re: 1941 project fenix
That is crazy how it just showed up. You should paint it bright orange so if you ever take it off again you won't loose it lol.
|
Re: 1941 project fenix
I didnt take it off the FIRST time. the guy I got the truck from was in the middle of replacing the column and gave up, never finished. I had my wife follow me home because the brake switch was broken.
I didnt know that bracket was even needed because the other pedal bracket I bought from salvage didnt have one either. I looked at gigamanx pictures and that is the first time I ever saw it till I noticed it on the floor of the s10 cab in the early pictures from stripping the cab. its given me a big pause, no kidding. |
Re: 1941 project fenix
I am sure you already know this, but the set screws on the steering u joints should have jam nuts on them. They are easy to forget but important that you don't.

Re: 1941 project fenix
the 47-55 battery box is slightly larger than the 41-46, so my s10 battery just barely didnt fit. I could have just bought a new box, or taken one from the parts pile, especially since the one hold down bolt is broken, but waste not want not. I drilled out the rivets and gave the extra 3/8" I was missing. yes you can still get to the oil fill, its not as close as it looks.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...pssr89oiah.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psaainhlw9.jpg cables reach too, thats a nice surprise. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3erseqi6.jpg more mr fixit, the drivers door check mounts were broken and the check was missing, but I found it in the kick panel washing out the truck. I fixed up the mount and woop http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psan0ocn4c.jpg all the underhood and dash wiring is complete now except the HVAC, which is pre wired anyway, just need the big 12v tie in. well except the cruise switch, I need to find a pinout here, the guy bought a blazer column and only half installed it so obviously the wiring is slightly different on the cruise switch. if anyone has done the wiring change before maybe shoot me the info. truck side http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psug27qpk2.jpg column side http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psxjv7qwyz.jpg my wife is going to a work thing for a week so it will just be me and the beeps, probably no progress in that time except what I get done tomorrow. |
Re: 1941 project fenix
Just went through all 9 pages...whew, great progress!

Re: 1941 project fenix
thanks, I wish this one would have gone faster, seems like I spent an awful lot of time this year using my days off for stuff my wife wants to do, but hey, sometimes you are the windshield and sometimes the bug.
I have said a few times the guy I bought the truck from was in the middle of installing a new/used column. the bottom bearing seemed loose, there are three slots that I thought engaged the plastic bearing retainer but there were no tabs on it, it kept sliding out. I thought that a bit weird so I looked at columns online and found their is a cup and wire clip that should be present, but was not. I called around to the auto parts stores and no one had it in stock, the dealer wanted 77 bucks for the two parts. It occurred to me that lots of jeeps used this exact same steering column, in wranglers and cherokees in the 90s, so maybe a jeep shop would have this part. I called the local jeepers and explained what I was looking for, of course they had it in stock (I said 1992 cherokee), new bearing included for 24 bucks! here is the part number if anyone needs it http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psghticygn.jpg I went to install just the two pieces I was missing but for giggles pulled off the original "bearing", quoted because it is just slick plastic and two rubber seals. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psyyczlv1b.jpg it looked pretty used and well, I had the new parts already, so http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psm7oxcdvm.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...psmdx4i5bc.jpg lock nuts relocked. maybe I can get the front end put on tomorrow. |

I got the front clip on and the rad in. I have been on contract more lately which is good for the purse but not for the projects. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4206/...03cf3376_h.jpgIMG_6573 by Joe Doh, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4255/...98636376_h.jpgIMG_6582 by Joe Doh, on Flickr I needed the bed from the back yard, luckily my wife was home so I went ahead and did it myself. work smarter not harder, these dollies have paid for themselves several times over. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4264/...22bbc8d9_h.jpgIMG_6596 by Joe Doh, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4237/...43357032_h.jpgIMG_6597 by Joe Doh, on Flickr wouldnt start without some gas in the TBI, and even then wouldnt stay running. found a ground off, then still no joy in mudville. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4283/...dc4974a3_z.jpgalmost by Joe Doh, on Flickr got this tank from a "running truck that just got wrecked". sigh. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4288/...0798613c_h.jpg52148113169__C62D2E1E-7776-46FA-85F7-80E7E7BE0C08 by Joe Doh, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4214/...7593a71c_h.jpgIMG_6598 by Joe Doh, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4214/...26905816_h.jpgIMG_6599 by Joe Doh, on Flickr ahh much better https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4216/...5fd861cb_z.jpgfinally by Joe Doh, on Flickr I got this donor from the guy who bought the 65. he came by today to tell me I was imagining all the parts I had to replace and how good the condition was of this truck. (just kidding, although he was surprised at everything that needed replaced) he brought the 65 I sold him for a visit. he had just finished the interior. for those not aware, this is a 65 C10 big window shortbed I put on a 98 S10 4 cylinder chassis. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4257/...77b11202_h.jpgIMG_6602 by Joe Doh, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4265/...6be7d7c1_h.jpgIMG_6603 by Joe Doh, on Flickr still some work to do today but working on the fuel pump in 100 degrees wore me out a little. Re: 1941 project fenix
back yard looks great! 65 looks killer too. You use the airjax previously know as little larry valves? goin that route for 51'. keep grinding, that thing will be on the road oh so soon.

The 65' looks awesome! Are you going to change out the gas tank or just the sender/pump?

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4262/...2dd3384f_k.jpgIMG_9191.JPG by Joe Doh, on Flickr I replaced the pump and strainer. I tried to find a complete setup in town but only one place had it and it was $259 for precision brand, compare that to $65 on rockauto. so I bought just the pump and strainer and you can see it in the pictures, as well as the video of how well it runs right after it. flickr doesnt put the play button on the videos so I guess I have to say "its a video" from now on. I replaced the tank earlier in the build because it was so rusty, and the fuel pump had the same issue. the guy said he wrecked the truck and pulled the tank and sold it to me. seems like it sat a while longer than he said. I did a little more last night, it was pretty hot but I mocked up the seats. its a little tight in there, but I am not building a winnebago either so its to be expected. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4325/...8be17b20_h.jpgIMG_6609 by Joe Doh, on Flickr seats are 89 lebaron that I had recovered in oxblood. |
Re: 1941 project fenix
well mother flipper. I tried to get the truck to idle but it would not. some of it is the small amount of bad gas, I added 5 gal fresh but still there was about a gallon of trash in there. I added some seafoam and a gallon of xylene to combat the problem but still no good idle. one plug wire had a squirrel chew so I did plugs wires cap rotor and IAC, still no idle. I didnt need a noid light to see the drivers injector was barely squirting so I resigned myself to a rebuild of the TBI

Re: 1941 project fenix
hey thanks! that was a really nice compliment
turned it around under its own power, almost went for a blast on the dirt road but the hood isnt bolted down and there isnt an air cleaner yet so probably best to stick to the yard for now. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4327/...429b7906_b.jpgIMG_6637 by Joe Doh, on Flickr de-floored the bed and trimmed it slightly, just wanted to see where the wheel arch center is in relation to the bed and back of the cab. remember that this is a 3/4 ton so it originally came with a 47-55 long bed and fenders, so I bought a 1/2 ton short bed and 41-46 fenders. the s10 long wheelbase is a little longer than the 41 short wheelbase so I wanted to see if I could get it close enough to look right. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4324/...6994457b_b.jpgIMG_6638 by Joe Doh, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4320/...e4aed7e5_b.jpgIMG_6639 by Joe Doh, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4294/...442aff5f_b.jpgIMG_6640 by Joe Doh, on Flickr obviously the bed sides hit the tires because the s10 axle is narrower, I could have thrown on some spacers but I like the way the wheels look in there currently so I decided to hit northern tool and pick up a single 10" wide trailer fender. when I got it home I cut it in half, then marked and plasma'd the bedsides https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4322/...c6fd7bae_b.jpgIMG_6645 by Joe Doh, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4320/...3108933d_b.jpgIMG_6647 by Joe Doh, on Flickr I ran out of welding gas building the seat mounts so while I was out I stopped for a new bottle. turns out they were out of 88cu ft bottles so they loaned me a 24 so I could keep welding. silly little thing! https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4299/...4f733b8a_b.jpgIMG_6648 by Joe Doh, on Flickr but I got them tacked in and the bed mocked up, looks super dope! https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4313/...d4d4f742_b.jpgIMG_6651 by Joe Doh, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4291/...2006159c_b.jpgIMG_6660 by Joe Doh, on Flickr that oxblood color interior is my absolute favorite. Re: 1941 project fenix
What did those seats come out of again? Look fantastic!
|
Re: 1941 project fenix
they are from an 89 or 90 lebaron, I made a nice drawing of what I wanted the upholstery to look like and dropped it and the seats off at the interior shop and they blithely ignored it. blithely may not be strong enough, they pointedly ignored it.
anyway. got the bed standing on its own. looks nice! after these pictures I added a third cross bar at the rear. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4319/...a19254e8_b.jpgIMG_6722873 by Joe Doh, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4299/...aa220ae6_b.jpgIMG_67672 by Joe Doh, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4328/...23810ec9_b.jpgIMG_6665 by Joe Doh, on Flickr I had bought a set of bolts and nuts thinking I would slot the rectangle tube for the bolts and weld them in pointing down, so that the studs would find the holes instead of the bed slithering around trying to line everything up. well I couldnt find the bolts but I DID find the 1/2" all thread I bought when doing the motor move. I cut some chunks and drilled the bottom hole big enough for the all thread and the top hole just a 1/4" hole, then I tacked the all thread on the bottom and welded up the hole to the all thread on top. works perfect and this way I dont worry about the slots weakening the tube. I also raised the seat risers (rised the risers..) in the front two inches. now the seats are more comfortable. |
Re: 1941 project fenix
Nice work!! It's so satisfying when they move on there own, even if it only in and out of the garage. I had Lebaron seats in my Jeep, most comfortable seats I ever had.
|
Re: 1941 project fenix
yeah I want to uncork it but there are things to do.
the seat riser risers worked well, as a mock up. unfortunately welding an 18" long butt joint turns metal into a pretzel no matter how careful you are. so I popped out some new fronts https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4305/...6ae5def5_b.jpgIMG_6669 by Joe Doh, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4295/...54f6d5fd_b.jpgIMG_6670 by Joe Doh, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4310/...66d4d807_b.jpgIMG_6675 by Joe Doh, on Flickr and because I raised the front I needed to raise the back, so a couple more plasma cuts and https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4304/...5ae71bd6_b.jpgIMG_6676 by Joe Doh, on Flickr I like using the box break method a lot now, makes it super easy instead of joining small pieces but needs a bit of forethought https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4298/...f763b221_b.jpgIMG_6677 by Joe Doh, on Flickr bed is ready for wood, but I need to roll it out and cut down the filler neck, now that I know the max height of the filler. maybe tomorrow I will stick the seats in too. |
