Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
Bob, the A/C install looks great! I'm anal about the hose clamps too. Back when I used to do electical wiring on manufacturing equipment, I had to have all my wire ties facing the same way too. I would cut them off and put them on the same direction if they weren't the same. anal like that ;)

Thank Mike! Same here with the zip ties. I guess it's just a sickness!
Found the camera charger last night, so I got some better pics. The first pic is the fitting that I don't really like the looks of. I probably should have changed it now, but as long as it holds OK I'll run with it. |
Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
Well, I finally have a working A/C! :metal: Chris came and picked it this morning and took it to his work. Found a small leak at first, turned out to be the low psi switch on the accumulator, but it just needed to be snugged up a bit more. After that it passed the suction test and took the charge just fine. I just took it to lunch, and with my thermometer in the dash vent it read 43°. Considering that the ambient temp right now is 55°, that's pretty awesome!
Thanks a ton Chris!! :metal: |
Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
bob, I am also starting on the ac here in the nexd week or so,,, the only part I am a little lost is how does the ecm pu the idle speed when the ac is on?
I did my oem harness into a stand alone and I dont know if that matters? any input is appreciated,,, I am using the kwik perf kit |
Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
I did not connect mine to the PCM at all. I simply ran the OEM wire to the compressor. The green wire from the truck's harness to the green wire on the compressor, and the black to a ground. You can tell when the clutch engages, but it doesn't drag the idle down enough to really make a difference, ever when it's in gear. I was wondering how to to tie it in to the PCM myself, but after driving it at lunch with the AC on and hitting some lights, I'm not going to worry about it at this point.

hey Bob, what did you do to supply vaccum for the vent thingys to work.... did you just put a T on the booster vaccum source?
thanks in advaced,,, I know I said I was going to start a build thread to quit hackjacking this thread , i will have to start one soon.. since I am probably going to do the air suspension next,, and might need some help |
Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
OK, you got me..... what are vent thingys??? Do you mean all the vacuum modulators on the heating and air system?

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH, it just hit me! The vacuum line to the engine! :banghead: LOL! On the passenger side of the intake, toward the top and about center, there is a vacuum port there. It doesn't look like it at first because it has a plastic "bar" running across it to block it off. You need to cut or break that bar off to open the port up.
You can see it in this pic, I wish I could draw an arrow on it, but can't on this laptop. http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z...P1010183-1.jpg |
Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
Here you go. The rain let up and the dog needed to pee, so I went to the shop and pulled the cover off and got a cell phone pic while the dog did his business. You can kind of see the vacuum hose run under the wire harness then go up to the tee at the firewall.

thanks Bob,,, I am just waiting on the Kwikperf. bracket to get here...

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
Bob,
Sorry I missed your reply :dohh: I am tearing apart my 72' C10 for paint, updating my interior, adding a transcooler, well you get the idea a TON of stuff. I just thought if you were in the area it would cool to have you check out the garage... I understand if you need to get back home though. :metal: Now back to your build, I will quit mucking it up! |
Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
BOB!!!! I <3 FRED! =D :metal:
|
Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
I was also wandering about that vacuum thingy! I thought those were extra vacuum ports but I just wanted to ask Bob, he knows everything! :metal: Congrats on the A/C buddy, you know I will be asking a lot of questions once I get to that point!

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
No problem, ask away!
Fred thought he was a 4x4 yesterday. I had to drive him for a couple of reasons. But he lost the fight against the rain that could float Noah's Ark, and the stretch of our road that has no gravel. I got stuck DEEP on the way out yesterday morning. Luck for me, the neighbor was right behind me and went back and got his truck and pulled me out. It took about an 1/8 of a mile before he was able to suck Fred out of the ditch (all the while carving a foot deep trench!) :whine: I was able to get out using the less traveled back road. Then on the way home I took the same back road, and it took 7 freaking tries to get up a little hill that was covered in about 8" of greasy goose sh!t. I finally got a run at it, shot Fred off into the pasture, and made it up. It's gonna take a good 3 hours to get all the mud cleaned out of the underside. It's caked on THICK!! :haha: |
Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
Dang Bob that sucks, at least you made it home. You will probably have to chisel that stuff out!

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
Time for a posi ;). That's why I put them in all my ole' 2wd's. Might seem dumb, but Al. clay is slick as snot too.
|
Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
Oh man it's THICK!! I'll probably have to put a 45° bend in my pressure washer wand and put the truck up on my tallest jack stand just to get most of it!
|
Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
LOL, I'm not sure even a posi would have even helped. This is 100 year old wheat farm land. The top soil is like flour, then imagine adding several inches of water. I've had my 70 K10 stuck in this crap before too!
|
Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info
I guess that would be pretty bad, but you probably could have made the hill a lot easier at least. We are suppose to be getting that storm here tomorrow...there sayin' it's going to be a doozy.
