Getting the hinge on w/o scratching the paint is the easy part. Putting the spring on and not damaging the paint with what I want to know.

Did you adjust the hinge location so that the hood closes correctly? If so, did that scratch any of the paint around the hinge on the inner fender?

I figured y'all might ask. It took 2 people to do it, so we didn't get any pics during the process. I have not had the hood on yet, so I haven't done any adjustments yet. Here is the tool that I use to do the springs. I put the foot where it is in the pic. I worked the bar and Shannon worked the chain to keep control of everything. It works really nice, but my headlight mount panel was removed.

Me too.

No progress on my side of the fence tonight. I went over to help Shannon set his cab on his frame.

Still in jury duty. :waah: They said expect a long day tommorrow 8 a.m.-midnight. Trying not to run into the weekend. I did meet another jury member that had some mouldings and emblems for old chevys. He said he had no use for them and brought them to me today. I saw a couple 3100 emblems in the bucket. I was hoping to get a pic, but ran out of time.

Shannon and I did get the 55 running last night. Just have to fine tune the timing and carb adjustment.

Hi Alan, Again Nice work.
Reading your thread again starting at post 2370, during the mock-up of the fuel filler door, What year and model donated the green fuel door? Was that a random choice or is a perfect fit of the body lines Also what O.D. is the filler pipe off the tank? I bought a RCI 17 gallon cell from summit and will be modifying the fill pipe to turn out as I would like to have a outside fill door. Your metal skills are outstanding , I will have to recruit a body man relative . Thanks-- bubba

Thanks Bubba, it was a random choice of square doors. The round ones didn't jive with the body lines IMO. I believe it came from a 99 ford ranger, but not 100% sure. The OD of the filler pipe on the tank is 1.5", but I will need to remeasure unless Shannon chimes in. I know he remembers. I'm concerned that the fill pipe from the door is a little small. I forsee splash back when filling. Maybe not, the fill pipe will be vented so maybe everything will work out.

No progress tonight working on the 55.

Will do. ;)

Shannon and I got the rear brakes done last night. Had to redo the Rt side again, because I failed to read the instructions that reminded me the right hand thread went on the left and the left hand thread self adjuster went on the right drum. I had two new ones, but they were both right hand thread, that's why it didn't even cross my mind.

Alan, I love digital cameras and take lots of pictures before I tear stuff like brakes apart then I can look to see how they go back together if they will be apart for some time. Then I read the manual .
I found on my truck's rear brakes the shoes were installed wrong by P.O. and the shorter shoe was in the rear position on the passenger side.

I wish that I had taken a lot of pics during tear down, but I didn't. Now I take too many. haha When I put the brakes on the 55 someone on the forum pointed out to me that had the shoes on backwards. I love all the great help we get on this forum. It had been a while since had had dones brakes. I used to do them a lot for people in the service at the hobby shop on base. It's been 20 years since I had done brakes.

Call it beginners luck or what ever, but I got the fan shroud made today. I couldn't have ask for anything better. As we all know I have limited experience with custom fabrication. To me this was complex due to exact measurements. I don't know if I would have the same luck if I made another. Here are the steps I took.

The sheet of aluminum

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02331.jpg

What I had in mind.

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02333.jpg

The layout

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02335.jpg

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02337.jpg

The piece cut out and corners notched.

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02340.jpg

The first set of bends

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02341.jpg

I used these vice grips to tweak a couple corners that didn't bend to a true 90*

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02342.jpg

Ran out of time today. This is where it is at now. Still need to make the top and bottom caps and cut the hole for the fan then test fit. Hope it clears the engine.

Thanks Taylor

Shannon came over and helped me get a little more done. Worked on getting the bottom cap fabbed up and fan mounted.

Here's the deminsions of the bottom cap

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02346.jpg

Done and installed

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02347.jpg

I lined up the fan assy and traced the outside of it then used this big compass to scribe a line 3/4" to the inside.

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02350.jpg

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02351.jpg

Cut opening for the fan and drilled the mount holes.

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02353.jpg

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02354.jpg

This is far as we got last night. Discovered that the upper radiator hold downs interfer with the front shields that bolt between the radiator support and the headlight mount panel.

Yeah I checked this morning. Surprisingly they were different and even more shocking I did have them in correctly. Which normally if something can be reversed I usually get them reversed. So I had the reverse threads (LH thread) on the Right brake and the conventional (RH thread) on the Left brake.

Back a couple of months ago when I put the brakes together I may have been paying attention but when I read your post it caught my attention b/c I just didn't remember them being threaded differently. Never hurts to double check.

Oh by the way your build thread is awesome and helpful. I've back read up to page 40 or so... like the videos.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

I riveted the lower supports in place.

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02362.jpg

Secured the wire

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02363.jpg

Top cap bent and installed.

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02365.jpg

The upper clamps are off center because I'm trying to decide which way to install them. I like the one on the right because it mounts more to the end of the radiator, but will have to modify the shield. The one on the left will be easy to do, but it seams like it is too close to the middle. I'm leaning to the one on the Left.

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02366.jpg

Any suggestions for the lower radiator hose? The cooler lines are out of place because they aren't hooked up.

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC02367.jpg

Got the filler neck welded. It looks like it is really close to the floor, but there is room to accomendate the hose and clamp.

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...d/DSC02369.jpg

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...d/DSC02370.jpg

Started laying out a pattern for the panel inside the bed arounf the filler neck.

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...d/DSC02373.jpg

Oops, I messed up

I say the one on the right. Assume you spent 5 yrs restoring the truck and keep it for 15 years after that. If you need to spend 8 hrs modifiying things to make it work, that is 0.45% of your time was spent making it the way you feel looks better.

How true.

Here is another fuel neck out of a late model ford super duty. It has a round door just haven't cut the door out of the bed yet. The tube is a lot longer than the one I had.

Hey Alan,

That fan shroud is so nice it makes me want to do mine over, keep the inspiration coming.

I had a tough lower radiator hose situation on my LS swap. I used a stainless tubing 90 degree elbow and two silicone adapters. It looks like you could use one elbow and two straight adapters. Just something to think about.
