we left NAS North Island in this one headed for Kuwait.. during the flight brief, the young airman warned us about air sickness during a scheduled in flight refueling scheduled over the east coast..

I asked him if I could go to the cockpit to watch and he said no one had ever asked him but he would find out.. few minutes later he returned and said the captain would allow only one in the cockpit and I was it :)

4-5 hours later the airman woke me up an took me up front and they let me sit in the forward facing seat behind the pilot! can't even describe how awesome it was to experience the approach and fueling boom connection from the cockpit of a c5.. they made several approaches and breakaways for training so I got to see it a few times..

but then..... something went wrong and one of the probe components broke! I was suddenly escorted back to my seat in the back and we made an emergency landing in Gander Newfoundland :canada:

we had to debark and the kind folks there called some of the concession staff in and they opened up the terminal for us, can you beat that for hospitality?!

after a few hours - back on the road... only to stop in Rota Spain and break down there for three days

been half-way around the world a couple of times in a C5 but never flew in a c17

fascinating plane, even if the passenger seats face backwards and no windows LoL..

yes sir,i'm not surprised they opened up in Gander for you.wonderful people.on 911 when US airspace was closed,i forget the exact number but something like 265 planes coming accross the pond, diverted to Gander,50 or 60 made it Halifax and so on and so on.Gander has something like 7000 or so folks live there and there was something like 5000 or 6000 people stuck on airplanes.the folks there went out to the airport and brought people home, put them up in makeshift dorms at schools, let them use phone, took them shopping for supplies, whatever they needed.wonderful people looking after people at a horrible time.there's a broadway play called 'Comes From Away" cause that's what Newfoundlanders call about people not from there, they're come from away.it's a tremendous story,my wife, who is a Newfoundlander, took her mother to Toronto a couple years ago,to see the play.very emotional.

I like all the pics and stories, but in particularly enjoying the plane pictures and info. If I'm not mistaken, there're six or seven of those at Boeing field right now.

I'll play- So, in Apr. 91 we're leaving Bahrain after Desert Storm. We get dropped off in an open kinda domed cover thing at the end of the runway and we're all laying on our seabags, waiting. Off down the way there's a C-5 with the nose open, loading up. Huh, that's kinda neat. Pretty soon, they close up the nose, some official dudes do the walk around, and they start getting in the side door. Then it starts to move. Huh, cool, we'll get to see that big mother take off. Then it taxis to the far end of the runway and points DIRECTLY AT US. Big blast of smoke out the back, here it comes. Bigger, bigger, BIGGER, and still on the tires. Then the nose comes up, still coming! About the time you're fixin' to run, it finally gets off the ground and starts clawing for altitude. I kid you not, it didn't clear the hut thing by 50 feet. BOOM! Dirt falling outta the rafters, we about crapped. Too awesome. Man, them things are big.

Again, great stories and pictures. Experiences we stateside, non-service folks can't hardly imagine. For some reason it's exceedingly cool to me that those planes are drive-through. Talk about keeping the show on the road, nobody even has to back up...

My rental home is about 10 miles from Stewart air national guard base . The transports fly into there regularly. Just before Desert storm I knew something was going on I was still living there at the time . Instead of two or three flying over a day it was three or four an hour . Things look they are going to drop out of the sky as they make the approach but it's just because their so low and big

Ya we got some rain and wind we had no power for 24 hrs . This is the road to New Paltz my route to my rental got some water in the basement but nothing damaged as it was in the laundry furnace area so it’s unfinished. I had to go 30 + miles to get around the flooded area. The bridge to New Paltz over the Wallkill river was under 2+ feet of water. The river is about 1/4 of a mile away from where I was

Colossal Cargo: C-5M Super Galaxy vs An-124 Ruslan

C-5M Super Galaxy
Since its first flight on June 30, 1968, the C-5 has been one of the largest aircraft in the world. It’s the United State’s primary aircraft for moving large amounts of cargo to global theaters around the world. With an overall length of 247 feet 10 inches, the C-5 is 17 feet longer than the C-17. It’s powered by four General Electric engines that create 51,250 pounds per engine. Compare that to the C-17’s 4 engines that create 40,440 pounds of thrust each.

The C-5M Super Galaxy has a speed of 518 MPH and has a service ceiling of 41,000 ft. The behemoth aircraft has a minimal aircrew requirement of four but a typical crew consists of seven; a pilot, co-pilot, two flight engineers, and three loadmasters. Its load capability is hefty, carrying as many as 73 passengers while still transporting two Abrams tanks. Or it can carry those troops along with one Abrams tank and two Bradley fighting vehicles. Without refueling, the C-5 has a range capability of 5,524 miles while carrying 120,000 lbs of cargo.

An-124 Ruslan
If you are looking for another aircraft that is similar in size to the C-5 Galaxy then Russia’s Antonov An-124 Ruslan is your best bet. The Ruslan was introduced in 1986 and has an aircrew capacity of seven, the pilot, co-pilot, two flight engineers, a navigator, a communications officer, and a loadmaster. Its overall length is 226 feet and is 68 feet high. Powered by four large turbofan engines, the An-124 has a cruising speed of 497 miles per hour and a service ceiling of 38,000 feet. While carrying 80,000 lbs of cargo, it has a range of 13,694 miles. The Ruslan has a maximum takeoff weight of 800,000 lbs of cargo. Compare that to the C-5s 769,000 lbs maximum takeoff weight.

Interesting background, thanks. What do you think about starting a thread for interesting military experiences? I haven't served so I don't feel like it would be my place to start a thread like that but I would definitely be interested to read it. Also, the planes at Boeing field, while similar in appearance, I think they're much smaller than the C-5s or C-17s and only have two engines. They are Air Force and are similar dark gray.

Since we’re talking airplanes… I don’t know much about them in general. But when I was 19 I spent the summer in Alaska at a lodge/air strip. I spent a lot of time loading/unloading/fueling a small fleet of 12 planes. And every Thursday this plane (c-46???) would bring by 1,000 gallons of av-gas that we would pump into a transfer truck. We ran everything off of it, quads, pickups… The c-46 would buzz the gravel runway at full speed very low to warn everyone he was coming. We would stand at the end of the runway, it felt like you could almost reach up and touch it when it roared by.

That picture reminded me of when we were coming back from picking up the snow plow the other day. There was a trailer just a little bigger than that sitting along the road. It had a big rock on it and when it hit a rough bridge approach it flattened that trailer like a pancake. Both wheels were all cockeyed and the center of the trailer was on the ground.... I had to chuckle, poor guy had a problem.

Some people never passed Trailer Theory 101. I see them left on the side of the road and worse, driving down the road!

My truck was at the other end of the trail . First time I’ve been able to get onto the property to get wood I cut but wasn’t able to get last year where the equestrian arena was built had to wait for the owner to put a culvert pipe and gravel to cross the stream . That’s the left over used for a blind .

Left over culvert pipe . Owner of the horse farm put several sections in to divert water away from his polo field he’s building . So these were already in the woods . Put in some plexiglass windows from old golf cart windshields that open . So good 360 degree viewing used a swivel desk chair to sit it . Made three of them I’ll get some more detailed pictures .

That sure is. I was driving home along a ridge a little after 5 and noticed how brilliant and colorful our leaves are right now. The sun getting lower cast brilliant light on it all. There were clouds like the ones in your picture moving in and I was thinking we would be getting a good sunset. My place sits low and I don't get a good view of the sunsets here, unfortunately, except the higher parts.

I was going to say something about putting things in true perspective but left it out. They can lift and put big tires on the modern trucks (which there are a lot of these days) to try to be as cool as the older ones gone big. Not saying newer trucks can't be real trucks, but just no comparison to the real thing in my book

I guess I'll add a random picture I took
