Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
All I did today was run ERR on another bracket and then soak it (along with the hood latch) in Evaporust. I hope to get those derusted and repainted within days.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
I replaced the rubber fuel line on my 400 sbc with 3/8" steel line instead. I have a late model serpentine setup so had to snake it between the timing cover and water pump which took a while to get the bends right. I still have a couple of short rubber connectors for the fuel filter but feel much safer without all that rubber touching the motor.

i had a blast yesterday and ended up with "some" clean parts that are ready for epoxy.
these dang latch&catches are kicking my butt. this is the forth time i blasted them and tried the eastwood metal blacking solution. each time they turn out like this. they look black and great right outa the solution but by the time they dry this is what i end up with. funny cause i've had good luck useing this stuff on other small parts. time too try something else on them. |

All I have done so far today has been to restart ERR on the hood latch and I wire wheeled the last of the rust off of the triangular fender-to-core support bracket. It's badly pitted but serviceable. |
Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
I did a little more today.
I figured out the 1967 cowling I have isn't up to my liking to go onto my truck. :-( I also got all the rust off of the fender to core support bracket (it has lots of pits!) and coated it with NAPA Rust Treatment. This stuff is really just a primer so I'll paint it tomorrow. http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/...psmufhmde5.jpg http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/...psunrntlmw.jpg |
Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Took a wire wheel and stripper wheel to the bed floor, removing surface rust and dried glue/paint spills and preparing it for blasting. Gonna do the wheel wells tonight. Bed sides and back panel are already done, so I'm almost ready to hang plastic and start blasting.

I finally did something a bit more "normal" perhaps for this forum (instead of electrolysis  ). I drove 6 hours round trip today and picked up my media blasted and epoxy-primed OEM core support, NOS fender, and NOS outer rocker panels.
I just got in and I am tired! http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1a3lyqhz.jpg |

I installed the newly rebuilt carburetor (7029214) that my wife surprised me with on Father's Day. It was from one of the professional quadrajet builders and I chose not to go with the show plating. Apparantly, she has been in contact with him for awhile trying to answer questions. She told me what she was up to and that I had to speak with him. When she told me I was shocked. He said he would have it finished by father's day.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
On those door latches , all you needs do is make up a dilute Phosphoric Acid & water solution , when you're finished de rusting thrm , rinse them off and quickly dip them into the Phosphorus solution , it will *instantly* prevent the flash rusting you're struggling with now .
DO NOT use undiluted Phosphoric acid ! you can dip your fingers into it yes but it's not good for the steel . NO alloy / pot metal parts either ! . Brass , like completely rusted closed carby jets , will come out looking new as will old rusty chrome bumper bolts but pot metal or alloy things will be ruined . The best part is : you can strain and jug this solution for years of re use , making it very co$t effective . Nice to see all the hard works going on here , Spring must have sprung although heavy rain storms have dogged us all the way across America . I am surprised to see many folks simply pull off the road and stop , emergency flashers going instead of simply slowing down to safe speeds . The big rigs often flash past us in less than 1/4 mile visibility going 85 + MPH . 71CHEVYSHORTBED402 : have you tried a wire wheel for rust removal ? I go through them like crazy (buy by the box full) and have worn out $25 Harbor Freight drill motors but I like the resulting clean bare metal and no chemical burns . The (in)famous Rochester Qudrajet carby is in fact a sterling carby , you'll need to upgrade the fuel inlet and jet well plugs so they don't weep/seep/leak and cause engine fires but once repaired and properly set up they never ever go out of adjustment and provide good drivability plus power when you stamp the foot feed and open up the secondaries . |

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Finally got around to dragging the original bench to my '72 out of the back yard, into the garage, and onto a stand so I could remove all the ancient vinyl and foam. The driver side bolts attaching the back to the base are rusted, so I'll have to drill them out tonight.
A bit of time with the wire wheel on the drill motor, maybe a quick blast with the media blaster when I do the bed this weekend, spray with some NAPA anti-rust black, then into storage until I get to the point of re-upholstering it. |

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
I like the affect 9teen69.
This week: Thanks to Frank I located the rear window moldings. I'm still searching for great "paint separator" moldings, should anyone have a lead. Less window frame rubber, that's all that's needed for a complete exterior. Polished the bed brace bolts up. I may have come to a nice system for prepping small parts. 1. Optional, depends on condition of paint: Soak in paint thinner for a bit, maybe half a day. 2. Soak in white vinegar for a day, two if you need it. 3. Polish them up (wire bushes) as you wash using baking soda & water. Maybe soak in soda solution afterwards, for a bit. 4. Rinse. 5. Soak them in WD-40 for a day. 6. Wipe them down. I'm no metal expert for certain, and I'm not sure WD-40 is the answer, but it seems oil for these small parts is a good thing. Removed the paint from the differential. Paint removal wise, all that's left under the bed are the drive line and rear axle. Nice to find there's no rust. A little surface rust on the frame, and tight areas around the differential, but all comes off with ease using white vinegar. |

blasted the front bumper and front side of my caps(backs are allready done). bumper had alot of stone chip pits in it but its in awesome shape for a oe peice. so i put a few coats of 2k high build over the epoxy. the caps got the same treatment these will end up being painted the same design as a 68 cap but with the the argent silver being 526 white and the black being 503 green. just for a differnt look. i'll still have a set of nice oe 67 caps it'll be cool too change them up every now and then |

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Started media-blasting my bed parts. Using a $50 HFT blaster. Once I resolved the humidity issues (3 air filters in series does well enough), did a pretty good job. Would be better with a larger air compressor, but I can't run anything bigger (no 220v). So, frequent breaks so the compressor can catch up.
But it's doing great at getting rid of the surface rust. So, I got that going for me, which is nice. |

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II
Over the weekend, I replaced the water pump (made little difference, must be the radiator needs replacing...temps just a bit too high. I was thinking the impeller may have corrosion and causing cavitation. A new water pump is peace of mind anyway). I also rebuilt the door hinges on the driver door. Plastic bushing were worn totally out. hinges now have virtually zero play. But, I am having trouble adjusting door strike of all things. before, door closed relatively easy...especially if I lift door slightly when closing. Now, it takes a slam and sometime bangs hard. May be that latch is wearing out. I have the strike adjusted per service manual. Next is to play with strike position to see result. Just too damn hot and tired to figure it out on Sunday. Getting those hinges off and then readjusting the door is a PITA.

Today, RESTED, because yesterday, I drove down to NC to meet Panel Deland, and I got to sit in his panel! :-) :-)
He also hit me with some great advice about what I have to look forward to and he gave me a cowl in exchange for helping him put his hood back on. I then went to see a friend and so, I didn't leave until midnight. I slept about an hour at a VA rest stop and got home at 4 AM. I was so tired I slept till 6 AM in the car, in the driveway! |
