Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
My 55.5 got an electric wiper motor transplant today along with mounting the cab to frame bars in the engine bay. Also got a better e-brake lever installed and put my replacement chrome wiper mounts on the outside of the truck. Last thin I did tonight was getting one of the cab vent cables worked loose.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
I drove mine to the exhaust shop on Friday afternoon for a full exhaust set up and an inspection. So I've been sitting all weekend anxiously awaiting its return. I won't be getting it home until Wednesday at least so I should learn a little more patience. But it sure is amazing what you can get done around the house and yard when you haven't got a truck to work on

I finally got a couple of things done that I have been putting off. My Vintage Air dealer thought I needed to mount my condenser closer to my radiator so I got that done by re-positioning the condenser and removing the spacer I had between the radiator and the radiator support so that it moved the radiator closer to the condenser. I also installed a new fan clutch and a shroud which I hope will cure my over heating problem when I'm in traffic with the a/c going.
I also added a windshield visor. I tried to spray it dry to cut the gloss, and even lightly scuffed it with a 3M pad to reduce the gloss and help match it but there's still a difference, although the pic seems to exaggerate the difference. I need to drop the front end some but that's this winter's project. |

Nick,
Outstanding clean up! 000 or 0000 steel wool? Did you paint the letters using the "tape over & cut out letters out with razor blade" method? |

I have the exact same plastic shroud on my '55. When I had it installed one of the old guys that worked on my truck told me the fan blades should only go INTO the shroud 1/3 to 1/2 their width other wise the fan would not be very efficient at cooling. From your photo it's hard to see but it looks like it might be "in" too far. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Dropped the 59' off at the fabricator to get it started. Will start a build thread.

FYI: Be sure to get the fan clutch that is correct for your water pump. Some water pumps have a 3/4 inch shaft and some like mine have a 5/8 inch shaft. |

Actually first I (lightly) used a steel wire brush. Then I went to a #2 steel wool. Honestly it's a miracle I didn't scratch the surface. (enough to see it at least) Others have done the "paint everything, then wipe off the paint where you don't want it." So I thought I'd give it a shot. I taped off the caps right up to the edges of the letters. Then I tried to barely wet the towel and go over everything, but the surface isn't perfectly flat, and I hit the letters, so I repainted it, and spent 20 min with a bunch of cue tips removing the paint. I was already planning on getting a new set of these caps, and these were already beat to hell, so I figured I thought I'd just give it a shot. Quote:

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
I just got back from the swap meet in Springfield MO where I purchased the thrift master emblems, a cigaret lighter, and a license plate from 1947 with paperwork making it so I don't ever have to have my truck inspected once the plate is registered to it.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
In Missouri the plates first have to be approved for resuage by the state. They then give the guy who refurbishes the plates this paperwork you fill out just like a personalized license plate only after you fill it out and send it in they approve of it. This can take weeks or even months. You really just have to get lucky and find a guy who sells the plates made in that year for a start. The problem is not many people actualy sell plates like that. Sure you can buy the old plates but they rarely have paperwork with them. I'm not even sure where I would go to get the paperwork. You have to be able to prove a lot of different stuff. If you get something wrong you can go to jail so you have to be carful. I'm going to hold off for a while on doing the whole process so I know for sure I have all my stuff in order for it. The plate must match the year of your vehicle and in my case it must be marked as a truck plate. I'm not sure how it worked in MO 100% let alone in other states. You are limited to 1000 miles for personal use the rest must be for show and educational purposes so you can't use your truck as a daily driver. Also I am fairly certain that the truck must be garage kept.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Oh alright,
In ILL, I manged to get class B truck 1952 plate for $25 (no paperwork). And we have some plates called "extended antiques" which means from March till October, you can drive it just like a normal vehicle (and put as many miles on it as you like), but from November till march they must be driven for either "maintenance or show purposes." Ha ha I'm kidding Also with these plates, as long as you have them in the vehicle, glove box is what most people do. You can use the Year of Manufaturer plates as normal plates. |
Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
I imagine if you talk to the DMV you can get the same type of deal as I have but yours sounds a little better. The difference is as long as the truck is mine I can use the manufacture plate without ever having the thing inspected. It's a cool deal but has its drawbacks. I will probably get another truck with modern registration to make up for it.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Just moved the truck next to the 1940 Pontiac. Maybe now I can get the tranny out because the tires are not sunk into the ground. I need a concrete slab really badly.

Ah, '47 truck, I was thinking it had an in-cab tank as stock. One only wonders what prior owners were thinking sometimes, right?

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
They did a real hack job on the reinforcement in the left corner where they brought the neck out. Have to fix that yet.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
I just got done looking at my transmission. I would never have thought those pre sm420 transmissions would have been so heavy. The gears have chips in them so I am going to have it looked at so I know it's safe to use. I defiantly want to clean it out because I'm sure the mettal chips are at the bottom.

Nothing on the GMC. I have been doing a 2X4to 4X4 conversion on a 1990 dodge. I have most of the parts gathered up now and am doing some fabricating. pretty simple stuff. just front spring hangers and a cross member for front motor mounts.
