Almost ready to drive! ;)
Looking good on the swap so far.:metal: |
Re: 1992 GMC Sierra K1500 Shortwide Z71 Conversion
Thank you Bill. Still need to straighten out my exhaust, then run all my lines. Hopefully, it will be on the road next week. Still not done with my engine. Next is to finish painting the front of the engine orange, then pull the valve covers and spray them black. Also have new rails to re-route my plug wires.
How's the '70 coming? |
Re: 1992 GMC Sierra K1500 Shortwide Z71 Conversion

Before the MAJOR update...
May 3, 2013. SNOW. The hell is this white crap doing here in May?! http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps513ef266.jpg Now for the good stuff ;) The beast lives. Got it all back together tonight. Still got some work, but it's together and it runs. Here's a little height comparison with dad's  http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...psbaa72456.jpg It's a good bit taller than what I figured it would be. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps1347c080.jpg Also has one hell of a rake. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps4717b8f6.jpg |

Re: 1992 GMC Sierra K1500 Shortwide Z71 Conversion
Hey Dub. Great build, I also enjoyed your burb to crew build. I'm sure that you know but the Z71 package is nothing more than shocks, steel skid plates and a sticker. I've talked to quite a few people and did a bunch os resource about this, because I have a Z71 thats my parts truck. Some people say they have a locking diff and higher suspension but I talked to a guy from our Chevy garage here and he said that they are all just different options that can be ordered. Suspension package, locker package and tow package are all different from the Z71 package. I'm not sure if I'm wrong on this, that's just the info that everyones been giving me. I was just wondering because you kept refering to the frame as a Z71 and didn't know if you was doing that strictly out of reference or not? If I'm wrong and you know different please let me know so I can take advantage of the parts before I scrap the Z71 parts truck that I have. Thanks. Keep up the good work.
P.S. Hows the burb to crew build going? You still working on it? And I like your bumper sticker. I live on an Indian reservation in NE Montana. |
Re: 1992 GMC Sierra K1500 Shortwide Z71 Conversion
You're mostly right about the Z71. It's just Bilstein shocks, skid plates, and the sticker. Some Z71 models did have a 3:42 rear end, but not all. Also, some 88-98 Z71 models have heaver springs [at least this is what I've heard], and something I know, because of how my dad's 2000 is, is that '99-up Z71 models have a lighter spring package. Thanks for the positive feedback though; it's not done either even though it's back together. I have a 3" suspension lift to install in the front, then a lot of other things to get it road legal. Thanks for the feedback on the bumper sticker . It was my replacement bumper, and I didn't feel like taking it off, because it's pretty much true. As for the crew, we're still working on it. It's just on hold until mine is finished and on the road.

Re: 1992 GMC Sierra K1500 Shortwide Z71 Conversion
After seven long months, not having what I needed to get this damn thing running right, a lot of trial and error and it just being moved around the past several months...UPDATES, UPDATES, UPDATES!!
Firstly, just a few goodies that I acquired. Bug shield, took forever to find one of these things. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...68982532_o.jpg Older style (At least that's what I think) glove box door with the ribbed inside panel. https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...44879864_o.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...08249894_o.jpg Also, finally got one of those handy under-dash cup holders. Usefil little things. ;) https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...29274807_o.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...41214923_o.jpg |
Re: 1992 GMC Sierra K1500 Shortwide Z71 Conversion
Sorry for the overly enlarged images. Anyway, next .
Dash that's going in to replace the completely cracked and destroyed dash that's already in my truck. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps2865f8e3.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps17fccf51.jpg Got me a fancy newer JVC head unit, to replace my Sony Xplod. Not the greatest or top-model, but I like it. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps8ce6b010.jpg New bushing and sleeve kit for my 3" Skyjacker, that I still have yet to put on. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps0b1c55b8.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps94ba802b.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...psb7279787.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...psef5ef2da.jpg |
Re: 1992 GMC Sierra K1500 Shortwide Z71 Conversion
And now, what I'm working on to get this thing running the correct, and proper way, to completely fix my wiring issues. Completely gutted another parts truck, '90 4x4 Silverado, and going to use the complete harness out of that, which means the old half-moon gauge cluster. But I can live with that.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...psfdd8ade8.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps35ef7d3f.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...psfc3a1dda.jpg Got that complete harness out, and started wworking on pulling mine out. Was planning on having it done by this weekend, but work and extremely cold weather are getting in my way. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...psf6428f48.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...psdf102055.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...psabb02720.jpg Should be running and back on the road soon. Of course I said that seven months ago. |

Re: 1992 GMC Sierra K1500 Shortwide Z71 Conversion
It's been a good minute since I've posted an update or for that matter even posted on the forums. Anyway, end of February 2014, I got her back together for the most part. Got it running, after a complete 1990 wiring harness swap, inside and out. However, sad to say she's down and out again. Everything works except a few bugs. I'm having severe charging problems, and power problems. Not getting out of its own way. Plan on fixing that when I have time, but working all day everyday is a bit of an issue.
Anyway, thought I'd go ahead and put this out here. When I get back into tearing into the beast and figuring things out, I'll definitely post some major updates. |
Re: 1992 GMC Sierra K1500 Shortwide Z71 Conversion
Sorry to hear about the issues. Be looking forward to seeing more updates.

Re: 1992 GMC Sierra K1500 Shortwide Z71 Conversion
Why run the old moonie gauges? Took me about 2 hours to install a 1992 cluster in my 1989. :)
Otherwise, great work! |
