man you have got some talent and alot of patients(i think i spelled that right) anyhow very nice, i tried veiwing the entire thread the other day but it took forever and i did not get to see the dash finished, keep up the good work and keep the pics comin.

One step at a time.

I got bored at work and the only thing I had there to work on in my spare time was the 4Runner. I decided to do a step by step on how to make a patch panel with only a few hand tools and a welder. It might help someone out.

First step find what you want to cut out.

I used an old tailgate for some scrap metal and laid it out. I over sized the pattern for trimming.

First set of bends was made with a vise and body hammer as well as the rest of the bends.

I made some relief cuts to make the compound curve. The original piece is behind it. I clamped it in place a little at a time to form the curves. Don't distort the original panel. You will end up with a bad patch.

I tacked the cuts to hold it's shape then removed the rusty piece and finished welding.

Ground the welds down and here is the patch.

Trimmed to fit and tacked in place. I did clean up the inner structure on the truck prior to install

It took me about 5.5 hours to do all of this. I rushed it just to see how fast I could do it. I got lucky a couple times, but it turned out pretty good for a rush. :lol:

Ronnie (198plus) is getting ready to bring his cab to me in a couple of days so I tried to find something I could knock out pretty quick on my truck, so I drug my hood out to work on it and it is worse than I remember from a year ago. The reinforcements on the front and rear are ate up with cancer.

The shell is in pretty good shape. Just a slight depressed area towards the back of the "V" rib.

I want to replace the front and rear reinforcements with some good ones that I have taken out of some other hoods. But first I need to build a crib of some sort to support the hood. Once I remove the reinforcements it will fold up like a pretzel. I'm trying to figure out the best and easiest way to support it. I'd like to build it out of wood. I'm thinking of using plywood and cut out ribs to match the profile of the hood and wrap with foam. The thing is I don't have any wood and by the time I go to the store it will be a wasted day.

I also need to get the reinforcements blasted. If I had a bigger compressor I could do it at home. But I don't. So here I sit trying to think of something else to work on. :haha: I've got a thinking problem. LOL

I am trying to find parts for my tilt today. Dang I know I hand them just the other day....well 6 months or so ago. I know if I buy new pieces, I'll find it the minute the order ships. :rolleyes:

Thanks Bill, I hope you have better luck than I have looking for mine.

After a little thinking time I thought why not use the old hood shell to support the hood that I'm working on. I figured both of them together would support each other. It seemed to work out pretty good.

I drilled the spot welds and busted them loose with a air hammer very carefully. Then use a block of wood and 3 pound hammer to knock it out of the folded over area.

I then took a wide screw driver and opened the flange up that I knocked it out of so I could slide the new one back in. I put the new one in temporarily so I could see how it was going to act. It worked out pretty well.

Then it was one to patching the sides of the hood. I used some old cowl extensions I had left over. They have the perfect contour for the hood.

One side I laid the piece I cut out of the hood for a pattern.

Then tacked it in. I had to be carefull not to weld the reinforcement in place with my tacks, since it will be coming back out later for blasting, prime and paint.

The other side of the hood I had to reverse the way I made the pattern. I cut the new piece larger then used it as a pattern then clamped in place and made my cut on the hood. This is where it is at now.

I will be removing the reinforcement and cleaning up my welds on the inside. Then I will paint the inside of the hood and the reinforcements then put the reinforcement back in. Yes when I weld it back in I will have some burnt areas from welding, but at least there will be some paint in the areas that can't be seen and impossible to get paint on. I will repair the burnt areas when I repaint the inside of the hood.

I'm still working on the hood some. I took vacation this week and didn't even go out in the shop Monday and Tuesday. I did go out today and helped Shannon on his cab. Made some progress on the hood, but nothing worth taking pics of. Check out Shannon's build for some good progress pics.

If you don't learn how to do it here you will definately learn what not to do. :lol: We learn from our mistakes and I make plenty of them.;)

I put the hood on hold. I'll finish the rest of the truck and hopefully they will repop them by the the time I'm done. :haha:

I took today and took my oldest daughter out in the shop for some father/daughter time. She said she wanted to build a car, toy car that is. She wanted to build a "mater". She hasn't had much hands on yet due to air tools etc. But she said she wants to paint it.

As I was making it, it dawned on me this would be a great exercise for those that want to learn how to work with metal, but are scared to cut on their truck. There are a lot of the same steps involved and will get you some experience working with metal. Anyway here's what we have done thus far.

Kudos to you Alan for spending some time with your daughter. This is something you both will remember for a long time to come. Make the time whenever you can 'cause before you know it they'll be all grown up and out of the house.
