Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thanks Kim and Jim!!
Is there someone who is willing to help me out with wheel studs? I've got a 1 Moroso part #, and two NAPA part numbers I can use. Shippingcosts to the Netherlands is way above I expected :( I did get much more from the states, but this is above normal for 10 bolts  Is there somebody who is willing to check for me what the real costs are?? If you are willing to, please send me a PM? Thanks in advance!! |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Work looks great Kees!
PM sent. |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thanks!!!
PM sent back to you ;) |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Wheel bolts has solved itself ;)
I want to thank Advanced Design for his very quick replay and willing to help me out. At the end it wasn't neccesary..... I sent A.D. to work and finally did nothing with all his work :hh: So BIG thanks to Advanced Design!!!! |

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Did some small work on the lathe.
The new x-members are ready to the the diff, so now the diff must be mounted again for the fabrication of the torque arms and radius rods. Have to think about how I going to make that. Sure I have my ideas ;) On the lathe I turned some long nuts, so that they fit into the pipes of which I make the rods. I do this to make the rods adjustable. This is what I stated with: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-W...o/P1490925.JPG This is what it became: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-W...o/P1490927.JPG I think you see what the intention is. Probably have to make an extra x-member to mount the radius rods... |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Love home fabricated pieces! Looks good.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Nice.
I'd love to have a lathe. Kim |

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thanks guys!!
Made some progress on the IRS. Welded the open ends of the x-member to the framerails, made gussets to the "diff hanger" and welded it all. That's ready! https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-V...o/P1260043.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-T...o/P1260044.JPG All open ends closed like this: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-G...o/P1260045.JPG "Diff hanger" also ready: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-R...o/P1260047.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-e...o/P1260049.JPG Hanged the diff in it's place and made the front and rear tie bar. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8...o/P1260051.JPG Tie bars from 1/4" steel plate: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-X...o/P1260053.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--...o/P1260054.JPG Front tie bar, this has to take the torque bars at the sides. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-3...o/P1260056.JPG Rear tie bar, ready. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-q...o/P1260059.JPG An overview, just because I like it ;) https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-a...o/P1260060.JPG Next on the list is to make the Torque bars and the Radius rods. The last ones need an extra x-member at about 3 foot in front of the IRS. We'll see how that's gonna work out, unfortunately there is also a driveshaft in front of that same IRS :lol: |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Nice work, looks rock solid!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Entire rear set-up looks great, nice finish work on caps, braces, etc...Jim

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Damn Kees, thats some mighty fine construction work man!
when the frame is all welded up, will you be powder coating it, or just paint? |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
That looks really nice and stout.
Kim |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Excellent work and finish detail Kees! Love it!
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thanks for the compliments guys!!!
Steve, no powdercoat, just paint, low budget build you know ;) After some braintraining this evening, I came up with an extra x-member to mount the Radius rods to. This will be bolted to the framerails about 3 foot before the IRS. I took what I had left of a 10 ltr scuba dive tank (the rest became an oiltank for my Harley project ;) ) grinded it through the middle. That piece fits right under the driveshaft. I welded it between two 2x3", put on some gussets and we have a new x-member! :metal: My welding jig: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-7...o/P1260061.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y...o/P1260062.JPG Tacked it and looked if it fits... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-f...o/P1260063.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-J...o/P1260064.JPG Fits like a glove!! Next welded on the gussets, unfortunately I ran out of steel strip so I couldn't it finish it today. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-5...o/P1260065.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-8...o/P1260066.JPG I also put on the shocks to look at the angle. This must be the rideheight, if it is on the ground. The half shafts should be almost level then. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-b...o/P1260067.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7...o/P1260068.JPG |

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thanks again guys!
Had a little done today. Finished the extra x-member https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-y...o/P1260069.JPG Bolted the member in place and made the radius rods. I grinded the eye off an old shock, took two big nuts and a piece of thread and welded an adjustable new eye ;) https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y...o/P1260070.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-b...o/P1260072.JPG I then made some new ears for the rods out of 2x3" and tack welded these in place https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-n...o/P1260074.JPG I saved the original Jaguar rubber bushings that goes onto the lower control arms. I had two halfs of these reaction rods of which I took the rubber off. I did the same to these rod ends as with the shocks, so I have two rubber bushings. Welded the rods to the Jag bushings https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-m...o/P1260076.JPG Finished welding the eyes and the rods and mounted them in place. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-4...o/P1260077.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-q...o/P1260080.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-3...o/P1260081.JPG The eyes are at the same width as the pivots of the lower inner control arms. This way you get no binding of the half shafts. I tested it without the shocks mounted, and boy, that went great :lol: No heavy points, no binding, just up and down without some sort of force!! I'm a happy dude :sexy: Next on the program are the torque bars, so stay tuned!! |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Nice work Kees! Really like the creativity.
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thanks Doug!!
You must be a little creative when you're on low budget ;) |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
I now understand the dual shock on each side..that's a lot of extra steel you're adding :)
I was going back through the pages and wondered why the overflow bottle has 2 hose connections? (I'm considering steeling that idea) and does the capacity of the overflow bottle have to be a specific measure compared to the complete amount of cooling fluid in the truck? |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
RockinKees, You have done a great job installing both suspensions. Reading your posts you have made it look logical and easy ( I'm sure it wasn't) and I wouldn't be afraid to do the same install following your lead. Your fab work is great. On to the next stage.
Earl |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thanks for your compliments Earl!!
Steve, I want it to be as heavy as a real Jag :lol: So there's gonna be much more steel :metal: The overflowbottle was a first try. Motor kept spitting fluid. It works great thou. I dont know if it has to be a specific measure, don't think so. It has two connections, one is from the radiator, that goes all the way to the bottom of the tank in the fluid, the second is the overflow for the overflow bottle, The Release  I don't know if I need that one either...but it works, no more fluid spitting out of the motor, it just goes in the bottle and back to the motor. I'm gonna make a new one out of stainless steel and a size bigger, this one is 1 ltr, going to about 2 ltr. |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thank you Kim and Mark!
A question for you guys: I have to modify my cabcorners to get the large propane tanks at the side of the framerails. I must loose quite a bit of it, but there's an inner cab corner behind. What for purpose had these inner cabcorners?? Are they structural needed or are they there only to catch dirt ;) I want to delete them and close it inside the cab. Is there anything else I should watchout for? After I have the torque bars done this is next on the list.... |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

I took out my inner cab corners and made these to go in the cab.
I think the original design is what led to the rot in that area. I just tacked them in and will use seam sealer to finish them off. I was afraid too much welding would warp the cab in that area. Kim |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thank you Kim.
That's what I needed to know. The inner cabcorners do collect a lot of dirt and that's sure is not what we want. I haven't looked real well, but I think I have more repairs in that airea... We shall see, thanks again!! |

Me too!
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Are they tacked from the inside of the cab or from the underside of the cab?
Looks factory new Chuckdriver! |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
I did mine on the inside. When it's all carpeted they wont be seen.
Kim |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Okay, from the inside it is, easier welding too ;)
Thanks Kim! Today I reached the first big milestone: IRS is ready :metal: I'll show you the last bits, first how I made the ears for the radius rods and torquebars, that's easy: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-r...o/P1260082.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-7...o/P1260083.JPG Pics speak for themselfs, I suppose? The torque bars are basicaly the same as the radius bars: First made the bars again from old shocks, big nuts and a piece of thread: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-5...o/P1260084.JPG Then I welded the new ears on the framerails and on the front tie bar: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-x...o/P1260085.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-B...o/P1260086.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-x...o/P1260087.JPG The torque bars are mounted at 45 degrees out and tilted up, to prevent that the diff rolls up or down by the force of accelerating or braking. This should work according to plan :burnout: Now I have to clean and paint the frame, take the axle apart for some new parts, paint it also and it's ready for its new home. I also did get a tow bar, but must wait for it until the break up that car.... Then on with the tow bar, in with the fueltank, and, and...... Next week I'm gonna try to get the propane tanks mounted and modify the cab corners. The tanks are gonna be mounted at the outside of the framerails, left and right. Let's see how that goes :smoke: |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
You're doing some great fab work.
Kim |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
I put mine on the bottom side. Screwed them in place first then removed one screw at a time and plug welded them in. Seem sealed all the edges and undercoated the bottom side, painted the top side and covered with Dynamat!
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Looks great Chuckdriver, Did you weld it from the top of the bottom?
Thanks Kim, I do my best! (Can't even stand in your shadow ;) ) |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
From the top!
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Today I had planned to get the propane tanks at the side of the framerails.
I had to modify more as planned... I knew I had to take a piece out of the cabcorner, this doesn't matter because you don't see it. After some measurements I came to the conclusion I also had to modify the step inside the cab. I'm glad I have a longbed, otherwise it didn't fit at all :( So I took my buddy The Grinder and take a piece out of the cabcorners and out of the steps... Cabcorner: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-u...o/IMG_2433.JPG Step: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-l...o/IMG_2434.JPG This is one of two propane tanks that going to be mounted next to the framerails: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-n...o/IMG_2435.JPG They measure 125 cm x 25 cm (49,2" x 9,8") I drilled the holes for the brackets to hold the tanks and test fitted them. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-h...o/IMG_2436.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-k...o/IMG_2437.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-j...o/IMG_2438.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-g...o/IMG_2439.JPG I must say, they fit pretty good, it's a shame I had to cut into the steps, but propane is so much cheaper to drive than petrol overhere. I really do not want anything in the bed if it isn't really neccesary. Sometimes you must sacrifice some.... The two mounted: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-B...o/IMG_2440.JPG With the bed on, you don't see the tanks, and that's what I wanted. You don't even see the modified steps with the doors closed :lol: I found the cabcorneres in pretty good shape, some small holes, the inner corners weren't so bad either. So I grinded the last 2 inch off of the inner cabcorners to open them up. The rest of it stays. There came a few kilos of rubbish out of it! The small holes will be repaired and undercoated, just like the rest of the entire underside. Now with this done, I can clean up the rear frame and put some paint on it. Then take care of the IRS, clean it up, new brakes on and paint it. All goes to plan  |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
You would probably never use the area you cut out of the step anyway!
