Re: GM Semis
As much as I like the Toro Flow, it did not have the best record. Most owners had complaints about them, right down to some saying they should never have been converted from the gas engine. Same with my '67. As nice as the truck was, by the time I got it, it was long gone. I sure didn't mind the 6V-53 that replaced it though.

Re: GM Semis
You could make a pretty good case that GMC intended the V-6 to be either gas or diesel almost from the beginning. From what I understand, the V-6 family was intended to replace all the GMC built straight 6 gasoline engines along with the Pontiac and Oldsmobile V-8's that GMC was using the late 50's. Concurrently there was another program to develop a 4 cycle mid-range diesel engine, and at some point it merged into the V-6 program. The result was the Toro-Flow. Very true the Toro-Flow had problems (particularly the early versions) but so did most of the other big bore, short stroke mid-range diesels of the era, like the Cummins V-6 and '555' V-8. We could have a pretty good discussion about what was wrong (and right!) with the Toro-Flow. I may have mentioned in the past that I volunteer at a railroad museum, and we have a functioning D478 Toro-Flow in a bus. I'll post more about my experiences and what I have learned over the years about these oddball diesels in the next few days.

Re: GM Semis
The thing that puzzles me about a Diesel in a '60 or newer GMC Conventional is their choice. The Detroit was the engine of choice in a GMC. Yet, the only way to get a Detroit in these trucks was to buy a Chevrolet (offered later on in the years of the '60-'66 trucks) In my opinion, they should have offered a 4-Cylinder Detroit in them from the beginning.
When I was driving my '62 6500 with the 478 Gas, there was a Chevy C-50 or C-60 in our same neighborhood at the same time. It was about a '65. It made me feel I had the lesser of the two, lol. |

I'm not sure the exact year on this one. Mid '20s I think. Maybe first year

Re: GM Semis
Yes, the 4-53 was available in Chevy and GMC C series mediums from 1978 to about half-way through 1980, when it was replaced by the Detroit 8.2L. There was a lumberyard near me that had a few C-6500's with 4-53T's in them. Man they were noisy, sounded like they were going about twice as fast as they actually were.

An Astro 95 with a KT 450 Cummins. Wonder how many of those were built.

Isn't that orange dump gorgeous? Sure is sharp anyway
The Cummins KT is a well respected engine for sure. Sure seems odd to see an Astro run one. That Mayflower gas job is hard to imagine these days. Twin tanks on this side. I wonder about the other side. I wish I could see a picture of this Budweiser boat hauler |

Both of you guys have really gotten a great group of pictures together here. Better than great. I'm just not feeling creative . Great observations and knowledge, too, Bob. Did anyone else notice the trash can? (not impressed?)
Such variation in models. I have seen those pictures before and they really show how GM was REALLY building trucks. Such variation. The fat cabs were retained for some with both new front ends and old, and there was even the fleet model in the lighter trucks. I love that era or GMC Truck |

Re: GM Semis
Yes, 348 and 409 'High Torque' truck engines were painted silver grey and some of the truck small blocks were green. Nice assembly line shot of E and H models.
Like the truck 'mug shots', particularly the rare 'fleet option' light duties. |
Re: GM Semis
Five-Ten Budds on the Green GMC. Could be a 5500. I like the Yellow 9500. I believe I see a Diesel Emblem on the side of the hood. Most likely a 6-71. Trucks are either a '66 or '67.

Re: GM Semis
I believe my '62 6500 had an Eaton 2-Speed. I can remember "Eaton" on the button. As much as I'm not a fan of 2-Speeds, that is one tough rear. I would split shift a lot and one day I was hauling a heavy load of bricks up a steep hill. I shifted the rear into low range and for the first and only time ever, it mis-shifted. The whole truck shook a continuous violent bang-bang-bang until I stopped. I was expecting the rear to have chipped gears if not completely blown out. I shifted it a time or two standing still and took off again in low range. Turned out to be just fine. Worked perfectly from that day on.

Ran a C60 with 366 and 5 x 2 I thought the top 4 pattern was neat. It split 4L 5L to 4H 5H always pretended it was a 13spd |

Re: GM Semis
I also had the same combo in both my '62 6500 and my '67 7500. It was unique as the nice thing about it is you could go through 9 gears and only have to downshift the rear twice.

Nice looking Long Nose. If all original, looks like it's a '76.

Re: GM Semis
I recognize that 950 on the trailer. It was at an A.T.H.S. show in So. Cal. at the Orange Empire Railway Museum. It's all original and pretty solid too.

very nice 950, driving lamps, 5-holes, spot lamp, bunk, and all.
That long nose is gor-gee-ous. I can't quite recognize that teal color as original color in the mid-70s. That's an interesting cab on the '40-ish COE. Is it a bunk, I guess? And would that big bass drum looking thing tucked in there be the fuel tank? I could spend the rest of they commenting on each picture. Thanks for them all! Miller time |

Re: GM Semis
Not sure about the V-8 Toro-Flow, but in '66 and '67, the V-6 Toro-Flow got the old style Emblem like the earlier years had. My '67 7500 still had that type of Emblem still on it, even though it got converted to a 6V-53. I tried finding a V-8 Toro-Flow Emblem online, but the closest one I could find was a V-8 Magnum. Interesting though. Check out some of the different Emblems here at Jolly's site:
