Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Put the seats back in and my buddy buckets I bought with some temporary covers :)
I cleaned/prepped/painted the buddy frame semi gloss. Still need to finish the middle seat box https://scontent-dfw1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...3f&oe=5677EDF4 https://scontent-dfw1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...f2&oe=567F2A7C |

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Got the brake lines all plumbed with a Stainless steel kit from The Right Stuff Detailing, its not "direct fit" but I got it all to work. My advice for anyone else is to get a tubing bender, line, flaring tool and plumb it how you want. That is the way you will get the cleanest install and probably the least headache as well. Need a disc/disc prop valve and master cylinder now

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
I just went through your build thread. Oh, and the back story too. Great buy back in 2008! Anyway have enjoyed the progress you documented, the renderings look great, and will be tagging along for the rest.

Im sure a lot of people can relate to life stuff.... Happy to be in a place where I can give it the attention it deserves and its the one I held onto! I regret selling all my others... 56 big window stepside, 64 Impala SS, 68 SWB 4x4 74 GMC Jimmy... :( |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Got the "pre bent" kit from the Right stuff all hooked up and my prop valve, vette master cylinder and finally have all the brake lines hooked up. Still need to run a bracket for the prop valve now and do a little more bending to run everything a little cleaner and button it up.
https://scontent-dfw1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...92&oe=5668F45B Of course a 14 bolt FF pops up 5 minutes from my house on craigslist right when I get a bunch of unexpected bills its even from a K30 so I wouldn't need to move the spring perches :waah: |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Those lines look really good. Isn't that the way things go...something needed for a project is close by and something else gets in the way...
|
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Those lines look great! Of course the proportioning valve is going leak badly with that last port still open.. ;)

Also does anyone know where to order the prop valve bracket? |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Took the hubs off my dana 60 after finally getting the right spindle nut socket.
Progress is slow at the moment. I think I might spend some time detailing the engine bay, etc while I save funds for the next steps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-yTvQLBJ5I |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Nice job on the video! Anyone needing to do this job could follow along easily. And they will know what socket will work....
I've never worked on anything with a wedge under the caliper. Interesting. |

Yea the 1 ton axle had me stumped pretty good, trust me there was a lot of edits of NOT knowing what I was doing haha. My job is making content basically (I run a website/online store for training information) so I feel it makes sense to do it with my hobby as well and have found Youtube tutorials to work great... The only way you get better at something is by doing it I've found so I'll keep making some as I get further into this project. |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Do you have any pics you can post of the brackets for the buddy buckets center section to keep it upright not fall in back seat.
I have gold and white Buddys and would love to put them in my 68 4X4 burb... Thanks in advance! |

I actually need to make a bracket like you do as well. If you find more info please share Progress on my burb has been put to a halt, shorter days, more work, more bills.. You all know how it goes I'll get back on it though |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Wire wheeled and rattle canned the Dana 60 and some parts
https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0...6b&oe=57E84FC3 I might try to get a dana 44 3:73 front end with 6 lugs for the time being just to get the suburban on the road and save the Dana 60 and going 1 ton for a later date. At this point I just want to drive it |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Upate:
Picked up a Dana 44 with 3:73s to match the back axle for $100 https://scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net...fc&oe=580D7743 Sold my Dually Dana 60 for 1k Picked up some 4x4 Rally's with good 32" BFG's for $200 its been productive week! https://scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net...21&oe=57EE4CD0 https://scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net...66&oe=57F9FA6E Now to clean, paint, put new brakes, Ubolts, etc on the axle and bolt it up. |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
A video moving the new Dana 44 the hard way from the other day... Worked out pretty good actually

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Watching this makes me feel more fat & outta shape
Axles are tough to move around by oneself, since they have spinning grab points. What's up with the hubs? No selectors? |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Quote:
Yea moving stuff like this its all about finding the right balance and leverage points. The axle didn't come with locking hubs but for $100 I can't complain |

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Got the Dana 44 in, brakes, steering, etc hooked up and the rally's mounted. Trying to get it towed to my new house now.
https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/l/t1...24&oe=58139A1C I'll get some more pictures up soon and will give it a good WASH when it gets to its new home! |
