Sitting on the couch watching TV tonight and looked over and see these guys staring at me.
My mom made these probably around 30 years ago and gave them to my honey and I as a Christmas gift back then. She passed around 17 years ago. We have a bunch of neat stuff she made over the years. I’m surprised these guys have their noses and arms still hoho! |
Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
That's neat. They are in great shape. The homemade decorations are the best. We made them a lot when I was a kid. They are the ones that mean the most over time

Very cool that Boston's official Christmas tree is sent there every year in appreciation. I also saw that Massachusetts was a major donor of funds for reconstruction. For anyone interested, here is the Wikipedia link: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halifax_Explosion There are many interesting and tragic facts. Here are a couple that stood out to me - spoiler alert - The last victim was recovered in the summer of 1919 - two and a half years after the explosion. Two US ships at sea saw the debris cloud from the explosion and came to Halifax to help in the rescue and medical treatment efforts. The explosion expelled so much water that it exposed the bottom of the harbor. The water flowing into the void created a 60 ft tall wave. The wave was responsible for much of the destruction and wiped out the remainder of an Indian tribe which had a settlement in a nearby cove. The Halifax Relief Commission was in operation until 1976, providing care for victims and pensions for survivors. |

Random barn timber pictures I took. I took them to get help identifying the species. The sun was just right at the end of the day so not only a help for identification but kind of artistic looking

Depends on where the barn is located as to wood species . My barn is American Chestnut White oak and black locust . The locust is primarily at the ground contacts. I believe the slabs in the rafters to be either Chestnut or oak need to get them down . The neighbor said they were there when he was a kid and hes in his late 70s Two middle pics are upside down cant get them to flip |

I took these on an ATV riding trip. Coal mines in West Virginia. Apparently, they bored horizontally into the vein.

They sure are blueprint consistent. Was that all of them or how many in a row?
Hey Mark, after I came out of your barn, I loaded up some locust |
Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
Those honeycomb holes were everywhere.
Somone told me an auger brought the coal out and in some case's they had conveyors that brought it off the mountain. The roads are rough now, but, looked to have been well maintained at one time. I suspect there was a lot of truck traffic. |

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
sadly not much chance of saving this old 1800's barn but I might try some homemade shoring and restoration when I retire
dad and I lofted over two thousand bales in that barn only 35 years ago when we were feeding cattle out of it back then stored a couple of tractors and the hay trailer in there too mortise and tenon joints just sitting on limestone blocks, nothing in or fastened to the ground I remember as a little kid my dad cleaning out the tack room and found a box of old wet dynamite thankfully the local quarry made arrangements with him to demo it for us https://dl.dropbox.com/s/4h7aycxunpm...12738.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/f1ybmv51rqg...13141.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/hpn1r80mvp3...13970.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/vup5u4401sb...13551.jpg?dl=0 https://dl.dropbox.com/s/x8sdax2k8m6...13775.jpg?dl=0 |

I'm no longer ahead and always looking and listening. Seems I was running into the wood for the taking like you are all the time, but it's been a while. I mostly scavenge off the side of the road, fallen or dropped. Lots of competition there these days.
This house was along Main St in Mt. Airy where I live, the Martin place. I knew it sold and saw it being prepped for raising, unfortunately. So, on the day I saw all the dust ahead I knew what was up. I found it ironic there is this huge billowing dust cloud from a pre-75 house drifting through town when I have regs up the wazoo for lead dust control so stringent with ridiculously high fines per violation. I think it begins on disturbing any area of wall over 32 sq' (4' x 8'). Ah, whatever. |
Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
Old home tear downs are sad. Some see it as progress while ridding the town of just an eyesore. I see it as the removal of someone's many memories.
|
Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
That place is a memory of mine. Many changes since I first came here. a local builder bought it, put in a cul-de-sac, and stuck 4-5 smaller homes in. Lots are big in town. Most places have a barn. They took the barn on this place down a few years prior. They are just now building the last house, which sits right where the old one did. It would have been more tasteful, in my opinion, to have left the old place stand. It was bought for the value of the land, so renovate the place that has been fitting in all along and stick the newer places (where they are) down grade and back where they impact the street view less. I mean, the town is known for its picturesque Main St. He did a good job, but I would have left the old place.
No eyesore. Someone removed the doors, windows, and most of the siding. I would have dismantled the whole thing. That place just needed paint on the exterior. It wasn't bad. The places along Main St, especially up the hill (like this place), were built as summer homes. The town originated as a whistle stop for the B&O climbing Parrs Ridge, people came out of the city to the cooler fresher air. The whole street is lined with turn of the century homes. The ones going down the hill are mostly the same Sears Catalog house. I think this place was one as well, frame house with steep turned gable. The ones up the hill are mostly Victorian. The president of the B&O's daughter built a sanitorium for children out of Baltimore along the ridge. I guess the town might not be here if there had been air conditioning  |

kinda weird, all these go up in flames during a flood....
but living in a flood plain, you can't get flood insurance....but pretty much everybody has fire insurance..... Attachment 2154892 Attachment 2154893Attachment 2154895 Attachment 2154894 |
Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
WOW!! The flooded truck left to sit a week was enough. Then the not so small fire?? Jeezy Peezy, that's some real carnage right there! It's like a boat sitting out on the water burning till it sinks. Only this would the whole marina. That sky view really sends it home. Shewee!
And a Hummingbird in the snow?? Certainly never seen that! They are long gone from here long before the first frost |
