I don't like the way the torque converter sounded so I ordered a new one also. A minor set back but this way I know it will be right. So tomorrow I will pull the brake set up off the truck and start to pull the transmission back, I will not take the transmission all the way out of the truck. I did this before with the flex plate, I should have installed new torque converter then. But money was tight, so now I am paying for it in labor.
Still waiting for my other two wheels to come in. they should be here tomorrow I hope.

I don't know why your project sounds so much like mine. If I haven't done the same task three times I know it's not done.

I ordered a new torque converter and a new chrome master cly and brake booster and proportioning valve with lines all chrome. I also got the front and rear seals, I know I don't want to do this again for a 10.00 seal. It wasn't leaking but why not.
There was only a few dollars difference between the chrome and the cast iron. So I always say Chrome will get you home.My parts will be here on the 14th of this month. So a little down time will do me good. I finally got my other two wheels so I will mount them to the tire tomorrow. I hope nothing goes wrong.

I got my tires mounted on the new rims today. I am not going to mount them on the truck until I get the transmission torque converter and the brake booster back together.
I just don't want to have them in my way at this point. Dave I will call you in the morning thanks george

Thanks a lot. I am just waiting for parts. I should have it running on it's own power by the third week of this month. Keep your fingers crossed.

thanks David and Bryan for you comments. I finished the install on the brake combo today. I also installed the torque converter, that was a piece of cake. I mounted the four wheels and tires on the truck. They look sweet. I will post pictures tomorrow on that. I will finish button up a few little thing not done today. Like installing the drive shaft and bleeding the brakes. I hope tomorrow or Thursday I will take it down to the front end shop and do a alignment. And guys I hope that is all I need to drive the beast. keep your fingers crossed. George

I got to shorten the drive shaft a little. I got a company that is going to come by and pick it up this morning. About 1 1/2 inches I figured, but the drive shaft guy will measure it and let me know. George

Re: 1968

I got the driveshaft taken care of today. It will be done by the third May. The front yoke where it goes into the transmission was a little bad where the seal ride and he is going to polish that area up also. I enjoy working with people that knows what they are doing. Keep your fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong.

Xeen 04-22-2015 07:41 AM

Re: 1968

Wait I must be confused, the guy told you he will have your driveshaft done on the 3rd of May? WHAT? The local shop here in Topeka 4x4 Land has same day service with no wait AND they only charge $80 for a shorten and ballance, take it somewhere else.

I had the wrong yoke also. I needed the short yoke and I had the long yoke. I couldn't find a short yoke. So he is going to shorten polish the yoke also. He is the only person in our county that does drive shafts and he is so busy. Unless, I wanted to drive to Ocala and that is over a hour each way. So I am going to go with him. I just didn't want to drive there and back two times. George

I am out of town at this time. I went to see My sister a hour south of me. I have to wait until the 1st anyway. he told me that it would be ready the first not the third. Driveshaft.

Thanks guy. I am almost at the end of my build. I think I will be done with the heavy stuff this month. Then I will drive the old girl around a little. After I get the drive shaft installed I want to take her down to the front end shop.

gdavis 05-02-2015 10:45 PM

Re: 1968

Today The driveshaft guy came and delivered the drive shaft. I installed the driveshaft and it fit like a glove. So I started the truck and put three quarts of transmission fluid in the transmission. I still need one more to top it off. I added brake fluid and I was going to bleed the brakes but my neighbor was busy so I put it off until Monday. After I bleed the system I will take it to the front end shop for some attention on the front end. Then it will be ready for a test drive.

I take it the cam break in went well, and the engine checks out "OK" after the rebuild?

Hey George you can make a free Youtube account and put a folder load the engine running video into it and just post a link here, make sure the privacy setting is public.

yea the engine was great. I used my old torque converter and it made a little noise so I replaced it with a new one. As far as I know everything is aok. sounds great.

Re: 1968

Today I started to bleed the brakes and everything was going alone great until I got to the drivers side and the wheel cly. started to leak, So I will have to pull the wheel back off and see what the hey. Everything was new so go figure. If it is can break it will. This truck is one thing after another.

Re: 1968

George it's probably just something silly that will take you a few minutes to fix, but if not just replace it and forget about it.

The plunger rod came out that's all. Got the brakes bleed and it pulled out of the shop area for the first time on it's own power. what a thrill. I got a appointment at the front end shop tomorrow at 9.00 for the front end alligment. After that it will be road ready. Here is a few pictures of the truck after a good bath.

The pickup looks great George, I especially like the blacked out grill trim and headlight rings paired with the blacked out rims it gives it a menacing look which stands in direct contrast to all the chrome and stainless that gives it that beautiful classic look, very nice.

thanks Brian. I had it all orange and then I went with the black. It gave the truck a mean look.
