Not a dumb question at all. My HVAC guy said, "You need to insulate under the room, you will thank me later." I never really thought about it, but it made sense. It wasn't that expensive and it should help with sound deadening when inside the room too. I am going to install U-panel underneath. Should look good when finished. Thanks again! |
Re: Our new shop - AKA Barnasaurus
Congrats on the new grandbaby. It is the most awesome feeling when they start calling you grandpaw, or what ever it is they want to call you. I have 3, 2 boys and a 2 yr old. the boys call me grandpa, but for whatever reason, Peighton calls me PeePaw... lol its awesome !!!
Oh ya, the building is looking good too. I was in Tioga this weekend, wish I would have had your number. |

[QUOTE=Daddy'O;7053036]Thanks! My son and daughter in-law have asked us what we would like to be called. We said what ever they decide is good with us but my wife did say please don't call her Granny
My mom refused to be called grandma, so she picked her own name out.. "Mimi" |

Re: Our new shop - AKA Barnasaurus
congrats on the grandbaby :D:D:D
my first came on dec 20th, that's all i needed for xmas :D if your shop was up here i'd make a room under that mezzanine to keep it heated i have a 20x30 room in my 50x50 barn that has all of my wood working tools and work benches it's nice to have a heated shop to go to; with your texas location i'd have the same room with ac going all the time :D it's probably equally hard and costly to bring a -15*f room up to temp as it is a 110*f room down to temp |
Re: Our new shop - AKA Barnasaurus
Congrats to you too Grand-Ogre! :sexy:
The bathroom/break area and the upstairs room will be climate controlled throughout the year. My HVAC guy strongly suggested insulating the floor of the room over the mezzanine for better temperature control, something I really hadn’t given much thought to. It was inexpensive so I did the whole floor. The sound deadening quality is definitely an added bonus. :metal: Our temperatures here in North Texas can fluctuate big time. The winters are mostly very mild but occasionally we get below 40 degree weather for short durations with lows actually in the high teens not being uncommon. The problem we have is with the wind making it feel colder than it really is. Sustained winds at 20 mph with gusts up to 35 (and higher) are not uncommon. Thankfully these weather conditions are normally short lived which is another problem – no one can acclimate to the cold. Summer is by far the longest season for us as it seems we only have a hint of spring, fall, and winter. I’m weird. I like it hot, always have. If I can have some shade and a breeze I’m good. The shop with its 16 foot eves and spray on insulation provides the shade, a strategically placed shop fan provides the breeze. ;) The area under the mezzanine is 20x24. I should be able to move a vehicle under it with wheel dollies. It will also serve as an area for other projects similar to your 20x30 area. I’m going to design a quick way to hang canvas tarps around the perimeter of the mezzanine to temporarily partition off the area from the shop. Then I will be able to open the bath/break area for AC and heat if necessary. I agree, bringing a room from -15 degrees or 110 degrees to a comfortable temperature is tuff and expensive. |

This weekend was a good example of our weather. Saturday's high was 65. Sunday's high was 45 (that was in the early morning). By Sunday afternoon it was in the mid 30's and raining. We woke up Monday morning to 22 degrees and northeast winds around 15 mph. By Monday afternoon we had an inch of sleet. We kept warm in the house with the old Ashley wood burner. I did some ethernet cable routing and made up some rj45 ends in the shop which stayed around 40 degrees (the spray on insulation works!). The break room was a good 60 degrees with my milk house heater running. Can't wait for summer. :waah:

I've got property 3 blocks from the ICW in Port O'Connor Texas - Not Mexico, but closer and a lot warmer. We just need to build a shop on 14 foot stilts....:sexy:

Re: Our new shop - AKA Barnasaurus
Daddy'o, that is a great looking property you have there! Really nice! Will your entire shop be heated or cooled?
Watched the weather channel yesterday and saw all the sleet hitting Dallas...this has become a rough winter and was 15 below here last night. |
Re: Our new shop - AKA Barnasaurus

I hope to get the shop area heated in a couple of years with an overhead propane heater, probably won't try to cool it though as I don't think I can afford the cost to do it efficiently.:waah: |

I saw where your area got all that ice. There's not much worse than that. Tree damage, power outages, impossible to walk or drive on. Ice is horrible to experience. Hope you got through it without too much trouble. |
Re: Our new shop - AKA Barnasaurus
I was lucky during the ice storm ,we did lose power but I was home to keep the generator going and wood on the fire .My co workers had that shift at work and had no power and 1200 university students to contend with ,now its my turn at the campus til this one goes by .If it is just snow we will be alright but they are predicting freezing rain just ahead of heavy snow .Im afraid we are screwed on this one .

Well.... round two - 02/27/2015 - 5 inches of snow. The HVAC crew was here before the storm hit and got the outside unit set and most of the inside unit setup. They decided to call it quits before it got worse.....good call because it did. Normally takes me 30 to 35 minutes to get home from work.....it took over an hour. Insert eye roll here.
Here are some pics. There is one for Ogre too....:sexy: Hope everyone is staying warm! |
Re: Our new shop - AKA Barnasaurus
We got 6 or 8 inches of that crap ,Ive had enough .It just wont go away ,Im ready for spring.

Thanks everyone for the compliments. Ogre – I hear you – Come on global warming.
I was able to strike off a few items on my long “to do” list during the last couple of weeks. A major one was the HVAC….it’s nice to finally have heat and humidity control in the break/bath areas. I mounted a first aid kit and some smoke alarms. Remember – Safety First. |
